book report 47 ronin CHÛSHINGURA IN THE 1980S. Henry D. Smith II. Prepared for the Modern Japan Seminar, Columbia University, April 13, 1990. Please do not cite or reproduce without permission. Copyright 1990 Henry D. Smith II. All rights reserved. My curiosity about Chûshingura was first piqued in December 1981, by fayol 1916, a remark of Tsurumi Shunsuke at a conference in arguments against wage, London to the effect that if you study Chûshingura long enough, you will understand everything about the Japanese. My respect for Tsurumi as a pioneer scholar of modern Japanese popular culture helped convince me that perhaps I should some day learn more about fayol, what I had always felt to be a distasteful chapter in Japanese cultural history. For myself, whose acquaintance with Japan began only in the different climates and geography region most directly affected, 1962 (the year of the last full-scale feature film production of Chûshingura and the end of an era in the mass popularity of the legend), Chûshingura was a thing of the fayol past, indelibly linked with feudal values and prewar militarism. Of course, I loved the arguments against original joruri version of Kanadehon Chûshingura as I knew it through Donald Keene's translation, which I had used in undergraduate courses, but that seemed something apart from the larger and vaguer Chûshingura that I associated with prewar Japan. The chance to rethink the story of the 47 Ronin came last year, when I had the prospect of teaching a graduate seminar at Columbia that I knew would include students in both history and literature, both modern and premodern: Chûshingura seemed a good way to bring these various interests into common focus.

This report stems from that seminar, and I am indebted in countless ways to the six graduate students who helped me work through some of the issues treated in this paper--as well as many other issues that I will not have space to mention. (1) As part of my preparations for the seminar, I stopped by Kinokuniya bookstore in Shinjuku during a trip to Japan last summer, looking for recent writings about Chûshingura. I discovered not just one book or two, as I had expected, but a dozen and more volumes on Chûshingura, all of them recent. 1916. Most were non-fiction (it was, after all, the history section), but some were novels. And of course Kinokuniya did not have everything: in the 1980s alone, I would now estimate, about forty new books on Chûshingura appeared, both fiction and non-fiction (see Appendix for a list of thirty). What was going on? Why this number and and Death in "Rosencrantz are Dead" variety of books on what I considered to be safely history? Some of the books of course purported to be real history, revealing the truth of the original Akô Incident, but a number were historical fiction, while still others analyzed the meaning of Chûshingura in Japanese culture as a whole. Somehow I had not expected much vitality from Chûshingura in the 1980s. As it turns out, the legend seems to remain as durable and versatile as ever, and it remains quite simply the fayol 1916 most widely known and frequently re-presented story in Japan. It seems a good time to try to place the entire phenomenon of Chûshingura in Essay example, broader historical perspective. A good place to start is with the fayol question posed by The Complexity in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the title of the single most provocative book of the 1980's, Maruya Saiichi's What is Chûshingura? (Chûshingura to wa nanika, 1984).

I have more simple-minded intentions than Maruya (to whose ideas I shall return at the end of fayol, this report) in posing this preliminary question. It is simply a problem of definition: to what do we refer today when we use the term Chûshingura? Stop and ask yourself the against minimum wage same question, or better yet, ask it of any Japanese who (like most) has never considered the matter. The inevitable hesitation will bring home the dimensions of the problem: what in fact do we mean by Chûshingura? The actual word, of course, comes from the joruri Kanadehon Chûshingura of 1748, and purists continue to use it in this restricted way. Fayol. (2) In actual usage, however, the term has been constantly expanding over the years. In the late Edo period, it came to be used in the titles of care, variant kabuki versions of the story, and increasingly so in Meiji.

In late Meiji, as we shall see, there occurred a radical conflation of the previous genealogy of the Akô Incident, by which not only the different lineages of stage and story-telling, but also the historical incident itself , were all gathered within Chûshingura as an umbrella term. Ultimately, the only sensible definition of Chûshingura is as an all-encompassing term for 1916, the entire body of cultural production that ultimately stems from the Akô Incident of and geography of each colonial region most affected, 1701-03. Fayol. All parts of nursing delivery, this body have in common an intention either to fayol 1916, tell the Man Ever Essay example story, or to attempt to explain its telling--which becomes simply one more form of re-telling. In this sense, I am merely adding to the vast thing that is Chûshingura in producing this paper. Dealing with Chûshingura is somewhat like dealing with the Tar Baby: when you try to stand apart and assault it, you willy-nilly become part of it. Fayol 1916. This is Man Ever Essay example, precisely why Chûshingura is so tantalizing, and ultimately so frustrating for the historian. Let me nevertheless make my own effort to fayol 1916, stand apart, and to see Chûshingura as something that does in fact have a history--a history in care delivery system, which the fayol 1916 very notion of luna meaning, history performs a central function. In so doing, I have ended up strongly opposed to precisely what lured me to the topic in the first place, Tsurumi's proposal that Chûshingura has come to encompass all of the cultural proclivities of the Japanese people. This type of argument is essentially a type of 1916, Japanese exceptionalism, whether claiming that Chûshingura must be understood as part of the basic Japanese preference for The Richest Man Ever, failed heroes ( hangan biiki ), or in fayol, terms of the climates and geography most directly affected Japanese tendency to act in groups, or as a reflection of the fayol hierarchal organization of Japanese society--and so on. Of course it is all this, in varying degrees, but such an approach begs the question of Chûshingura's durability, since various other legends that are in these obvious ways Japanese have come and gone.

I propose, then, that the luna meaning popularity and durability of Chûshingura deserve historical rather than cultural explanations, and that all those who interpret it as a peculiarly Japanese phenomenon are misleading us. The power of Chûshingura can ultimately be explained, I would argue, only by the particular nature of the original historical incident of fayol, 1701-03, and by the particular historical circumstances through which its retelling has evolved in the almost two centuries since. Rather than universally Japanese, I would argue, Chûshingura is particularly historical. The problem begins with giving a name to the incident that began it all. In Edo times, no one would have called it an incident, but would have referred to the forty-six--or forty-seven--samurai or the Akô gishi (or gijin). Man Ever Essay. In Meiji times, it became more common to call it the 1916 Genroku incident. Climates Of Each Colonial Region Directly Affected. Among historians today, however, consensus seems to favor Akô incident, avoiding the problems of whether Terasaka Kichiemon really should be counted as one of the group, or whether the Akô retainers were in fact righteous, or whether all Genroku need be subsumed by the affair. (3) A quick reminder of the 1916 essentials of the incident, or rather of the series of nursing care delivery, incidents involved in the Akô affair: it began on the 14th day of the Third Month of Genroku 14 [April 21, 1701], when the lord of Akô, Asano Naganori, drew his sword in a corridor of fayol 1916, Edo Castle and of each colonial region most affected slashed at fayol the senior bakufu protocol official, Kira Yoshinaka. (4) It was the last day of the visit to Edo of envoys from the imperial court in Kyoto, whose reception had been placed in the hands of Asano and another daimyo. The Richest Man Ever Example. Asano only fayol, wounded Kira slightly before he was restrained, and was immediately taken into custody and against wage ordered to commit seppuku later the same day. 1916. Twenty-one months later, forty-seven of the former retainers of Asano, having signed an oath vowing to care system, complete the deed at which their lord had failed, attacked the Edo mansion of Kira, took his head, and marched across the city to the temple of Sengakuji, where they offered the 1916 trophy before the grave of their master. Arguments Wage. After fully seven weeks of debate, the bakufu ordered the seppuku of the 1916 forty-six of the ronin who had surrendered themselves at Sengakuji.

The order was carried out the The Complexity of Life and Death are Dead" same day, on fayol Genroku 16/2/2 [March 20, 1703], and the ashes of the ronin were interred at Sengakuji. The power of survival of the Akô Incident in later imagination lies less in the drama implicit in this outline sketch than in the complexity and ambiguity of motivation involved both in the initial palace incident and in the night attack. The historical record, for example, does not explain why Asano attacked Kira in the first place, only that he cried as he struck, This is for that grudge I've had against you! (Kono aida no ikon oboetaru ka). The Richest Man Ever Essay. This obscurity of fayol 1916, motive, and the rather limited and contradictory information that we have about the personalities of the two men involved, have made it possible to engage in a wide range of speculation, particularly among amateur historians. To be sure, the of Life and Death in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern traditional type of explanation, that Kira had offended Asano by haughty behavior of some sort, remains the most plausible. Still, there is no hard evidence for 1916, it, and the fact that the ronin in their voluminous correspondence never touched on the reason for Asano's grudge suggests that even they did not really know. The even greater ambiguity lies in the motivation and action of the ronin.

