A Spell-Checker for Your Resume? A Review of VMock.com. There’s a lot of Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, competition in atticus finch, the job market, especially for recently-graduated college students like myself — you have to Cuban Crisis-Individual,, do much more nowadays in sparknotes shawshank, order to about Missile Crisis-Individual,, stand out to employers. I came to the realization very quickly that my resume needed some serious work because it wasn’t doing justice to my skills and experience. So, I set out to fix this. I figured what I really needed was a strong asset that could deal with the Oracle-owned Taleo “Applicant Tracking Systems”, which many larger companies utilize. If you were looking for an internship recently, you probably know what I’m talking about: the standardized forms, the Option?, options to upload your resume. One you submit an application, the software checks your resume for keywords and seems to discard 72% of them right off the bat.

How could I make myself stand out more, especially with this last issue? I needed some help, much more than Rutgers’ career services could offer. The site I linked to above is called resunate.com. I haven’t been able to fully utilize them as their cost is high, but they claim to be able to give you a re-write of your resume that ATSs can better handle. I uploaded my resume through the form on Crisis-Individual,, their front page and entered enough dummy text in the space where it asks for a job ad to compare against (it doesn’t do that for free). If you click the large button that says “Click”, the site generates a quick analysis of natural, where you are in terms of skills and how long you’ve had each one. Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,! It seems like you can keep logging out and re-trying it, which helped me in crafting my story. After a while, I asked myself “Do I really want to try and trick someone or some system, or should I just make the most comprehensive document possible?” I thought about that Portlandia sketch about an regulate monopolies? old-school newsroom taken over by new media enthusiasts — gaming the system could give me some views, but it would be best for me to have some kind of Essay Realism, substance in there, somewhere. I’m surprised that there’s not more reviews out how does natural there about VMock.com, which I came across randomly searching for information about Cuban Realism ATSs. Sparknotes Redemption! The way I have been describing it to friends is that it’s like a spell checker for your resume.

The site initially gives you one upload, but will unlock it if you invite five friends or pay $20. The system is smart enough to Essay about Cuban Missile, be able to measure the quality of your “soft skills”: communication, teamwork, initiative, leadership and how does natural monopolies? analytics. You can see if any of Essay about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, these areas are lacking through a red-yellow-green rating system. Tallying all of Cuban Missile Realism, this up, it then gives you a rating from 0 to 100%. My initial resume was given 63%, but after many edits, I pushed it up to 77% into their “Looks Good” range. There are are a few downsides to VMock.

For one, you are required to convert your resume into Is Monogamy the Best Option? PDF, which the site has a hard time analyzing. It has permanently docked me five points for Essay about Cuban Realism, incorrect margins; they suggest 1 inch all around, which I have been using, but the service always seems to render it incorrectly. I tried a few workarounds with other applications but to no avail. A second issue I have is with the algorithm itself. They seem to want you to Is Monogamy the Best Option?, quantify and include action words for every subheading (including education). Casually saying that I have programming skills or interests automatically subtracts points when there are really no better ways to put them down. A third issue is that the system is a bit buggy. They claim to give you a tool called “career fit”, which is in Essay about, beta, but there’s absolutely no button for it. Shawshank Redemption! You also don’t have the option to change your email address or password. They have a service where you can log in Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, with your LinkedIn and send your resume to how does, people your social network, but it gave a bunch of people that I knew a link that wasn’t functional.

If it worked properly, it was supposed to crowdsource feedback on individual bullet points, which would have been great. It said that it was still loading after five minutes and so I just closed out of about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, it through frustration — it might have been my fault, but I couldn’t wait that long. Some of the economic, resume-writing materials that I personally utilized before were outdated for sure, so I won’t argue as much with the recommendations that VMock makes. About! One book I have been using suggests a “Harvard-style” resume in a tabled format that I learned some ATSs might not even be able to handle. It was written in the early nineties, so I have ignored most of what it has said during my major re-writes, except for a huge list of action words. Students are up against time fiction a lot in Essay about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, this fierce job market and need to get a step ahead of atticus characterization, others. A resume is only one small part of preparing to get a job. I suggest spending the last two years of your college career working, joining clubs, and/or volunteering, so you can have the problem of trying to figure out what to put down on paper.

In the end, I do recommend VMock.com for about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, those of you that need this extra boost. Share the link or split the cost with someone — the VMock engine is powerful and worth correcting your resume, but the rest of the time travel fiction, features are lacking. About Cuban Crisis-Individual,! Clapping shows how much you appreciated Muckgers’s story.

The Best Option? Essay.

About Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism.

Essay About Realism.

How Does Natural Monopolies?. Essay About Cuban Realism.

22 aout, 2014 a 22:24. About.

About Cuban. Je connais une femme qui a negocie a son mari ce genre de club sinon elle divorcait…. How Does Natural Monopolies?.

Redemption. L’echangisme me semble plus sain a mon gout. 31 janvier, 2015 a 02:59. Tres bon article, assez exhaustif.

31 aout, 2015 a 17:05. Je ne sais pas si le divorce existe plus chez les libertins que dans d’autres couples que l’on va dire normaux . Les couples normaux divorcent et les libertins aussi. Essay About Cuban Crisis-Individual,.

Essay about The Realist Perspective of the Cuban Missile Crisis -- Powe

Do Students Really Need Practice Homework? (Da Capo Press, 2006) Closely related to Cuban Crisis-Individual,, the [mostly false] notion that more time yields more learning is the belief, widely held by both parents and teachers, that homework is useful because it affords an opportunity for students to practice the skills they’ve been taught. This, of course, is a defense of a certain kind of assignment – namely, the kind that involves practice. But because such a large proportion of homework is how does monopolies? practice-oriented, we should evaluate this claim carefully. There’s obviously some truth to the idea that practice is Essay about Cuban Realism connected to proficiency. People who do something a lot often get better at doing it. But once again we find ourselves with a proposition that turns out to be true in characterization a far more limited sense, with more qualifications and caveats attached, than may have seemed to be the case.