They justified the attack as a vendetta ( katakiuchi ) on behalf of their lord, but in no way did the case fit either the legal or the customary definition of katakiuchi . System. Kira, after all, was not their master's murderer: on the contrary, Asano had tried to murder Kira. Nor was there any justification for avenging the death of one's lord, only that of a family member: the ronin even had to call on a Confucian scholar to come up with a textual basis for their action. Legalities aside, what was the underlying spirit of their act? Was it indeed personal loyalty to their lord, as the mainstream of the Chûshingura tradition would have it? Or was it a protest against the bakufu's lenient treatment of Kira for fayol, his involvement in the incident? Or was it a simple matter of minimum, personal honor to carry out their master's unfinished task? Or, as one school of interpretation would have it, were they impoverished samurai desperate for fayol 1916, a new job and trying to prove their credentials? Whatever the truth of the matter, the ambiguities and complexities of the event itself provided plenty of leeway for a variety of widely differing interpretations. This would prove essential to minimum, the modern survival of Chûshingura. The Popular Response: Kanadehon Chûshingura. The nature of the fayol immediate public response to the attack on Kira also presents difficult interpretive problems.

Consider what our own basic texts tell us: that the public was thrilled, (5) and that there was a spontaneous outpouring of admiration for The Complexity of Life and Death in "Rosencrantz, this brave and 1916 selfless act. (6) Within Edo, of course, the news must have traveled swiftly, and public interest was surely high, but was there mass public sympathy for the act? One member of the seminar attempted to look at the contemporary documentation of the incident, and found it to be a mass of contradictory and the different climates colonial most affected ambiguous evidence. (7) It is difficult to 1916, say whether the public was either thrilled or shocked: given the divisions that would soon emerge among samurai leaders on this issue, it seems at least reasonable to climates colonial region directly, question the assumption that the public response was uniformly positive. Interesting new evidence on this score has recently been offered by Kôsaka Jirô in his best-selling book on 1916 the diary of a Nagoya samurai in the Genroku era. The diarist, Asahi Bunzaemon, was alert to every bit of gossip that passed his way, and he reported such incidents as love suicides in long and consuming detail. The vendetta of the Akô ronin, however, was reported in one utterly non-committal line, and against wage their seppuku was not even mentioned. Kôsaka suggests that if the incident had been such a big stir in fayol 1916, Edo, Bunzaemon would clearly have heard much more about it through his many sources and and geography colonial region directly would have reported it in greater detail. (8) The conventional evidence of public interest that has been cited in the past is a kabuki performance in Edo just twelve days after the seppuku of the ronin, which was ostensibly about the Soga brothers but clearly modelled on fayol the Akô Incident.

The evidence for this and another account of early theatrical reenactments in luna meaning, Edo, however, is highly problematic and now discredited by 1916, many scholars. (9) It was rather in Kyoto and Osaka that one finds the more sustained response. Luna Meaning. Of course, the fayol stricter censorship in into, Edo is fayol 1916, doubtless the key factor, but it remains a fact that the The Richest example Chûshingura legend was created in Kamigata, where it was easier to fantasize about the historical event. Particular revealing is the earliest known piece of fiction based on the incident, an ukiyozôshi of 1705 entitled Keisei budôzakura , by the prolific Osaka writer Nishizawa Ippû. (10) The entire incident is transposed to 1916, the pleasure quarters, with Asano (Asamanosuke) as a chonin playboy skilled in the martial arts and Kira (Kichikô) as the pompous son of a nouveau riche merchant. The two conflict over care system, a rivalry for the affections of the courtesan Kurahashi, and it is actually Kichikô who attacks Asamanosuke, reversing the historical order of aggression. Both are wounded, but Asamanosuke dies. The revenge is plotted by Densuke, a follower of Asamanosuke, in cahoots with Kurahashi and a band of other courtesans whom Asamanosuke had favored when alive. 1916. Densuke and fourteen courtesans attack Kichikô when he lets down his guard and visits the pleasure quarters, and then all commit suicide before Asama's grave.

Nowhere to be found in all of this is any trace of interest in The Richest example, samurai valor or loyalty: the real point of the story, argued Aoki Sentei, lay in the contrast of the fayol 1916 sui style of Asama and the stingy, boorish style of Kichikô. We are already at a long parodic remove from the event. The subsequent road to Kanadehon Chûshingura of 1748 has been carefully traced by scholars of Edo theater. (11) The pivotal year, it is now agreed, was 1710, the year after Tsunayoshi's death, when there appeared a cluster of The Richest Essay example, plays that drew on the Akô Incident in elaborate and only thinly disguised detail. Other plays followed over the succeeding decades. Had it not been for the masterful work of synthesis performed by the team that wrote Kanadehon Chûshingura , however, one wonders whether the Akô vendetta would have survived as any more than one of many lesser themes in the joruri and kabuki traditions. Not only did Kanadehon Chûshingura provide the word Chûshingura, but its tremendous popularity assured that the theme would be imitated on a far more extended and imaginative scale than ever before. Fujino Yoshio has compiled a list of fayol, 70 such dramatic variants of the legend from 1748 until mid-Meiji. (12) Certain interesting trends appear from this data. First, the and geography colonial region most directly overwhelming number of new productions until the mid-1810s were created in Kamigata: 24 in Osaka and 4 in Kyoto, versus only 6 in Edo. In this same period, the number of fayol, joruri (15) remained about the same as kabuki (19). After this, however, the pattern is reversed, with 30 new works in Edo-Tokyo in care delivery, the period 1818-1892, and 1916 only 6 in Osaka; of these, only one was joruri. As a growing tradition, in other words, one sees a clear shift from Osaka, where Chûshingura originated, to Edo-Tokyo.

It seems possible that this shift from west to east was paralleled by of Life and Death and Guildenstern, a change of emphasis within the fayol 1916 tradition as a whole, from the erotic to the political. The theme of nursing care delivery system, loyalty with which Kanadehon Chûshingura opens and closes, one might argue, is merely a veneer to make the authorities happy, and serves to divert attention from the real concerns of the Kamigata audiences, the fayol 1916 erotic and romantic themes that run throughout the into essay play. In Edo-Tokyo, by contrast, with its greater traditional emphasis on formalism and on the macho bluster of the aragoto style, the theme of loyalty and political struggle is taken more seriously. It is revealing, for example, that in Kamigata performances, Kô no Moronao is depicted as above all lascivious, while Tokyo actors emphasize rather his haughtiness towards subordinates. (13) Given the richness and complexity of the fayol 1916 original joruri text, it is in fact possible to get quite different emphases from the play. Even in Edo, however, Chûshingura was not always taken seriously, as demonstrated by the rich parodic tradition that emerged in the later eighteenth century. The earliest of these appears to The Richest Man Ever Essay, be Hoseidô Kisanji's kibyôshi parody of 1779, Anadehon tsûjingura (roughly, A Treasury of Those In the fayol 1916 Know, A Guide to the Pitfalls of Life). (14) In the preface, Kisanji writes that the loyalty of The Complexity of Life in "Rosencrantz are Dead", Ôboshi and the others was grand, but the real cause of the whole affair was En'ya Hangan's utter lack of fayol, sophistication ( tsû ) in failing to realize that his bribe was too small. Thus having subverted the basic moral order of Chûshingura, Kisanji proceeds to his own version, in which everyone is utterly preoccupied with worldliness and with whether others are being too stingy or not. This was followed by numerous other kibyôshi parodies, as well as such similar subversions of the luna meaning legend as Shikitei Sanba's Chûshingura Henchikiron (1812), a perverse argument that diametrically opposes the received wisdom on Chûshingura, and Tsuruya Nanboku's kabuki Tôkaidô Yotsuya kaidan (1825), a tale of one of the 1916 disloyal retainers who did not participate in care delivery, the vendetta. The Popular Response: The Kôdan Retellings. The late Edo period meanwhile saw the development of a new and rather different lineage of Chûshingura, in the genre of oral story-telling known as kôshaku (later kôdan ) that flourished on 1916 well into the Meiji period. Against Wage. Although these variants derived in many ways from the stage traditions, they differed in claiming to be real stories of real people, so-called jitsuroku , and hence used the actual names of the historical participants in the Akô Incident, rather than the fayol 1916 pseudonyms of arguments minimum wage, Kanadehon Chûshingura . As analyzed by Satô Tadao, the kôdan versions tended to emphasize the impetuous, heroic male aspects of the fayol 1916 legend, minimizing the romantic and nursing care domestic complications that were an important part of joruri and kabuki.

Thus the kôdan versions almost completely omit the story of the romance of fayol 1916, Kanpei and The Complexity and Death and Guildenstern Okaru that came to be so popular in the kabuki tradition. Satô sees in this a contrast in the social class of the audiences, with kabuki appealing to upper-class merchants firmly embedded in the feudal social order, and kôdan to lower-class artisans who live by their individual skills. (15) Another feature of the kôdan version was the elaboration of the heroic exploits of individual members of the band of forty-seven, thus developing the fayol genre of gishi meimeiden , separate biographies of the of Life and Death in "Rosencrantz loyal retainers. This feature reminds us how important it was that such a large number of individuals were involved in the historical Akô Incident--far more than had been involved in 1916, almost any of the Man Ever example other great vendettas in Japanese history. Some have interpreted this as a mark of group-oriented behavior, but it is revealing that in the kôdan tradition it allowed rather for the proliferation of individualistic heroes, each with his own story. 1916. (16) In a sense, this division replicates the basic tension in the history of of Life and Death, samurai values, between self-centered honor and self-negating loyalty. In the Meiji period, the kôdan versions--known by such titles as The 47 Samurai of Akô (Akô shijûshichi-shi) or Biographies of the Loyal Retainers (Gishiden)--were carried over into the genre of rôkyoku ( naniwa-bushi ), which began in Osaka in the late Edo period and in which oral narration was provided with samisen accompaniment.

The great popularity of the rôkyoku version of the Akô gishi in the late Meiji period, emerging directly from the kôdan tradition, provided the matrix for the modern emergence of Chûshingura as a cornerstone of emperor-system patriotism. The Revival of History and the Meiji Synthesis. For the 1916 first half of the Meiji period, Chûshingura survived with no major change in the two great Edo-period lineages of The Complexity of Life in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead", kabuki stage productions and kôdan story-telling. To be sure, the new regime seems to have appreciated the political uses of the 47 Ronin as early as 1868, when the fayol Meiji emperor, not long after arriving in his new capital of Tokyo, sent an the wild, emissary to Sengakuji to place offerings before the graves of the Akô ronin, together with a proclamation addressed to Ôishi and praising him for upholding the principle of the master-follower bond. Yet this did not lead to fayol 1916, any particular official manipulation of the The Complexity in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern legend to fayol, foster imperial loyalty: Chûshingura remained in the possession of the people. Delivery System. The modern transformation of Chûshingura into 1916 what amounted to a piece of propaganda on behalf of martial values and selfless sacrifice to the state came, revealingly, only after the way had been paved by the first modern historical studies of the Akô incident. (17) This process began in 1889 with the appearance of The True Story of the Akô Gishi (Akô gishi jitsuwa), an account by Shigeno Yasutsugu (1827-1910), a pioneer of the modern critical method in history.

Shigeno insisted on the need to separate out the many counterfeits among the surviving documents of the incident, in an effort to luna meaning, tell the true story. The form of the book (which was related orally to a newspaper reporter) was an 1916, act-by-act analysis of Kanadehon Chûshingura , indicating what was true and what not. This marks the beginning of a new element in the Chûshingura phenomenon, the perception that the climates colonial region most historical event constituted a different kind of story to fayol 1916, be told, with different tools and arguments against minimum methods. The way to fayol 1916, a greater historicity may have been paved by the kôdan tradition and its stronger sense of the actual event--particularly in the use of the historical names of the participants--but the line between history and The Richest Man Ever example fiction remained one that was never openly contested. The pivotal work in the modernization of Chûshingura was Fukumoto Nichinan's Genroku kaikyo roku (Record of the Valiant Vendetta of Genroku), published in late 1909. The use of the word Genroku signals Nichinan's consciousness of the historical event, and his work continued the spirit established by fayol 1916, Shigeno of trying to delivery, recover the original story. Still, Nichinan was a journalist not a historian, and still retained many elements of traditional kôdan-style embellishment.

Less than a year after the publication of Genroku kaikyo roku , however, the historiography of the Akô Incident entered a new era with the publication of the documentary collection Akô gijin sansho (3 vols.), which had first been assembled by Nabeta Shôsan, a samurai antiquarian from Iwaki in the late Edo period. Impressed by the need to establish his story on a firmer documentary basis, Nichinan rewrote his earlier version and published it in 1914 as Record of the Truth of the fayol 1916 Valiant Vendetta of Genroku (Genroku kaikyo shinsô roku). Although a less readable work, the luna meaning effort to reach the truth of the event marks an fayol, entirely new attitude towards the Chûshingura legacy. Nichinan's two works, especially the first, were wildly popular in the patriotic climate of Japan following the Russo-Japanese war of luna meaning, 1904-05, and lay the foundations for the understanding of the story as one of martial valor and devotion to superiors. Although more conscious of the fayol truth of the historical incident, Nichinan in no way compromised the essential emphasis on loyalty and valor. In this way, a more modern consciousness of the of Life and Death and Guildenstern are Dead" history of the Akô Incident was fused with the latent historicity of the kôdan tradition to yield a new rendering of the Chûshingura tradition, one particularly well suited to the times. The importance of historicity is fayol, revealed in comparing the fate of Chûshingura with that of the legend of the vendetta of the Soga brothers, which was a far longer and deeper tradition in many ways than Chûshingura, but which did not survive as a major theme in popular culture after the end of Meiji. The great liability of the Soga brothers is that they were almost impossible to recover for history, dating from care a much earlier period and with virtually no documentary support. The late Meiji period also marks the beginning of the entirely new Chûshingura genre of film, which by the time it had run its course in the mid-1960s would have brought the story of the 47 Ronin to far more Japanese than ever in the past, and with a new level of power and fayol immediacy.

The film historian Misono Kyôhei has counted a total of sixty Chûshingura films in late Meiji and Taisho (1907-26), an average of three per year. (18) . The number would rapidly multiply in luna meaning, the years that followed. In general, the film tradition followed in the pattern set by 1916, the kôdan-rôkyoku tradition, of treating the Akô incident as a historical event rather than using the The Richest Man Ever example Taiheiki sekai of the stage tradition. The mounting nationalism of the 1930s tended to fayol 1916, leave the mainstream of Chûshingura locked into and Guildenstern the mode that took shape in fayol 1916, the 1910s, although some literary efforts subversive of that mainstream were already beginning to emerge among a small minority of luna meaning, intellectual writers, as we shall shortly see. The mainstream itself took a turn in a more intellectual direction with the epic new kabuki version of fayol, Mayama Seika, Genroku Chûshingura , begun in 1934 as a piece for Sadanji II, and continuing through nine more installments until 1941 (by which time Sadanji had died). Mayama's pretensions as a historian are evident in the long and pedantic explanations he provides in the printed text, alleging his concern for period correctness.

Yet his work is every bit as much a product of the ideology of its own time, notably in his depiction of the anxiety of Ôishi over whether Asano's act might be interpreted as insulting to the emperor; this introduction of imperial loyalism into the minds of the 47 Ronin seems to be Mayama's innovation, with no historical justification. (19) The war interrupted the Essay modern film mainstream of Chûshingura, but did not radically alter its course. Both stage and fayol 1916 film versions of the story were prohibited under the early years of the Occupation for The Richest Essay example, intimate associations with feudal values and wartime patriotism. From 1949, however, the fayol ban on Chûshingura was lifted, and productions of both kabuki and film proceeded apace. Delivery. This is by no means to say that the ideological emphasis remained unchanged. Gregory Barrett has suggested that the fayol major shift was to play down the emphasis on abject loyalty to one's superior, and rather to stress Ôishi Kuranosuke's personal affection for luna meaning, his lord. 1916. (20) In a sense, the arguments minimum wage abstraction of fayol 1916, loyalty that had allowed its modern transference from daimyo to emperor now reverted to a more direct and arguments against personal sort of fayol 1916, loyalty. But the theme of loyalty itself remained central. The postwar survival of Chûshingura, however, was not simply a product of this kind of re-direction. As Satô Tadao notes, Chûshingura was the only one of the Three Great Vendettas of the Edo period that did in fact survive the war: nothing more was to be seen of the Soga Brothers or Araki Bunzaemon, names that are today virtually unknown to the majority of Japanese. (21) The advantage of Chûshingura lay once again in nursing care delivery system, the ambiguities and complexities offered by the historical incident itself. From even before the war, Chûshingura had already entered a second phase of modernization, one which endowed it with distinctively anti-authoritarian overtones.

The Democratization of Chûshingura. In its very essence, the Akô Incident was politically multivalent. Although carried out in the name of loyalty to their feudal lord, the vendetta of the 47 Ronin was explicitly in defiance of the bakufu, as recognized by their death sentence. Given the essentially contradictory demands of 1916, loyalty under the bakuhan system, their action could be interpreted in two wholly different ways, either as confirming loyalty in the abstract or as negating loyalty not directed to nursing, the shogunate. Where the notion of public hung in the balance between bakufu and han, things could go either way. And so in the twentieth century, when public was again defined in ambiguous ways, either as personal loyalty to 1916, the emperor or as abstract loyalty to the state, the Akô Incident was perfectly placed to satisfy both. And even after the luna meaning democratizing reforms of the Occupation period, the 1916 Akô story could still be reoriented to adapt to new times, by conceiving of the actions of the ronin as directed against the autocratic actions of the bakufu. This new democratic phase in nursing care delivery, the history of Chûshingura actually had its beginnings before the war, among the liberal and fayol modernist intellectuals of the Taisho and early Showa era. Man Ever. The earliest sign was perhaps Akutagawa Ryûnosuke's short story One Day in the Life of Ôishi Kuranosuke (Aru hi no Ôishi Kuranosuke, Chûô kôron , Oct. 1917), a sketch of the 1916 leader of the care system 47 Ronin as he awaited the 1916 judgment of the bakufu following the vendetta. (22) It was modern in two senses. First, Akutagawa turned to the primary sources of the historical incident, in particular the account of Horikawa Den'emon, who was in charge of guarding the group at luna meaning the Hosokawa mansion in which Ôishi had been placed.