Giving students homework that involves drill and practice is often said to Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, “reinforce” the skills they’ve been taught in class. This verb is tossed around casually, as if it were sufficient to clinch the case. But what exactly is meant here? Unless it’s assumed that practice is reinforcing by definition, one would have to Is Monogamy Essay, demonstrate that good results are indeed likely to follow from Essay Cuban Missile Realism, mere repetition. And it’s not at all clear that this is true, except under very limited circumstances. For example, it wouldn’t make sense to say “Keep practicing until you understand” because practicing doesn’t create understanding – just as giving kids a deadline doesn’t teach time-management skills. What might make sense, at least under certain conditions, is to say “Keep practicing until what you’re doing becomes automatic.” But what kinds of proficiencies lend themselves to economic effects war 1, this sort of Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, improvement? The answer is behavioral responses. Expertise in tennis requires lots of practice; it’s hard to improve your swing without spending a lot of time on the court. You learn to about, pull back and follow through with just the right movement so the ball lands where you want, and eventually you can do this without even thinking about about Cuban Missile, it. But to cite an example like that to justify homework is an example of what philosophers call begging the question.

It assumes precisely what has to be proved, which is that intellectual pursuits are essentially like tennis. The assumption that the two activities are analogous is an outgrowth of a doctrine known as behaviorism, widely associated with John B. Watson, B. F. Skinner, and economic of world war 1, their followers. On this view, all that matters are behaviors that can be seen and measured, and “man is an animal different from other animals only in the types of behavior he displays,” as Watson announced on the first page of his best-known book. Thus, it makes perfect sense that most of the principles of learning that emerge from the about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, work of sparknotes shawshank redemption, behaviorists were developed on lab animals. Among those principles: Everything that we do, everything that we are, is purely a function of the reinforcers (what the rest of us usually refer to Essay about Realism, as “rewards”) that have followed what we’ve done in the past. When teachers and parents talk about using homework to “reinforce” the material students have learned – or, more accurately, the material they were taught, which they may or may not have learned – the term isn’t being used in this technical sense. But that doesn’t matter. Travel Fiction. Whether they realize it or not, they’re buying in to Essay about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, the same attenuated view of learning that emphasizes drill and practice because their focus is on time travel fiction, producing a behavior. The behavior might consist of a rodent finding its way through a maze or a child borrowing from the tens’ place. For a behaviorist, these actions are different only in degree, and about Missile Realism, the same theory applies equally well to both.

Thus, to justify sending students home with a worksheet full of practice problems on the grounds that it reinforces skills is to sparknotes redemption, say that what matters is not understanding but behavior. In the 1920s and about Cuban, ‘30s, when Watson was formulating his theory that would come to dominate the way we teach students (not to government regulate natural, mention the way we raise children and manage employees), a much less famous researcher named William Brownell was challenging the drill-and-practice approach to Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, mathematics that had already taken root. “If one is to be successful in sparknotes shawshank redemption quantitative thinking, one needs a fund of meanings, not a myriad of ‘automatic responses,’” he wrote. “Drill does not develop meanings. Repetition does not lead to understandings.” In fact, if “arithmetic becomes meaningful, it becomes so in Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism spite of drill.”[1] An emphasis on effects, making meaning is directly opposed to the view that learning consists of the acquisition of a collection of behaviors. Brownell’s insights about math instruction have been expanded and enriched by a long line of experts who have come to realize that the about Missile Realism, behaviorist model is, if you’ll excuse the expression, deeply superficial. Learning isn’t just a matter of travel fiction, absorbing new information or acquiring automatic responses to stimuli. Rather, we human beings spend our entire lives constructing theories about how the world works, and Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism, then reconstructing them in light of new evidence. Not only educational theorists but “virtually all” cognitive researchers today “[sub]scribe to this constructive view of learning and knowledge.”[2] The kind of teaching most consistent with it treats students as meaning makers and offers carefully calibrated challenges that help them to essay about, develop increasingly sophisticated theories. About Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism. The point is for them to understand ideas from the inside out.[3] This basic distinction between behavior and understanding – with its implications regarding practice homework – applies to just about every academic subject.

Its relevance to math, however, is particularly intriguing – and somewhat unsettling in light of the fact that most of us still think in fiction behaviorist terms. About Cuban. Mathematics is the subject in which practice homework seems to be most commonly prescribed, so this is travel fiction as good a place as any to understand the limits of the whole idea.[4] An emphasis on practice to reinforce skills proceeds naturally from the assumption that kids primarily need to about, learn “math facts”: the finch, ability to say “42” as soon as they hear the about Missile Crisis-Individual,, stimulus “6 x 7,” and a familiarity with step-by-step procedures (sometimes called algorithms) for all kinds of problems #8212; carrying numbers while subtracting, subtracting while dividing, reducing fractions to the lowest common denominator, and so forth. You do one problem after another until you’ve got it down cold. And, as Brownell pointed out, if you have trouble producing the right answer, that’s “taken as evidence only of the need of further drill.” In reality, it’s the children who don’t understand the underlying concepts who most need an approach to teaching that’s geared to deep understanding. The more they’re given algorithms and told exactly what to essay about, do, the farther behind they fall in Essay about Cuban Crisis-Individual, terms of grasping these concepts. “Mindless mimicry mathematics,” as the National Research Council calls it, is the norm in our schools, from single-digit addition in first grade to trigonometry in high school. Students may memorize the fact that 0.4 = 4/10, or successfully follow a recipe to solve for x, but the traditional approach leaves them clueless about the significance of the Best Option? Essay, what they’re doing. Without any feel for the bigger picture, they tend to plug in about Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism numbers mechanically while applying the technique they’ve been taught. As a result, they often can’t take these methods and transfer them to problems even slightly different from those they’re used to.

Or perhaps I should say this is what we can’t do, in light of how many of us adults cheerfully describe ourselves as hating math or lacking any aptitude for it. (Rather curiously, some of us then become agitated if our children aren’t taught the subject with the same traditional methods that failed us!) All of this has been noticed by people who make their living thinking about math education. Several documents for reforming the field, including, most notably, the standards disseminated by the National Council of Teachers of Is Monogamy Essay, Mathematics, have recommended that math classes revolve around making meaning rather than memorizing rules. Students should be encouraged to Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism, write and talk about their ideas, to understand the underlying concepts and essay, be able to put them into words. Missile Realism. There#8217;s a sharp contrast between math defined principally in terms of skills and math defined principally in terms of understanding. (The latter doesn’t exclude skills, of course; it just insists that skills should be offered in sparknotes shawshank a context and for a purpose.) But even a classroom centered on understanding may not be enough. Some traditionalists will agree that thinking should be “couched in terms of comprehending, integrating, and applying knowledge.” But in their classrooms, the student’s job is “comprehending how the Cuban Missile, teacher has integrated or applied the ideas . How Does. . . Essay About Cuban Missile Realism. and to sparknotes, reconstruct the teacher’s thinking on the next test.”[5] This returns us to about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, the fundamental question of characterization, whether understanding is about Crisis-Individual, Realism passively absorbed or actively constructed. The best classrooms not only are characterized by more thinking than remembering; they also have students doing much of the thinking. Thus, children, with the teacher’s support, may reinvent the idea of ratios for themselves, or recreate the marvelously consistent relation among the three sides of a right triangle (and discover its relevance to real-world design issues).

By weighing the possibilities, they come up with their own ways of finding solutions. What that means in practice is as straightforward as it is counterintuitive: Terrific teachers generally refrain from showing their classes how to solve problems. Rather than demonstrating the “correct” procedure for subtracting 37 from 82, for example, second-grade teachers might let the the Best Option? Essay, students (individually or in pairs) find ways to Essay Cuban Missile Realism, solve it, encouraging them to try various techniques, giving them ample time before calling them back together for a discussion so they can explain what they did, challenge each other’s answers (in a friendly, supportive way), ask questions, reconsider their own approaches, and travel fiction, figure out what works #8212; and why it works. Notice how different this process is from merely transmitting information to them in a way that would then be “reinforced” with drill and practice. Notice also that the learning depends to a large degree on the interaction among children; it doesn’t lend itself to about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, solitary efforts at the kitchen table. Until you’ve watched this kind of teaching, the idea of atticus finch characterization, trusting children to solve unfamiliar problems, or the about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, idea that math is essay about a creative enterprise involving invention, can be very hard to accept. Essay About Missile. It’s sometimes assumed that if an adult doesn’t immediately step in to say “That’s right” or “No, not quite,” children are being given the message that all answers are equally acceptable. In fact, exactly the opposite is true. About. It’s the fact that “82 minus 37” has only one right answer that makes this approach work. “Children will eventually get to the truth if they think and debate long enough because, in Cuban Crisis-Individual, [math], absolutely nothing is arbitrary,” says Constance Kamii, who has devoted her career to essay about mother, explaining – and proving #8212; the value of this sort of math education.[6] By contrast, when students are simply told the most efficient way of getting the about Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, answer, they get in mother the habit of looking to the adult, or the book, instead of thinking things through.

They become less autonomous, more dependent. Stuck in the middle of a problem, they’re less likely to try to figure out what makes sense to do next and Essay about Cuban Missile Realism, more likely to try to remember what they’re supposed to do next – that is, what behavioral response they’ve been taught to produce. Essay Mother. Lots of practice can help some students get better at remembering the Missile Realism, correct response, but not to get better at – or even accustomed to #8212; thinking. “In traditional math, says Kamii, “kids are given rules that don’t make sense to them, and repetition seems to be necessary to memorize rules kids don’t understand.” She generally recommends steering clear of homework, “partly because what kids do at school is enough, and repetition is neither necessary nor desirable,” and partly because when parents try to government regulate natural monopolies?, help their children with math assignments they tend to teach them what they’ve been told are the “correct” ways to solve problems. Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism. Again, this shuts down children’s thinking. Even when students do acquire an academic skill through practice (in any subject), the way they acquire it should give us pause in terms of how they’ll approach that topic in the future. As the psychologist Ellen Langer has shown, “When we drill ourselves in a certain skill so that it becomes second nature,” we may come to perform that skill “mindlessly.”[7] Practicing some things until you can practically do them in your sleep often interferes with flexibility and innovation. What can be done without thinking usually is done without thinking, and that may lock people into patterns and procedures that are less than ideal. Practice often leads to habit – which is, by definition, a mindless repetition of how does regulate, behavior #8212; but not to understanding. And when understanding is absent, the ability to use and apply the skill is about Missile Crisis-Individual, very limited indeed.

Even under those circumstances and for those topics where a reasonable case can be made that practicing does make sense, we’re not entitled to conclude that homework of this type is sparknotes shawshank redemption appropriate for most students in any given classroom. For starters, such assignments aren’t of Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, any use for those who don’t understand what they’re doing. “Perhaps the worst thing we can do is make [these children] do more of of world war 1, what [they] cannot do,” as child development experts Rheta DeVries and Lawrence Kohlberg once wrote.[8] Giving practice problems to students who lack understanding can have any of several effects: * It may make them feel stupid. (Over and over again, they’re reminded of what they can’t do.) * It may get them accustomed to doing things the wrong way, because what’s really “reinforced” are mistaken assumptions.[9] * It may teach them to fake it, perhaps by asking someone else for the correct answers, to conceal what they don’t know. * Finally, the whole exercise subtly teaches that math – or whatever subject they’re doing #8212; is something people aren’t expected to understand. At the same time, other students in the same class already have the skill down cold, so further practice for Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, them is a waste of time. You’ve got some kids, then, who don’t need the practice and travel fiction, other kids who can’t use it. Even if we were willing to put aside more basic concerns about Essay Cuban Missile Realism, this kind of assignment, it’s entirely possible that only a handful of students in any classroom at any given time would be likely to benefit from Is Monogamy the Best Option?, it. Thus, the nearly universal tendency to give the same assignment to everyone in the class, while understandable in light of Essay Cuban Missile, time constraints, is awfully hard to defend pedagogically. This is exactly why a New York math teacher, who has at various times taught students from second to eighth grade, told me that she has #8220;never found homework helpful. Those students who already knew how to do the stuff were bored with more of it at home. Those students who didn’t understand it made up their own ways to effects war 1, do things which were often wrong and repeated the practice, making it that much harder to get them to see it another way in class.#8221; An eighth-grade English teacher in southern California arrived at the same conclusion: I very rarely give my students any kind of Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual,, homework.

I do not believe in homework, especially in a Language Arts class. Many teachers say that they give the students homework for practice, which is atticus a wonderful concept. However, does every student in the class need the exact same amount of Essay Cuban Realism, practice? What about the student who has the concept down perfectly after the essay about mother, first item? Why does she have to Essay about Missile Realism, do the finch, other thirty-nine items? How about the student who practices all forty problems wrong? What good did the homework assignment do her?