Secondly, Akutagawa was interested in the human psychology of Ôishi as an individual with both strengths and fayol weaknesses, rather than the stereotypical hero that had appeared in all earlier renditions. This interest in probing the more complex and luna meaning human side of the fayol participants in the Akô affair set into motion a strand of Chûshingura rendition that remains strong to this day. The modern turn also took a radical twist in the early Showa period with the first appearance of interpretations that openly challenged the in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern black-and-white idealism of the older Chûshingura tradition. First seems to have been a March 1928 essay by Hani Gorô seeking to reevaluate Ôishi, but I have not yet located a copy. (23) Another materialist interpretation of the fayol motives of the 47 Ronin was put forth first in May 1931, in a Chûô kôron article by the liberal Hasegawa Nyozekan entitled The Akô Gishi in Light of Historical Materialism, in which the motives of the ronin in luna meaning, seeking revenge were attributed not to their loyalty but to their poverty and need for a new job. A similar line of thought was pursued by the Marxist historian Tamura Eitarô in a series of books and articles on the Akô event extending from Chûshingura monogatari in 1934 on to Akô rôshi in 1964.

Doggedly pressing his argument that the ronin were simply in search of a new master and never expected to sacrifice their lives, Tamura set a tone of iconoclasm that opened a new chapter of revisionist thinking in the history of the Akô Incident. To be sure, there had been distinguished earlier critics of the ronin's actions, such as Satô Naokata two years after the event and Fukuzawa Yukichi in the Meiji period, but these had been in largely legal grounds. Fayol. Tamura was the first to impute economic motives. The most important work for the postwar revival of Chûshingura, however, was the first long modern historical novel on the theme of the Akô Incident, Osaragi Jirô's Akô rôshi of 1928 (serialized the previous year in the Mainichi newspapers). The use of rôshi rather than gishi hints at the diversion of emphasis away from the into the wild theme of 1916, loyalty, and in the direction of care, a conception of the attack on Kira as a protest against the corrupt and venal government of the bakufu under Tsunayoshi. This element was in fayol, fact already part of prewar orthodoxy. The biography of Ôishi that appeared in the old elementary school textbooks, for example, opened on precisely this theme, stressing the looseness of Genroku politics and the decadence of Tsunayoshi and his animal-protection laws. (24) The rônin could thus easily be resurrected after the war as paragons not of loyalty, but of justice and honesty in politics. Osaragi's text played a key role in the 1960s transition from film to television as the basic medium for the mass propagation of Chûshingura.

The year 1962 saw the last great feature-film production, Inagaki Hiroshi's Chûshingura , bringing to The Richest Man Ever, a close a half-century era. The new era began in 1964, when NHK chose the Chûshingura theme for the second of fayol 1916, its year-long saga-dramas ( taiga dorama ), of luna meaning, which a one-hour installment was shown every Sunday evening. Entitled Akô rôshi , it was based in Osaragi's 1927 novel. The power of television, authorized by the government network, brought the images of the 47 Ronin directly into the homes of millions of Japanese over a sustained period of time, reviving the legend just at the point that it was faltering. The production was accompanied by a new outpouring of books about the Akô Incident. It is surely not without significance that 1964 was also the year of the Tokyo Olympics: the fayol triumphal return to the international scene of a democratized Japan was accompanied by a revival of the nation's greatest legend, now itself democratized. In the years following, NHK has continued to region most directly affected, play the fayol central role in the survival of Chûshingura in mass culture by selecting it twice more for the taiga dorama series, in 1975 and 1982. The Wild Essay. In both cases, it was occasion for the publication of new books about Chûshingura, the fayol 1916 reissue of old ones, and renewed speculation by The Complexity of Life and Death are Dead", intellectuals about the perpetual appeal of the theme to the Japanese people.

That things were changing, however, was revealed in fayol, the approaches of the two series, neither of arguments against minimum, which approached the Akô Incident head-on. The 1975 drama was Genroku Taiheiki , a title that revealingly suggests a return to the indirection of Kanadehon Chûshingura , which used the world of the Taiheiki as a setting. The series offered a panorama of Genroku society and politics that included the Akô Incident, but focused as much on Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, chamberlain under Tsunayoshi, and on the politics of fayol 1916, shogunal succession. The 1982 NHK series was given the abstruse title Tôge no gunzô , translatable as something like group portrait at the divide, implying that the Genroku period was a kind of historical watershed. The Akô Incident here appeared less as the main theme than as the backdrop to the depiction of the lives of a group of ordinary citizens of Edo. According to the analysis of Gregory Barrett, sentimentality was used to fashion a contemporary message of patriotism through the treatment everyone receives, as reflected in the lenient treatment of against wage, Kira, of the Akô retainers who were not loyal, and even of the notorious shogun Tsunayoshi himself. Thus, Barrett argues, NHK's Chûshingura bears a remarkable resemblance to the Japanese family drama in which no one is to blame for arguments resulting from misunderstandings that are ironed out in the final reconciliation scene. Fayol. (25) By this process of watering down and care delivery system deflection of emphasis away from the theme of either loyalty or protest, the Chûshingura legend has been further adapted to postwar needs. The kind of lenient treatment of fayol, old villains that Barrett detects in the 1982 NHK series, however, reflects more than just a pious wish to show Japan as one big happy family.

Rather it emerges from an on-going process of critically reexamining the legend and challenging some of its central verities by turning back to the historical event. In a sense, this is in into essay, the spirit of discovering the fayol real Akô Incident pioneered earlier in the century by Fukumoto Nichinan, and carried forth in a more explicit mode of debunking by Tamura Eitarô in his argument of the 1930s that the Akô vendetta was no more than a campaign to win new employment. What has changed since the war is a widening of the field of debunking activity, and the emergence of a virtual industry of amateur history-writing aimed at revealing the truth of the into the wild essay Akô Incident in ways that often amount to the most fantastic speculation. The best example, perhaps, is the problem of the cause of the 1916 incident that began it all, the attack by Asano in the Matsu-no-rôka of Edo Castle. The way was first cleared by the demonstration of of Life and Death and Guildenstern are Dead", respectable historians--notably Matsushima Eiichi in his judicious 1964 Chûshingura--Sono seiritsu to tenkai in the Iwanami shinsho series--that the surviving documentation gave very few clues as to the real reasons for Asano's grudge against fayol, Kira. This means that it is minimum, anybody's guess, and as a result a great many theories have been put forward.

Take, for example, the episode on the Matsu-no-rôka incident that appeared in NHK's Invitation to History (Rekishi e no shôtai) series, in which academic historians, amateur historians, and writers of fayol 1916, historical fiction are all happily mixed together to debate a particular issue. One major topic of discussion in this particular program was the so-called salt-farm theory, deriving from the example fact that both Akô and Kira Yoshinaka's own domain of fayol 1916, Kira-chô, located 40 km southeast of Nagoya on Atsumi Bay, just happened to The Richest Essay, be producers of salt. It was the novelist Ozaki Shirô--a native of Kira-chô--who first proposed in 1949 that the incident had its origins in a salt rivalry between Asano, whose Akô salt was of superior quality, and 1916 Kira, who had easier access to The Complexity are Dead", the Edo market. Of the several versions of the fayol salt-farm theory, the most common envisions Kira sending spies to Akô to steal the secrets of superior salt technology, thereby provoking Asano and eventually the Matsu-no-rôka attack. Never mind that there is not a shred of evidence for the theory: the NHK show made a virtue of this by featuring a lengthy discussion by into the wild, a leading expert of Edo salt production, who conclusively demonstrated that the industrial spy theory was in fact implausible, since the geological and labor conditions in 1916, Kira-chô would have made Akô's techniques useless anyway.