I want my students to do their learning in my presence, so I can immediately correct them, or take them in a different direction, or push them further, or learn from them. Let’s assume for the moment that none of this was true – and that practice really could help most kids. Even so, it still hasn’t been shown that they need to do it at home. Proponents of homework simply assume that if practice is worthwhile, it must take place after school is over – in part because there’s not enough time for students to write or solve problems during the day. But this raises the question of what students should be doing. Often it’s assumed that the best use of class time is for students to listen to the teacher. Essay About Crisis-Individual,. Here we find another example of how questionable assumptions about education underlie a belief in the necessity of homework. Sparknotes Redemption. There is good reason to about Realism, move beyond the “transmission” model of finch characterization, learning – sometimes known as “sit ‘n git.” (The writer George Leonard once defined lecturing as the “best way to get information from teacher’s notebook to student’s notebook without touching the student’s mind.”) There’s a good case to Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, be made that if class time is limited, most of essay about, those hours are better spent having students read and write, discuss and Cuban Missile, reflect. Indeed, many assignments are most valuable when they’re completed in class, where immediate feedback is available. The Best Essay. Listen to the testimony of three teachers who address reading, writing, and math, respectively: In addition to reinforcement type worksheets which I do not assign for homework I also do not assign reading to be done at home.

Instead, I begin each day with an article (1-2 pages tops) that relates to the topics we#8217;re studying. Using just ten minutes a day, students end up reading over 100 college-level articles in the course of the year. Using class time enables us to go over the information collectively and about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, immediately. Sparknotes Shawshank. I have to Essay about Crisis-Individual,, give students time to write in class. I’ve never walked into an art class where students aren’t actually engaged in making art; imagine how silly art classes would become if the teacher expected students to atticus characterization, work on all of Essay about Cuban Missile, their projects at home alone, leaving class time for lectures or slides.

Of course we should expect students to write at Essay, home regularly. But assessment depends on Essay about Realism, observation, and if we do not allow students to write during class, we cannot observe their process or find the time to give them the mother, responses and ask the questions that matter. I like to see students thinking through math. I need to see what they are understanding and where they are confused so that I can guide them appropriately. This, I find, only works in class. The Learner’s Point of View. Even if practice homework really did help some students to acquire a skill, any such benefit would have to be balanced against Essay about Cuban Crisis-Individual, the effect it has on atticus characterization, their interest in Essay Missile Crisis-Individual, learning. If slogging through worksheets dampens their desire to read or think, surely that wouldn’t be worth an incremental improvement in skills.

But let’s take this a step further. Even if our only economic war 1, concern was with bottom-line academic achievement, it would be counterproductive to ignore how students felt about the process. Some adults seem to be convinced that kids ought to spend time doing what we regard as worthwhile regardless of Crisis-Individual, Realism, whether they find it unpleasant, but there’s actually little reason to believe that it’s productive to make them do so. This is because excellence tends to follow interest. As I mentioned earlier, advocates of homework are fond of Is Monogamy the Best, pointing out that you don’t get to Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, be proficient at activities like tennis or basketball without spending an awful lot of time practicing. But even here, what matters most is the about, fact that the would-be athlete wants to be out on the court. Practice is most likely to be useful for someone who has chosen to do it, and excitement about an Cuban Missile, activity is the best predictor of competence.

That’s why one of the main challenges for a teacher is to help spark and sustain children’s intrinsic motivation to play with words and numbers and Is Monogamy Option? Essay, ideas. Conversely, when an activity feels like drudgery, the Essay about Realism, quality of learning tends to suffer. The fact that so many children regard homework as something to finish as quickly as possible – or even as a significant source of stress[10] – helps to explain why there’s so little evidence that it offers any academic advantage even for those who obediently sit down and complete the tasks they’ve been assigned. That fact makes perfect sense in light of a fundamental insight that has emerged from the work of time travel, psychological theorists and researchers who have transcended behaviorism: What matters most is not a child’s action; it’s what underlies the action #8212; her needs, goals, and attitudes.[11] It’s not what she does that’s going to prove beneficial (or not) in the long run; it’s why she does it, what she was hoping to get out of about, it, whether it makes sense to her (and, if so, for what reason). Of course, it’s much harder to measure these things than a variable like #8220;time on how does government regulate natural monopolies?, task.#8221; By the same token, it’s easier to make students spend hours practicing a skill than it is to change their view of what they’re learning, how they see themselves in relation to that task, how competent they think they are, and so on. But that doesn’t alter the fact that the about Crisis-Individual, Realism, best predictor of atticus finch, results is how things appear from the Essay Cuban, student’s point of about mother, view. The failure to grasp the significance of Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, these complex, subjective issues comprises the most serious misunderstanding of all where learning is concerned.

Essays in favor of homework generally reflect a tendency to effects of world war 1, regard children as inert objects to be acted on: Make them practice and they’ll get better. My argument isn’t just that this viewpoint is disrespectful, or that it’s a residue of an about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, outdated stimulus-response psychology. I’m also suggesting it just doesn’t work. Children cannot be made to acquire skills. They aren’t vending machines such that we put in sparknotes shawshank more homework and get out Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, more learning. Even parents who object to the Best Option? Essay, homework on the basis of the about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, unpleasant interactions that take place may fail to appreciate how their children experience the homework itself – and how that reduces the fiction, chance that it will have the desired effect. Similarly, even researchers who consider students’ perspectives tend to do so in the context of Essay about Missile Realism, reporting that homework elicits considerable resistance, but only because those darn kids don’t understand that homework is good for them.

Our job, we’re led to understand, is to change how students look at things – or at least to convince them to essay mother, do what they’re told. Essay About Realism. But what if our goal was to mother, understand rather than to convince? What if we made a serious effort to imagine – from the child’s point of view #8212; what homework feels like and what it actually teaches? Do all those assignments really impress upon kids the importance of responsibility, achievement, and hard work? Or are their real messages that learning has to be unpleasant, that my parents and Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, teachers have formed an alliance against me, that I’m not trusted to how does monopolies?, decide what to do with my spare time? Perhaps we so rarely try to experience homework from the Essay about Realism, vantage point of those who have to about, do it because this exercise would end up revealing its futility.

I argued in Essay Realism chapter 2 that a careful review of the data really doesn’t provide much support for economic of world war 1, the idea that homework is Cuban necessary to help students learn better. If this seemed perplexing, it may be because we’ve just accepted claims about the value of spending more time on a task or the benefits of practicing a skill, or because we haven’t considered the tradition in educational psychology that demonstrates the significance of the student’s experience of what he’s doing. Misconceptions about learning are pervasive in essay mother all sorts of neighborhoods, and they’re held by parents and teachers alike. It’s these beliefs – even more than a lack of awareness of what studies have found – that make it so hard even to question the practice of about Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, assigning regular homework. You can lead people to the research results, show them that there are no data at finch characterization, all to support the value of giving homework to students in elementary school, and it won’t have any impact if they’re convinced that practice makes perfect and more time naturally produces more learning. Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism. If, in finch characterization other words, we assume homework is a necessary part of Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, education, that may be because of how little we know about how children actually become educated. To learn more about learning is to look at shawshank redemption, the assignments kids are required to do in a very different light. [Full citations appear in the book’s bibliography. Elsewhere, he wrote as follows: “The child who can promptly give the answer 12 to 7 + 5 has by no means demonstrated that he knows the combination. He does not ‘know’ the combination until he understands something of the reason why 7 and 5 is 12, until he can demonstrate to himself and to others that 7 and 5 is 12 … and until he can use the combination in finch an intelligent manner – in a word, until the combination possesses meaning for Cuban Crisis-Individual,, him” (Brownell 1928, p. Redemption. 198). 2. Putnam et al., p. 89. Lauren Resnick and other experts have made the same point. 3. In so doing, it also invites them to Essay about, think critically about those ideas.

By contrast, as the Brazilian educator Paolo Freire pointed out, “the more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them” — a pretty good summary of most homework — “the less they develop [a] critical consciousness” (p. 54). This raises the essay, interesting possibility that while a reluctance to ask provocative questions may help to perpetuate the institution of homework, the institution of homework may also discourage students from asking provocative questions. This is exactly what the eminent educator John Goodlad discovered in Essay Cuban Missile Realism his “Study of Schooling” across the U.S.: “A very large percentage of children [in elementary schools] reported to us that they frequently did not understand the directions for shawshank, the work they were to do. The consequence of this is that they did not get much done at school and Cuban Missile Realism, so had a good deal to do at home—but did not understand the work in the first place. In other words, if there was any reinforcement in the behavioristic sense, homework probably provided reinforcement of the the Best Essay, wrong way of figuring out a mathematics problem” (personal communication, November 2005). Essay About Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism. 10. All of this also applies to more sophisticated homework, by time travel the way. Even if the rationale is to promote “integration of skills” – a current buzzphrase #8212; rather than the mere rehearsal of those skills, the Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, reality is often that “the only skills being integrated are those of procrastination and panic” (Waldman).

Essay about The Realist Perspective of the Cuban Missile Crisis -- Powe

essay old times mp3 My Dad, a Brooklyn Dodgers fan from the start used to attend games in regularity with his Norwegian neighborhood friends, way in the back, high up in the stands, popping peanuts into Essay Missile, mouths that were busy shouting at the umpires and error happy ball players. Faces red in excitement, their bonds grew deep into the fierce closeness tied to such a classic American game. Essay About Mother? It took a scorching summer evening at a Philadelphia Phillies game for Essay about Crisis-Individual,, me to finally understand my father and his love for baseball. Essay Mother? Sweat receding as the sun set, I could not help but be drawn to such a fascinating game (for contrary to popular opinion, I found it quite engaging). However, the joy and progression of the baseball game was soon overshadowed by Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual, the suffocating commercialism and false countenance that filled the stadium. Glancing around I noticed the American stereotype in all it’s glory: Chase Utley jerseys so snug around big bellies, empty cups of steak flavored slushies strewn about, and atticus finch, somehow an overabundance of cell phone users discussing important business in the middle of the fourth inning. Dolefully, I was overwhelmed by such an Crisis-Individual, Realism, oblivion to the beautifully graceful sport that was being played there in the lights. It was then that a rebirth occurred in the understanding of my dad and his frustrating melancholy. I finally understood why; because baseball is simply not about fiction baseball anymore.

In fact, my father and I are not so far apart in our frustrations with the about Missile, world for when people ask me, “why are you not return to school in the fall?” I explain, how college is not about knowledge anymore. In America, most who have the economic means will send their child to college. These parents have worked hard to send their children off to school to essay about mother get a good education. They take pride in this (as did my parents) to see that their child increase his or her chances of entering into a monetary beneficial field, thus allowing their child a comfortable and capitally driven lifestyle. It’s the American dream is it not? These children, now young adults, choose a college they see to fit them and leave in the fall, pack their bags, their life that they know, and cram themselves into tiny rooms with a stranger. Life lessons abound in Cuban, these quarters, one begins to learn the art of sharing, giving up personal desires in order to respect another. They begin to learn themselves in these new environments and become significantly humbled in the new world they have entered.

New ideas, new perspectives fill these young adults and procure a glorious search for truth through discussion and reading, hands on experiences and sparknotes redemption, relationships. Somewhere along the $200 books, the specialized notebooks, and the hippest dorm organizers, this is lost. Soon facebook.com, late-night partying, ipods, cell phones are consuming one’s time as the classes begin. These eager young minds are soon living for the weekends, nights when they can lose themselves in Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, their inhibitions, shallowness prevails. Then morning comes, they rise, eyes groggy, headaches pounding and sparknotes shawshank, either head to Missile class completely miserable or sleep through instead. The truth is essay about mother, gone!

The drive and purpose behind heading to Essay Cuban Realism college is not nearly what it was years ago. Of course you have your exceptions, but for the most part, college has become a breeding ground of apathy, conformity, and time fiction, depression. Missile Crisis-Individual,? It is economic war 1, no more to learn, it is no more to better oneself with knowledge. Rather, it is to Essay about Crisis-Individual, Realism take the sparknotes, required courses, to get the four year degree, to about Realism get the job. For many this would be fine, but these are not the how does regulate natural monopolies?, people who would have attended college 25 years ago.

What does it do for individuals heading to college for knowledge alone? It creates a dangerously discouraging environment, for where intellect is supposed to be stimulated, it is Essay Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, actually doing the exact opposite. I cannot believe students pay so much money per year to be expected to do the minimum by atticus finch professors, to be given assignments that create more technological frustration then actual absorption of information or engagement of one’s mind. Such a deep part of so many desire to about Cuban Realism discover truth, to understand the world around, to create and connect, to wonder and push beyond what the usual mind set holds as correct. It took going to college for me to see this side of myself, others may have found it earlier, others later (some never). In order to time evoke any sort of long withstanding change in this world, a fairly extensive knowledge of our surroundings must be reached.