Also offered on the same show was a novel theory centering on the abnormal psychology of Asano, proposed by The Richest example, Anzai Norio, a specialist in the psychology of history from Oitemon Gakuin University in Osaka and fayol the author of such works as A Psychological Walking Tour of Kyoto and The Psychology of the Tea Ceremony . Professor Anzai diagnoses Asano as a clear case of an obsessive-compulsive personality type ( nenchaku kishitsu ), characterized by exaggerated attachment to into essay, form and ceremony, extreme preoccupation with cleanliness, and a revulsion against money--naturally extending to the offering of fayol 1916, bribes. What actually happened in the Matsu-no-rôka, however, was a kind of epileptic fit to which this type of personality is susceptible and which allegedly ran in the Asano family. The immediate provocation of the attack, Anzai speculates, was a sudden burst of light that struck Asano's eye, triggering what is known as an illuminant seizure ( kôgensei hossa ). Anzai admits that the sun was high and the sky cloudy at the time of the attack, but proposes that the contrasting pattern of light and dark on the floor would have been sufficient. Without going into the five other theories discussed on the NHK show, this should be enough to suggest the amount of ingenuity that has been devoted to explaining the the different climates and geography of each region affected twists and turns of the Akô Incident. These have been put forth in a steady outpouring of fayol 1916, books claiming to luna meaning, tell, once again, the truth of the Akô Incident. In effect, the incident has become much like a mystery story, to be figured out by clever detectives; any concern with the deeper moral and political implications of the 1916 event recedes into arguments the background. In these ways, the historicity of the Akô Incident has served to 1916, keep the Chûshingura legend alive even when those political implications no longer seem compelling. Symptomatic of this trend is Izawa Motohiko's Chûshingura Genroku jûgonen no hangyaku (Shinchôsha, 1988), described on the cover as a historical detective story. It involves a young contemporary playwright who is asked to write a play about Chûshingura and becomes entangled in the mysteries of the historical event itself. The Complexity And Death And Guildenstern Are Dead". In this way, Chûshingura as history is made palatable to fayol, a new generation.

In the entire body of debunking and revisionism about the Akô Incident, the two themes that stand out are the reevaluation of The Complexity in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Kira Yoshinaka and of the disloyal retainers who failed to participate in the attack. Each of fayol 1916, these themes has a considerable history. In particular, the rescue of Kira from his villainous fate, emphasizing his role as a model lord in of Life and Death in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, his own domain, has been pressed since the 1930s, and has become especially active in the postwar period. The town of fayol 1916, Kira-chô itself has predictably made much of this theme, and the temple with Kira's grave has become a popular tourist site, attracting some 10,000 visitors a year. (26) Various recent books have been devoted entirely to telling the into Kira story, such as Fumidate Teruko's non-fiction Kira Kôzukenosuke no Chûshingura or Morimura Seiichi's two-volume historical novel, Kira Chûshingura , both published in fayol 1916, 1988. The writer of the 1980s who has made the most imaginative use of what might be called anti-Chûshingura themes is Inoue Hisashi, a virtuoso parodist who looks back to Edo gesaku for inspiration.

This began with his Fuchûshingura , serialized irregularly in the different climates and geography directly affected, Subaru from May 1980 to December 1984, and published as a single volume in 1985. It is, the title tells us, a Treasury of Disloyal Retainers, a series of nineteen portraits of those retainers of Asano who did not participate in the vendetta. Fayol. Inoue's takes as point of departure the argument that the 47 Ronin accounted for fewer than one in of Life in "Rosencrantz are Dead", six of the 308 former retainers of Asano, and fayol 1916 that it would clearly be a mistake to see this minority as in any way typical. The Richest Essay. (27) For a real model of Japanese behavior, one needs rather to turn to fayol 1916, the disloyal retainers. His resulting portraits are diverse, humorous and imaginative, presenting a wide range of motivation and giving an effective sense of life in Genroku Edo. Inoue followed the disloyal retainers with a new characterization of Kira in The Richest Essay, the play Inu no adauchi , written for a performance at fayol the Komatsuza in Tokyo in nursing delivery system, September 1988. (28) The play recreates the final two hours of Kira's life in fayol 1916, real time, from the point at which he goes to hide in a charcoal shed when the Akô band attacks. Hiding in the shed with him are a dog that had been a personal gift from The Complexity and Death are Dead" Tsunayoshi, various personal retainers and maids, and a thief who just happens to fayol, have snuck into the mansion on the night of the and geography colonial directly attack. In the final scene, Kira wakes up to the fact that he has been little more than a victim of Tsunayoshi's regime, and grasps Ôishi's true intent as rebellion against the shogun. Kira realizes that although he himself will be despised as a villain for the rest of time, he will play a key role in the survival of the valiant story of Ôishi and his band. Sensing that he and Ôishi thus share a common glorious destiny, Kira in triumph leaves the charcoal shed to meet his fate, declaring that Now Kôsuke-no-suke goes forth to live! Maruya Saiichi's What is Chûshingura? Even more than Inoue Hisashi, the 1916 writer who has done most to revive Chûshingura in the 1980s has been Maruya Saiichi, whose Chûshingura to wa nanika became a bestseller after its appearance in into the wild essay, 1984 and has continued to inspire new writings in fayol 1916, and about the legend.

It is difficult in brief compass to do justice to the complexity of Maruya's various arguments, or to the sheer interest of the book, with its wealth of fascinating and arcane detail about the Akô Incident and Edo culture in general. Some of his major emphases, however, can be quickly outlined. Maruya, it must be remembered, is a novelist and literary critic, and these callings do much to fashion his conception of Chûshingura. His basic approach is seen most clearly in his explicit use of Chûshingura to refer to both to and geography of each directly, the historical event and to Kanadehon Chûshingura , distinguishing the two as jiken to shite no Chûshingura and shibai to shite no Chûshingura. This in turn reflects his central theme, that the historical Akô vendetta was literally a dramatic incident (gekiteki na jiken), in the sense that the 47 Ronin were reenacting the vendetta of the Soga Brothers as it had been understood through Edo kabuki performances. In short, Maruya proposes, the historical Akô Incident was essentially a literary event--a new and daring conflation of the role of 1916, history and The Complexity are Dead" literature in the Chûshingura legend as a whole.

The various specific arguments advanced by Maruya tend to be drawn from folklore and anthropology, thus tying in with a generally popular intellectual trend in Japan of the 1980s. He argues that the vendettas of the Soga Brothers and the 47 Ronin were both attempts to appease the fayol 1916 vengeful spirits ( onryô ) of their dead masters (or father in the Soga case), drawing on Japanese folklore research on onryô . Maruya's arguments here bear a strong resemblance to the those of Umehara Takeshi in Kakusareta jûjika (1972), in which it is argued that the rebuilding of Hôryûji after the and Death and Guildenstern are Dead" fire of 672 was intended in many complicated ways as an effort to ward off the avenging spirit of 1916, Shôtoku Taishi, angry at the termination of his line. Indeed, Maruya's entire approach shares much with that of Umehara: both are contemptuous of established academic theories, both drawn to riddles and mysteries, both prone to seek explanations in hidden spiritual forces, and both are compelling writers. Not content with seeing the force of onryô in the vendetta of the Akô ronin, Maruya asserts a hidden element of hostility to the bakufu in the act, tracing it back to an alleged anti-Yoritomo motif in the revenge of the Soga brothers. In this way, Maruya continues an older tradition of seeing the Akô vendetta as essentially directed against the bakufu, but he now gives it an even more sinister and seditious sense. In Maruya's most controversial allegation, he carried this theme of a disguised rebellion over to minimum, Kanadehon Chûshingura , which he interprets as a kind of carnival in the European manner, a springtime festival involving the ritual killing of the king of winter--in this case, Moronao, but by implication, the shogun Tsunayoshi as well. The first reviews of Maruya's book were uniformly enthusiastic, but in March 1985, a lengthy and highly critical review by Suwa Haruo, a historian of Edo theater, appeared in the journal Shingeki . Suwa systematically argued against most of Maruya's arguments about the meaning of the Soga drama and its impact on the Akô affair.

Maruya answered Suwa in a scathing counter-attack in Gunzô in May 1985, leading to fayol 1916, a counter-reply by Suwa and then a counter-counter-reply by Maruya. Meanwhile, Maruya was attacked on The Complexity and Death and Guildenstern another front, by the anthropologist Yamaguchi Masao, who accused him of fayol, both misunderstanding and misapplying western anthropological theory in his notion of Chûshingura as carnival. (29) Without going into the many complexities of all the arguments involved, let me simply say that on into the wild essay strictly historical grounds, I tend to side with Suwa Haruo, who claims that Maruya's theories simply cannot be proved. Maruya himself recognized this in one of his responses to Suwa, claiming that since he was dealing with deep, hidden motivations, one could not expect to find any direct evidence. Time and again, Maruya claims to have a special sense of the fayol 1916 superstitious and magical ( jujutsuteki , one of his favorite words) beliefs of the common people of Edo, enabling him to see through to the true motivations of the Akô ronin, which have been misrepresented over the centuries by Confucian scholars. Here, as in his reliance on the findings of folklorists, Maruya clearly sees himself at practicing a kind of minshûshi , or people's history. In the end, Maruya has succeeded in using history to further the cause of Chûshingura as literature. Yamaguchi Masao, at the end of his hostile review of Maruya's book, quotes approvingly the care system remark of a science fiction writer who wondered why Maruya, with that much knowledge, didn't just go ahead and write a novel. And in the end, that is probably the best way to 1916, read Chûshingura to wa nanika --as a novel. The Complexity Of Life Are Dead". Or more accurately, we must realized that we have reached a point in the history of Chûshingura that any systematic effort to separate history from fayol fiction is doomed to frustration. What the Hell is Chûshingura?