I am most certainly not alone. Find a college student standing idly around without a cell phone or ipod; ask him his or her opinion of the Essay about Cuban Realism, college life. I have a feeling you will receive an intense reviling not far from essay about mother my own. What has kept me sane the past two years and what keeps others sane for four years? Enough angst driven college students congregate and form relationships of about Cuban Missile Realism which knowledge can flourish, multiple professors have kept the how does government, spirit of learning alive as they lavish students with new ideas, writers, thinkers. But they are not the hub of the university anymore.

Instead, the Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism, centrifuge is the student activities, the atticus, football teams, the about Missile, fraternities, and shawshank redemption, community service organizations which look good on resumes. College is an Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, amusement park, in which we pay for our thrills, our fun built for us, entertainment provided. I ask in finch characterization, desperation, where are the Essay Cuban Missile Realism, thinkers of our time? It is the year 2007, and rarely are things in this American society about truth. It is the atticus characterization, false appearance, the deprecating facade that most of the American community becomes a slave. Aspects of genuineness steadily disappear! Photographs are taken in Essay about, order to Is Monogamy the Best Option? Essay exponentially increase one’s self image rather then catch moments teeming with such beauty and Realism, closeness. Relationships are created of suffocating shallowness that destroy a pure concept of loyalness. Fiction? In the search to Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism find the fast and easiest ways of life, there is a lack of process, a lack of journey.

Herein, at fiction, the end of our days, at the end of our experiences, we are nothing. We have learned nothing and Essay about Missile, the potential depth of our character has shrunk disastrously in the Best, size. This is Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, what is happening at colleges around the nation. Students spend four years absorbed in these pseudo worlds to be released and more lost then ever. I will leave college because I think in it’s true form, it is a beautiful and how does regulate natural, necessary endeavor. Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? I leave because I cannot stand to shawshank redemption be apart of Essay about Missile something so warped from it’s true purpose.

I leave because I, personally, do not understand what it truly means to learn. And so I depart. Passing the poster of the 1950 Brooklyn Dodger’s team on the family room wall, I smile that my Dad could have experienced a time when baseball was about baseball. I smile to myself, because for time travel fiction, the first time in the past 12 years of Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism public school, I will learn just for the pure joy of learning. Rick Perlstein’s critique of the American university establishment went great lengths to pull apart the increasingly homogenized fabric of our academic culture.

I believe he could have gone further. Having recently graduated from the “debaucherous” UC Berkeley, I was struck by Ronald Reagan’s depiction of the campus. His concerns couldn’t have been more shortsighted; in travel, reality, I would argue that UC Berkeley represents a startling trend evident in the elite universities of Essay about Cuban Missile this country. Contrary to Reagan’s claims, the campus is not licentious, but rather, is atticus characterization, growing increasingly conservative and homogenous. The university is no longer a bastion of liberalism and free-thinking, but an entity conforming to the same pressures it purports to resist, and the student body, faculty and academic freedom in general suffer.

From their undergraduate divisions, to the professional and graduate programs in law and business, academic institutions have developed a homogenized and increasingly standardized establishment that eliminates risk. Faculty members are motivated by tenured track positions that guarantee stability. Cuban Missile? Student research suffers, and the elite campuses become watered-down versions of their historic selves. Schools allow themselves to be bullied by a test-taking industry and ranking system metastasized at essay about, the elementary and high school level in the form of about Cuban “No Child Left Behind” and enforced by the powerful US News #038; World Report ranking systems. An April 2006 letter addressed to law school applicants and sparknotes redemption, signed by nearly all 192 ABA-accredited law schools complained that “ranking systems are inherently flawed because none of them can take (a student’s) special needs and circumstances into account.” They condemn the ranking process, yet employ the same ranking systems and homogenizing factors to eliminate law school candidates in the form of an absolute standardized test – the Essay Realism, LSAT. A more personal and creative admissions approach would negatively affect a school’s median LSAT score, dropping its ranking and thus, admissions numbers and funding. I have experienced the negative effects of such standardization, graduating from economic of world war 1 Berkeley in 2007 with a degree in Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, anthropology.

I maintained a 3.98 GPA, was a member of the Dean’s Honor’s list throughout my time at Cal and was admitted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. I was a preliminary finalist for the university’s most prestigious award, the University Medal, and was also a runner up for the Best Essay, the McCown Prize, awarded to the outstanding graduate of anthropology. Outside the classroom, I played inter-collegiate baseball at a top junior college program until injury forced an early retirement, refereed intra-mural sports at Crisis-Individual,, Cal, and volunteered my services to the Cal Women’s basketball team. I also worked in the community for the Best, the YMCA, directing an after-school sports program for at-risk youth and Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, coaching several youth baseball teams. I was not, however, admitted to a number of top law schools.

My standardized test scores, roughly in the eightieth percentile for how does natural, the LSAT, eliminated me, despite my academic successes at a top school in a top-ranked program. I was baffled when one Ivy League school explained, “our admitted applicants tend to have had a significantly greater degree of Essay about Crisis-Individual, involvement in Is Monogamy the Best Essay, extracurricular and community activities.” When the LSAT is the only measure of success, entire applications become distorted. As elite universities become homogenized, top students from around the country are marginalized. Like the lecturer looking for a recipe to Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism a tenured position, students subscribe to a template for success where grooming for test-taking begins in elementary school and internships and volunteerism are routine necessities, rather than personal commitments. Standardized test results outweigh four years of how does regulate natural monopolies? academic excellence, and generic service bereft of about Missile Crisis-Individual, passion supercedes creativity. The pluralism in the selection process leads not to creative and essay mother, unique individuals being admitted, but rather “diverse” versions of the same person. Universities have embraced clever ways of internalizing this trend, naturalizing their selection process through subtle controlling processes that allow them to Missile Crisis-Individual, uphold their “standards” for ranking and maintaining the status quo. The “celebration” of diversity on shawshank redemption campus has been hijacked by this ideology.

The University of California, for Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, example, while outwardly promoting diversity and freethinking, tacitly encourages quite the opposite. Universities abuse self-imposed divisions that represent microcosms of society at large where division is accepted, even promoted, and all the while, exploited by those with the means to do so. The membership of on-campus groups is disproportionately homogeneous and highly exclusive. Travel Fiction? Though the groups are theoretically open to all students, their memberships do not reflect such “diversity,” and are, in fact, racially exclusive and isolated. It is understandable why individuals would feel it necessary to about Cuban join groups of government natural monopolies? their own cultural background. New students, in Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism, their formative years at college, cannot help but be overwhelmed by the size and government, complexity of the university environment. Issues of identity are more overwhelming than ever in this setting, and race and religion act as common and comforting themes.

Berkeley professor, Jerry Sanders, likens this to about Realism “strategic essentialism,” the process whereby minority groups fear being swallowed by Is Monogamy Essay the majority and band themselves together, even if it means labeling themselves by a racial or religious identity. Individuals become comfortable in, what I term, the “cultural compound,” an arena where homogeneity and comfort in the group override underlying insecurities. This specialization makes groups unwilling to look beyond their own agenda, unite for a common cause and address greater issues, issues that concern more than just the survival of their group. In a broader context, the “cultural compound” that we see on campus has some dangerous parallels to the American society at Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, large. The university’s tolerance of de facto segregation only echoes a greater societal issue. Groups that isolate themselves along religious and ethnic lines are motivated by selfish issues and Option? Essay, are commonly unwilling to unite for Essay about Missile Realism, a national goal.

The Indian Student Association seeks to promote Indian culture on campus, while the economic effects of world, Asian Business Society looks to increase Asian representation in Essay Realism, the business school. Essay About? The Asian Political Association distributes a journal that appeals to Asian students, and the Berkeley Jewish Journal addresses issues concerning Jews and Israel. Their publications pertain to Essay exclusive groups, and while they have every right to sparknotes shawshank redemption do so, they isolate themselves under the guise of “diversity.” They do not display the strength, solidarity and unity of purpose that we would expect from a unified nation. When there is Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, a common uniting cause, small, formerly marginalized groups have the ability to band together, challenge large institutions and tackle major issues. Universities prosper in the current environment. They can firmly inculcate their conformist ideology with the creation of a homogenized student body. In divide and time fiction, conquer fashion, universities operate with corporate-esque management, standardizing their subjects in the most efficient manner.

In so doing, a student body that is Cuban Realism, apathetic and uncritical will emerge, an uncontroversial faculty is economic, born, and universities once heralded for their academic freedom and about Cuban, free-thinking ways will suffer. In response to monopolies? Rick Perlstein’s critique, I have observed universities becoming institutions of universal conformity at a time when we need plurality. They must break free of Essay their corporate bonds and embrace a doctrine of academic freedom that begins with multiplicity in admissions. A truly diverse student body can re-invigorate every important debate in this country. Sparknotes Shawshank? A homogenized university system cannot. College matters for so many different reasons. People say it is the Essay Cuban Missile, greatest time of our lives, when we will meet lifelong friends, find our true selves, and set sail to begin our journey into the real world. It is a time of tremendous emotional, mental, social, and educational growth.

The freedoms granted by American universities are unparalleled across the atticus finch, world. About Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? The phrase “going to college” belittles what truly occurs at thousands of campuses nationwide. While all the above reasons are all important and noteworthy, one reason trumps them all, education. The meaning of the word education needs addressing as it has become synonymous with the factual things we learn in our majors. Many of those who have never had the privilege of attending college unfortunately have this view of the time travel, word education. I too had this false impression as I first began college. It doesn’t matter who you are, you can memorize facts all day long and regurgitate them for a test. What does that prove? Eventually you will forget those things you knew like the back of your hand. Crisis-Individual,? As someone who is interning right now, I speak from experience in sparknotes, claiming you only use a fraction of Missile your education to perform your job.

Simply put there exists too many fields and specialties to be an expert in Is Monogamy the Best Essay, all of them. A mechanical engineer who is an expert in Essay about Missile, diesel fuel systems may not be able to tell you the first thing about an automatic transmission. The doctor who gained world recognition for open heart surgery is likely clueless when examining cancer cells. How many people can you say you know who excel in a job they had zero background in? On the job training accounts for a great deal of knowledge no matter what your degree. The Best Essay? Einstein once said that education is Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, what remains after you forget what you learned. So why then bother learning a specific field at all? The answer to this question lies with Einstein’s opinion about education. Natural? Education is that residue that remains with us the rest of our lives. Your education rounds you and lays the foundation for learning in the future. Essay About Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? To me, college has been a humbling and eye-opening experience to the vastness of knowledge that humankind has accumulated.

For instance, I can almost guarantee that someone who never attended college would say mathematics at present is a stagnant field. The Best Essay? Everything there ever was to discover has already been done hundreds of years ago by Europeans working under candlelight. Essay Realism? Taking several math classes for fiction, my major removed my myopic vision. Shear awe filled my mind when I realized that professors are active in Essay about Realism, mathematics research, still probing the foundations of reality. The feeling borders on the depressive side because you realize that you can never know everything.

Being exposed to some very bright professors has been a blessing. Just the presence of shawshank redemption some professors creates an atmosphere of intelligence that seems to diffuse all around them. A more specific example of appreciation for math occurred during class one day. I was taking a major course in numerical methods. To aid us in our methods we used Matlab; computer software that allowed for Crisis-Individual,, programming and many other tools. Our professor Amos Gilat could hardly contain his excitement as he explained the Gauss-Jordan method of pivoting rows in a matrix to solve systems of equations. Knowing that you could solve a system with a simple pre-programmed operation in Matlab I asked why we needed to learn about the pivoting, which consumed a great deal of time and was done by hand. Professor Gilat was dismayed and proceeded on a 5 minute tangent aimed at time travel fiction, proving that is precisely why we chose to attend a university and not a technical school. I then realized that 20 years from know when I have to solve a system of equations I will do it the about Missile, easy way, with a computer. But in the back of my head there will remain that appreciation for the men whose lives were devoted to the advancement of sparknotes shawshank their field. The road that has been my education in college has allowed me to Cuban Realism step outside my intellectual comfort zone.

As I anxiously walked to classes my first day I knew a great deal about history but couldn’t tell you the first thing about mechanical engineering. In hindsight I have gained so much satisfaction from pushing myself to start from scratch and take that foot off first base. In short, college has changed my perspective. I would challenge any high schooler that is debating attending college to how does government monopolies? attend for Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, that reason alone. Of all the things our country needs, one of Option? them is Essay Realism, a population whose perspective isn’t fixed in stone. In this era of economic effects war 1 record egotism and narcissism, we desperately need citizens who have an enlightened perspective of the world around them. I honestly believe that the first goal in learning is acceptance of ignorance.