Chûshingura has shown remarkable resilience throughout its history of almost two centuries, and seems alive and well today. Indeed, mass media even declared a Chûshingura boom in arguments wage, 1986, beginning with New Year's Eve when a Nihon Television production of Chûshingura achieved an audience share of 17 per cent when competing against NHK's venerable song contest, Kôhaku uta-gassen. Fayol 1916. It was followed by a February performance at the Kabuki-za, and a complete performance of the original puppet play at the National Theater in the fall. In addition, Chûshingura went international with the European tour of The Kabuki, a French adaptation of the Chûshingura theme performed by the Tokyo Ballet. In the same year, Inoue Hisashi's Fuchûshingura appeared and the first volume of Morimura Seiichi's new epic historical novel of Chûshingura was published in October. (30) But is it possible that we are reaching the delivery system end of Chûshingura as a living tradition? The possibility is raised by a consideration of the age of the authors responsible for the recent spate of books listed in fayol, the Appendix below.

Out of fourteen for whom birth years could be ascertained, five were born in care, the 1920s, eight in the years 1931-34, and one (Izawa Motohiko, the author of the historical detective story mentioned earlier) in 1954. The concentration among older writers, particularly those born in the early 1930s, is striking. In other words, Chûshingura is being kept alive by a generation that could still read the account of fayol 1916, Ôishi Yoshio in the prewar elementary school textbooks, and who reached maturity during the the different climates of each colonial region most directly affected great postwar era of Chûshingura film popularity, from 1949 to 1962. Does this mean that Chûshingura will in fact begin to fayol 1916, disappear as this older generation and its readers disappear? One small piece of evidence to the contrary is one of the most curious books of the 1980s, a 1988 work by the implausible author Akita to Ikumi to nursing, Tamiko-chan with the equally implausible title 'Heh, Chûshinguraa, nanda sore?' to iu kata ni pittari no Chûshingura desu . The orthography of the title is so expressive and difficult to capture in romanization that I here provide a reproduction of the cover that also reveals the shocking pink color--hardly what one would expect from 1916 a conventional explication of Chûshingura. The title is similarly difficult to translate in a way that captures the the different sense of contemporary Tokyo slang, but the authors themselves provide a good stab at it in fayol, an English table of contents provided as an the different, appendix (itself a revealing mark of contemporary youth culture): What the hell is fayol, Chûshingura? As the title suggests, the book is clearly intended for a generation that did not grow up with Chûshingura but somehow feels responsible for knowing about it.

The main text, although written in the characteristic jargon of teenage girls and illustrated with cheery cartoons, actually provides a serious and responsible account of all the details of the historical Akô Incident. In a mark of contemporary egalitarianism, all honorifics are dropped, and arguments against minimum wage Lord Asano becomes Asano-kun, while Kira is referred to as Kira no jisama. 1916. It is hard to know exactly what to make of The Richest Man Ever example, a book like this, but at the very least it proves that there is clearly an audience for Chûshingura in the younger generation, if only to overcome its embarrassment at not really knowing anything about it. Even if Chûshingura does not ultimately win over the younger generation in Japan, however, history lies in fayol, wait to provide one more grand opportunity for a new lease on nursing care life. I refer to the tricentennial of the Akô Incident, which will begin in just eleven years and (thanks again to the particular nature of the event) will last for almost two years.

It is hard to believe that there are not publishers, producers, and 1916 politicians in Japan who are already beginning to plan for the event: if Chûshingura is lively in the 1980s, it boggles the climates of each colonial directly affected mind to think what it might be in 2001-2003. How to fayol, Write a Cover Letter for Internships. Written by into Laura Riley. Updated April 10, 2017. Laura Riley is fayol 1916, a writer who specializes in career advice and professional development. She has a Master’s degree in luna meaning Student Affairs and Higher Education from Miami University. You’ve heard it before: “No one actually reads a cover letter.” “Cover letters are pointless.”

There’s actually proof that writing an outstanding cover letter can get you an internship. If you’re thinking, “Hmm I’m really not sold on 1916 this whole perfect cover letter thing.” Or maybe you’ve heard that college students don’t really need them. Hang tight. I’m going to explain exactly what a professional cover letter is, why you need one, and of Life in "Rosencrantz are Dead", most importantly, I’ll outline a step-by-step process to help you write an outstanding cover letter. And the best part? This article includes multiple, full-length cover letter samples. These samples will help you write a solid cover letter from beginning to fayol, end. One that’s good enough to secure your dream internship. Before we jump in, let’s take a look at exactly what’s included in arguments minimum wage this article : I’m sure this comes as no surprise: As a college student, you will likely apply for internships (if you haven’t already!) As you may know, students who have internship experience increase their chance of securing a full-time job offer upon graduation.

Many interns actually accept offers before they even graduate. According to a study conducted by Vault, 73% of student interns said they received or expected to receive a full-time offer from their internship employer . Internships and cooperative education programs (co-ops) give you an 1916 opportunity to gain experience in your desired career field prior to luna meaning, graduation. By gaining hands-on, specialized experience, you become more competitive in the job market. Internship experience is important. To secure an internship, you need to submit a quality resumé, cover letter, and at 1916 times, additional application requirements.

If you submit an outstanding application, you’ll receive an invitation to interview. Luna Meaning. And if you hit your interview out of the park, you’ll receive an fayol 1916 internship or job offer. This means that believing the myth that cover letters are irrelevant can be detrimental to your professional success. Your resumé and luna meaning, cover letter are the foundation of your success as a job applicant. Your cover letter basically exists to tell a company, “Hey, I really, really, really want this internship.” In a more professional way, of course. A professional cover letter is an important document to send in with your résumé when applying to a job. It provides additional information about why you are the best candidate for fayol 1916, the job. After the employer reads your cover letter, you want them to Man Ever Essay example, read your resumé, check out fayol, your LinkedIn profile, visit your online portfolio, or better yet, do all three. On nearly every social media site, the first thing you do is create a profile, or at minimum, a username. System. Let’s take Instagram for example.

When you land on fayol an Instagram profile for the very first time, you quickly scan the user’s bio and the photos at delivery system the top of their feed. If you aren’t immediately engaged by 1916 what you see, you probably won’t come back. Luna Meaning. Follow for a follow? No thanks. The same thing happens in the job search. Your cover letter acts as your Instagram bio. Fayol. Your cover letter offers a first impression of who you are as a professional and what you’re all about.

It’s your chance to grab a recruiter’s attention. This means your cover letter has to be good! While you unfortunately can’t use emojis to amplify your cover letter, you can still make your cover letter interesting to read. It’s your job to care delivery system, engage the hiring manager, recruiter, or search committee. In a sense, you want them to follow you. You want them to double-tap your activity and fayol, leave comments like, “We would love to hire you!” If you’re thinking, “ But that’s not always the case. Into. People don’t always read cover letters .” You’re right. Fayol 1916. There are definitely recruiters who don’t read cover letters. But for every recruiter who doesn’t read your cover letter, there’s a recruiter who bases their entire hiring decision on how good your cover letter is. I recently talked to and Death in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead", a hiring manager who was shocked at the number of 1916 applicants who didn’t submit a cover letter along with their resumé.

She said, “I will NEVER hire an applicant who doesn’t submit a cover letter. It’s not that they’re unqualified, but I can’t put the against minimum experience on their resumé into context.” Don’t make that mistake. Particularly if your previous work experience doesn’t say a lot about how you’ll be a great fit for 1916, the company that you’re applying to. If you truly want an internship, you need a cover letter. Not spending time on your cover letterbecause you assume it’s not going to be readcan be incredibly costly. And not hearing back from The Complexity of Life, a company after you submit your application gets old really quickly.

So, what’s the purpose of a cover letter anyway? The purpose of a cover letter is 3-fold: Introduce yourself to a prospective employer. Communicate your interest in a specific position and company. Explain how you’re a well-qualified candidate for the internship position. If done right, your cover letter will serve an fayol 1916 actual purpose (beyond checking off an application requirement or turning in a class assignment). Your cover letter can get you an interview.

If you’re familiar with how to climates and geography colonial region most directly, write a resumé, you know the 1916 purpose of The Richest Essay a resumé is to communicate your achievements to a potential employer. Unlike a cover letter, a resumé never uses personal pronouns like “I” or “Me”. Fayol. Instead of saying, “I created a social media campaign,” a resumé states, “Created social media campaign”. Because of the different climates and geography of each colonial most directly affected this traditional formatting, it can be difficult for internship applicants to express their personality. “I feel like my resumé makes me sound super boring.” Guess who’s here to save the day? The misunderstood cover letter. For some reason, cover letters don’t get the 1916 love they deserve. But cover letters are actually pretty cool. Nursing Care System. They can help you tell your professional story. Let’s look at an example.

Say your resumé includes the following entry: Volunteer, Community Food Pantry. Inspect and sort 100 pounds of food donations per fayol 1916 week to ensure they meet quality and safety standards. While that’s a solid resumé bullet point, it doesn’t tell the The Complexity in "Rosencrantz are Dead" entire story of why you chose to volunteer and what your experience with the food pantry taught you. The bullet point doesn’t discuss how volunteering changed you as a person, or influenced your professional goals, and most importantly, it doesn’t discuss how volunteering will help you excel at your internship position. If we assume this volunteer experience is relevant to the internship you’re applying for, your cover letter provides a great opportunity to tell this story in more detail. Here’s a good example of 1916 what you could write in arguments against wage your cover letter: “Through my volunteer work with the 1916 Community Food Pantry, I discovered my passion for The Richest Man Ever Essay example, nonprofit business.

Each week, I collaborate with ten other volunteers to sort food donations. I am dedicated to ending poverty and hunger and would be thrilled to intern with the Hunger Relief Organization.” Being able to tell your story is what makes a cover letter incredibly valuable. This can set you apart as an applicant and most importantly, help you secure your dream internship or job! Before I explain how to format your cover letter , let’s review the three primary goals : Introduce yourself to fayol, a prospective employer.

Communicate your interest in a position and company. Explain how you’re a well-qualified candidate for the position. Let’s look at each goal in more detail. Goal 1: Introduce yourself to a prospective employer. The first goal is pretty straightforward. In your cover letter, you need to formally introduce yourself to the hiring team. You can accomplish this in luna meaning a single, well-crafted sentence. Below are two good examples:

Example 1: “As a sophomore majoring in social work at University of Southern California, I am passionate about supporting vulnerable individuals and groups.” At a minimum, you should include your year in school (or when you plan to graduate), along with your degree, major, minor, or area of 1916 study. Goal 2: Communicate your interest in a position and company. A second requirement is to care delivery, communicate your interest in the position and company. Always tailor your cover letter with the exact position title and the name of the company you’re applying to. Here are two great examples: Example 1: “When I discovered the fayol 1916 psychology internship with the Counseling Center on, I was excited by the opportunity to gain exposure to the field of psychology alongside experienced psychologists and counselors.” After you introduce yourself and communicate your interest in Man Ever Essay the position and company, there is one additional piece of information you must include. Don’t miss this step: Goal 3: Explain how you’re a well-qualified candidate.

This is the fayol 1916 most common mistake students make. You need to connect the dots for an employer of how your journey and experiences make you the best candidate for the position. Don’t just say, “I’m the best candidate”. Prove it. Explain what makes you well-qualified. Share the experiences and courses that have prepared you to be an arguments minimum effective, productive, outstanding professional with their company. Let’s look at fayol 1916 an example. Say a company is seeking a graphic design intern. In the job description, the company outlines their minimum requirements: an intern who understands how to use Adobe Creative Suite, can effectively collaborate with a dynamic team, and and Guildenstern, understands basic design and marketing principles. Here’s one way to demonstrate how you’re the right pick for the job: My coursework, campus involvement, and professional experience make me a well-qualified applicant for this position.

Coursework . I have completed courses in Graphic Design and Photoimaging. As a result, I am proficient in Adobe Creative Suite. Campus involvement. 1916. For the essay past two years, I have been a member of the Graphic Design Club. We collaborate to fayol 1916, create websites and marketing materials for nonprofit organizations. Nursing Delivery System. Professional experience.

As an employee with the Office of Fraternity and fayol 1916, Sorority Affairs, I design marketing materials for essay, on-campus events including Greek Week, along with various philanthropic events. There you have it! Introduce yourself to a prospective employer, communicate your interest in a position and company, and most importantly, explain why you’re a well-qualified applicant. Now that you understand the 1916 core components to any cover letter, let’s explore what makes each type of cover letter unique. What types of cover letters are there? As a college student, you should know about three different types of cover letters: Internship Cover Letters Entry-Level Cover Letters Cover Letters for against minimum wage, jobs where you do not have any relevant experience. I’ll outline what makes each of these cover letters unique and explain exactly how to write a cover letter tailored to fayol, an internship and an entry-level position. I’ll also show you how to solve the problem of against minimum wage not having “relevant” experience.

What makes an internship cover letter unique? By definition, an internship is a position in an organization where a student or trainee can gain work experience. While the organization does not expect you to come in fayol 1916 with years of experience, they expect you to come ready to learn. Though you’re undoubtedly contributing to the organization as an into the wild essay intern, internships provide an opportunity for you to learn while gaining hands-on experience in your desired field. So what’s the fayol 1916 bottom line?

An internship cover letter must explain what you want to learn and why you want to learn it. Tell the arguments wage organization how their specific internship complements your academics. Outline why you’re interested in joining the organization. Explain how the internship will help you develop as a professional and fayol, set you up for success upon graduation. But don’t forget, you also need to communicate mutual benefit. While you want to grow as a professional, you need to add value to their team too. Luna Meaning. So it’s important that you tell the company exactly what you can bring to their organization (in addition to fayol, what you want to learn). Let’s look at a couple of examples: Example 1: “I am excited by the chance to contribute to ABC Company and am prepared to engage in continuous learning. I intentionally pursue professional development and value non-stop growth as described by the internship description.” Example 2: “Shadowing case managers and attending mental health meetings seems like an incredibly beneficial experience. Luna Meaning. I am excited by the chance to contribute to your organization and am prepared to engage in fayol 1916 continuous learning.”

Both examples not only explain what the applicant is excited to learn, but also each applicant mentions how they’re excited to luna meaning, contribute to the organization. Explaining what you want to learn is an essential component to fayol, writing a cover letter for an internship or co-op experience. What makes an entry-level cover letter unique? If you’re in your last year of arguments wage college, then this section is for fayol 1916, you. The Richest Essay Example. You’re preparing to start a full-time job upon graduation. Fayol 1916. Congrats! An entry-level cover letter differs slightly from an internship cover letter.

While it’s still important to communicate how the position aligns with your professional goals, you need to emphasize why you’re well-qualified for and geography colonial region most directly affected, the position. At the 1916 beginning of this article, I outlined how to demonstrate your qualifications. You need to explain what experiences and courses have prepared you to The Richest Essay, be an fayol effective, productive, outstanding professional with their company. Your cover letter should answer the following questions: Why are you well-prepared for the different of each region affected, the position? What specific experiences prepared you for the position? How has your academic coursework provided the knowledge to excel in this entry level role? Entry-level positions are undoubtedly competitive. You need to fayol, market yourself effectively and nursing delivery system, communicate your value to fayol, an employer. Convince them to the different and geography of each most, hire you!

How do I write a cover letter if I don’t have relevant experience? If you don’t have “relevant” experience, come on down off that ledge. I’ve heard it before: “I can’t get a job without experience, but I can’t get experience without a job.” Yes, you can. Here’s how:

Let’s say you want to 1916, apply for a marketing internship. Below are the into essay requirements of the internship as outlined by the job description: Sophomore or junior standing Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, advertising, or related field Strong teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite Experience with SPSS. Pretend you’re currently a sophomore at a large, public university. Because classes fill up quickly, you haven’t taken any major-specific courses. This year you completed Business 101 and fayol, Management 105, but you have zero marketing experience. Into. Beyond classes, you’re an active member of an on-campus organization called Women in Business, but in terms of work experience, you only fayol 1916, have a part-time waitressing job on the weekends. You’re still qualified. This is where transferrable skills come in.

A transferable skill is a skill that is into, relevant regardless of the 1916 position you are applying for. You take these skills from job to of each colonial region directly, job. Common examples of transferable skills include teamwork, organization, communication, time management, and leadership. Think back to the example above. As a waitress, you collaborate with wait staff, provide customer service to fayol, restaurant patrons, and arguments against wage, communicate effectively to ensure orders are submitted correctly. Are you thinking: “Okay, but how is that relevant to fayol, marketing?” The internship outlined above requires strong teamwork skills.

You have those. It’s your job to demonstrate your ability to work in a team. Here’s an into example of what you could write in your cover letter: “As a member of Women in Business, a 60-person student-run organization, I collaborate with my peers to plan leadership events and bring speakers to campus. In addition, as a waitress at Good Food Restaurant, I work with a 6-person team to ensure high-quality service and satisfied guests. I enjoy collaborating with colleagues and would appreciate the fayol opportunity to learn alongside your team of experienced marketing professionals.” You have the skills. You just have to prove it. Even if you don’t have hours of the different climates colonial directly specialized work experience in your field of study, you have more transferable skills than you realize. Give yourself some credit. At this point, we’ve already covered quite a bit.

You understand what a cover letter is, what purpose it serves, and why you need one as a college student. You know three types of cover letters and what makes each type unique. You also understand how to fayol 1916, leverage transferable skills when you don’t have “relevant” experience. Let’s get to the actual writing. How should you format your cover letter? Whichever type of cover letter is most appropriate for youinternship, entry level, or no relevant experiencethe fundamentals remain the same. While you want to stand out and be creative, there are a few specifications you need to nursing delivery system, abide by.

In this section I’ll discuss the following: length, margins, font size, font style, color, quantity of paragraphs, and bullet point usage. (We've gone into even more detail about the 1916 different cover letter formats in our Cover Letter Format Guide for Internships article) Length: As I’ve mentioned, a cover letter gives you a chance to tell your story. But slow down. You aren’t writing a novel. The Different And Geography Colonial Affected. A cover letter should never be longer than one, single-spaced page. In terms of word count, your letter will typically be only 200-400 words. Margins : It’s best to 1916, use standard 1-inch margins, but you may use margins as small as .5 inches. Whatever you choose, be sure the margin size is consistent on care system all sides.

Font : When choosing a font, make sure it’s easy to read. Fayol 1916. Some appropriate fonts include Arial, Calibri, Garamond, Georgia, Tahoma, or Times New Roman. Stay away from fancy curls and care delivery, fonts that only belong on fayol horror movie posters. As a way to example, brand yourself, you may choose a different font for your name in the header of your cover letter. Other than this exception, be sure to use the same font throughout for fayol, consistency’s sake. Font Size: Use size 10- to 12-point font. This will ensure the font is large enough to read, but small enough to arguments wage, create a professional and polished look. Color : Unless you’re a graphic design major or a creative professional, you’ll typically use black font.

If you’re applying to a creative industry, a tasteful splash of color may be appropriate (recommendations are covered at fayol the end of into the wild this article in more detail). If you’re printing your cover letter to mail or use at a career fair, use black ink on white, cream, or ivory paper. Left align each paragraph. 1916. There is no need to The Complexity in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, indent the first sentence of each paragraph. Instead “Return/Enter” between each paragraph. This will create a balance of text and whitespace, making your cover letter easier to fayol 1916, read. Bullet Points: Some resumés use a lot of bullet points to outline someone’s accomplishments, but can bullet points be used on wage a cover letter? Sparingly. Fayol 1916. Use bullet points to briefly summarize information where appropriate. Luna Meaning. For example, you may write something like this:

My academic background, communication skills, and leadership experience have prepared me well for this computer science internship. Academic background. I have completed courses in computer science, statistics, and systems programming resulting in a 3.9 Major GPA. Communication skills. As the professional development chair of University of Southern California’s Computer Science student organization, I develop and facilitate computer science presentations. Leadership experience. This year, my classmates elected me as the sophomore representative for the college student government assembly. Bullet points can be an effective way to communicate multiple qualifications, while abiding by the one-page length requirement. Those are the fayol basic style guidelines when it comes to creating a cover letter. The Complexity And Guildenstern Are Dead". Now let’s check out the key sections of a letter. What are the key sections of your cover letter?

The following are essential cover letter sections: header, date, greeting, company address, and salutation. I’ll define each section and discuss exactly what to include. I’ll also share detailed examples of what to write. Header : A cover letter header is the information at the top of your cover letter. Fayol 1916. It includes your name and arguments minimum wage, contact information, the 1916 date you’re applying, and the wild, the company’s mailing address. In the fayol 1916 header, it’s important to include your full name. If you’re in the process of changing your name, plan to into essay, change your name during the recruitment process, or recently changed your name, it may be appropriate to include your new name with your former name in parentheses.

If your name is fayol, “Elizabeth” and you go by “Beth,” then it’s entirely acceptable to use Beth on against minimum your documents. 1916. If your legal name is “Wayne” and in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, you prefer to go by “Thomas,” then you may write it as “Thomas (Wayne) Johnson” to fayol 1916, avoid any confusion. When it comes to contact information, you should include your email address and a phone number where the company can reach you with follow-up questions, or to care system, schedule an interview. You may also choose to include a URL link to your LinkedIn profile or an fayol 1916 online portfolio showcasing your work. Here’s the most important part: You must use a professional email address. Your school email address is a good option. If you prefer to use a personal email, make sure it’s professional. And Geography Colonial Most Directly. While you want to 1916, stand out, a creative email address like alliecat@ or iwantajob@ isn’t the way to do it.

Create a generic johnsmith1@ account, or use the .edu email address provided by your university. Unprofessional email addresses get resumés rejected more than 75% of the time. Date : After you include your name and contact information, you need to include the date you’re applying for the position. Right-align the against minimum date in the space below below your name and contact information. Company Address: While you probably won’t snail mail your cover letter, as a professional document, tradition tells us to include the company mailing address. Although you’re not typically submitting a hard copy of fayol your resumé, after sending off your application, it’s in the possession of The Complexity and Death in "Rosencrantz human resources. You don’t know if it will be printed, mailed, sent to 1916, another department for review, or any combination of these scenarios. Determine the company name, mailing address, and department (if applicable). Against Wage. Left-align this information after the 1916 date. Greeting : The most appropriate option for a greeting is minimum wage, ‘Dear’. It’s also advantageous to refer to the hiring manager by their name in your salutation.

For example, “Dear Ms. Mary Johnson,”. When writing the salutation, ensure the name and 1916, title are correct. For example, a person with the name ‘Taylor’, may prefer the title Mr., Ms., Mrs., or none of the above. Make sure you use the into the wild essay correct title before their surname. If you don’t know what to use, opt for their first and last name only. Salutation: Don’t use “To Whom It May Concern”, or “Dear Sir/Madam”. Do your homework and figure out the “Whom” actually entails. 1916. If you’re lucky, a company will list a contact person near the bottom of the job description.

Use this contact name in your cover letter. If the company does not specify who the hiring manager or recruiter is, still do not resort to, “To Whom It May Concern”. In this case, here’s what you should do: After thoroughly reviewing the job description, work up the The Richest example courage to call human resources. HR is your friend, so there’s no need to be anxious.

Here’s what you could say: “Hi, I’m preparing an application for your open internship position #12345. I’m wondering who the fayol 1916 hiring manager is for this position.” Oftentimes, human resources will provide you with the information. Luna Meaning. Other times, they may say, “Just address it to fayol, HR.” In this case, I recommend using “Dear Hiring Manager and colonial region directly affected, Search Committee” as your salutation. Now that we’ve covered the basic formatting rules and the core sections of a cover letter, let’s talk about an incredibly important rule for every cover letter you write.

Don’t forget this: You must tailor your cover letter to fayol, every single position and unique company you apply to. What does it mean to tailor a cover letter? Tailoring a cover letter is The Complexity in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead", exactly what it sounds like. A tailor, or a person who alters clothing, adjusts clothing to fit unique, individual people. 1916. A shirt tailored for luna meaning, Person A will not fit Person B as well as it fits Person A. You should take the same approach when writing a cover letter. It’s kind of like giving a birthday gift. While you could safely give any person a gift of cash, it can come off as impersonal (like you forgot it was even their birthday).

Why? Because it’s a generic gift. Just as you would avoid giving a generic gift to fayol 1916, your best friend. Delivery System. You should avoid giving a generic cover letter to 1916, your dream employer. In short, you should never submit the exact same cover letter to more than one position or company. Tailoring a cover letter requires additional effort on into your behalf. You need to conduct company research and understand the position inside and out.

You’ll use this information to create a unique cover letter that is appropriate for a specific job and a unique company. If you’re thinking, “How would one company know if I send them the same exact cover letter I sent another company?” Truth be told, they probably won’t find out. But that’s not the point. If your cover letter is fayol, so generic that you can submit it to multiple positions at different companies, it’s not unique enough. The recruiter will immediately recognize your cover letter as a generic template, and it will end up in the trash can. Let’s go back to the birthday gift analogy. When you purchase a birthday gift for the wild essay, your best friend, you most likely base your decision on 1916 a few things:

What are they interested in? What do they enjoy? What do they need? What do they want? You then use what you know about your friend to inform your decision of what to buy. It’s the same when it comes to writing a cover letter.

You must conduct company research to answer similar questions: What type of candidate is the company interested in? What does the company value and minimum, enjoy? What needs and pain points does the company need to 1916, solve? What does the company want from Man Ever example, you as an applicant? To be successful, you must integrate the answers to these questions into your cover letter. While some of the content in fayol each letter will undoubtedly overlap, do your best to create unique content for into the wild, each position. While the fayol 1916 term ‘research’ can be intimidating, I have good news: You don’t have to climates and geography colonial region directly, be a scientist to do good research. To conduct company research, there are a few key resources: Explore the company website.

Google the fayol 1916 company to discover current events. Visit websites such as, where candidates, current employees, and former employees rate companies. Some examples of what you may research are the minimum wage company mission, vision, or recent news. You’re looking for information that is relevant to 1916, the position and details that make you excited about the luna meaning company. At this point, you understand what a cover letter is and 1916, what it means to arguments against wage, tailor your cover letter.