The bigger the college the better, the further from home the better, and the more diverse the student body the Essay, better. Whatever you want to study, I urge you to pull up the anchor, set sail, and open your minds to the plethora of effects war 1 interesting people, places, and Essay about Missile Realism, ideas. Today, the college experience is more trade school, less ancient Greek academy. In our increasingly complex society, its constituents have to be better educated before they can become productive participants. This would suggest that the shawshank redemption, college education has become more critical than it has ever been before. Essay About Missile Realism? The college experience, being the manner in which the education is economic of world war 1, received, might be more telling with respect to college’s ultimate impact on society. Essay Realism? In his recent comment in the New Yorker, Louis Menand cited that: “The biggest undergraduate major by sparknotes redemption far in the United States today is. business.

Twenty-two percent of bachelor’s degrees are awarded in that field. Eight percent are awarded in education, five percent in the health professions. By contrast, fewer than four percent of college graduates major in English, and only two percent major in history. There are more bachelor’s degrees awarded every year in Parks, Recreation, Leisure, and Fitness Studies than in all foreign languages and Essay about Crisis-Individual,, literatures combined. The Carnegie Foundation for the. Advancement of Teaching, which classifies institutions of higher education, no.

longer uses the concept “liberal arts” in economic of world, making its distinctions. About Cuban Missile? This makes the obsession of some critics of American higher education with things like whether Shakespeare is being required of English majors beside the government regulate natural, point. The question isn’t what the English majors aren’t taking; the question is Essay about Missile Realism, what everyone else isn’t taking.” Mr. Perlstein’s bold forecast really is in the wrong tense. College as America. used to understand it is not coming, but has already come to an end. The real question is whether it is dead or just dormant.

The 1960’s and 70’s were witness to a unique combination of economic. prosperity that allowed children from families of modest means to attend college for the first time, and were still a time when being an English major was not looked down upon with derision (usually with respect to their relative employability upon graduation). Intellectual merit was still the common currency used in conversation. At the same time, it would be reasonable to argue that this inclusion of the middle class would reduce the level of intellectualism in college, because students coming from Is Monogamy the Best Option? Essay a modest background would identify more with the Essay Realism, necessity of sparknotes needing practical skills for entering the marketplace. About Cuban Missile Realism? However, one must acknowledge that from a financial perspective, attending college used to be less of a risk in terms of the skills acquired for. the debt accumulated. Students simply were not as worried about time leaving college with no prospects of paying the debts they had acquired with the degree they had chosen to pursue. Mr. Menand’s statistics make it perfectly clear that in today’s world, the Essay Realism, study of English, for example, is not a subject that is in economic effects of world, vogue.

Currency, it would seem, has replaced intellectual merit as the currency of choice on the contemporary campus. For reasons that perhaps only a historical perspective will make clear, students today have a completely different set of Essay Missile Realism values and priorities when it comes to education. Government Regulate? For some students, the Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, liberal education is ‘that irritating set of general requirements that one has to complete in order to graduate’. The Best? In 1999 the University of Chicago, famous for Cuban Crisis-Individual,, its ‘core. curriculum’ or required distribution of study through a wide variety of subjects, transitioned to making this required distribution smaller, in an attempt to make it more desirable to potential attendees. This attitude could be correlated with the rising cost of travel fiction higher education. College is expensive, and one way to Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism economize is to atticus finch characterization take as few classes outside of one’s major as possible. Many people speak of graduating early, in fewer than four years. This is Essay about Crisis-Individual,, a critical devaluation of atticus one of the fundamental aspects of the college experience: the education and about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, learning outside of time fiction what is strictly necessary. The impacts of this shift in undergraduate attitude about their college experience manifest themselves in the culture that they in turn help to define and create. When people refer to the golden age of Essay about Cuban Missile Greece, they are talking about the sparknotes shawshank redemption, period in time when great advances and achievements were made in the arts, philosophy (which at Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, that time included science), and governing theory.

This was a time when the resources and priorities of the fiction, Grecian society were focused on Cuban Realism those topics. Sparknotes? It must be noted that in Greece at this time, it was only free men that were allowed access to education. This exclusivity is in direct conflict with the attitude of openness and availability to education. that came about in the 1960’s. Today, we don’t admire the ancient Greeks for their methods, but rather for the cultural priorities they identified and extent to which they achieved and excelled in them. These are the very same subjects that are associated with the historical view of college and the college experience. Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism? The move away from this interest in sparknotes redemption, learning for the sake of learning in Essay about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, the undergraduate body is inextricably linked to this same interest in greater society, just as the undergraduate body attending college is inextricably linked to the society from sparknotes shawshank which it came and to which it will eventually return.

The question of the significance of the Essay about Missile Realism, college experience relative to essay mother our. generation then becomes one of deciding our cultural priorities and values. On one hand, there is education modelled with the Essay about Realism, intention of achieving goals in time fiction, the same spirit of the ancient Greek philosophers and statesmen. The other option is to Essay Realism treat the college experience as the period of time between high school and entering the workforce proper. For those of us who value what higher education and the college experience has historically represented, public complacency towards college is an alarming indication of how far in economic effects war 1, the opposite direction we have travelled, therefore making it paramount that the classical college experience needs to be revitalized, while maintaining the openness. and availability that was achieved in the 1960’s, as it is more critical than ever before.

A Solution to the Dissolution of College Life as Rick Perlstein Knew It. My younger brother is stumbling into that pivotal period when a kid applies to college. We’re a family of corn-fed, country folk from rural Illinois, and since my older brother goes to Loyola University Chicago and I go to Northwestern University, little Louis is Crisis-Individual,, scrutinizing The University of essay about Chicago. He’ll be in the final group of college aspirants to fill out the university’s quirky application that asks the applicant about a few of his favorite things. Next year the university, along with many others, will start accepting the Common Application. Louis told me he wrote about about Missile Realism David Byrne, David Lynch, and the value of the incomprehensible. “I would have written about Heidegger,” I said. “I thought I liked Heidegger when I was your age. Government Monopolies?? But that’s when I was young and stupid.” I paused, and reflected: “I’m not saying that you’re stupid, just because you’re 17.” I recognized that my brother’s experience, as a 17-year-old and as a college applicant, isn’t necessarily comparable to mine. That’s the difference between Rick Perlstein and me.

I’m aware that I’m looking at Louis’ application process through the Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, jaded beer goggles of a second-year college student. In his essay “What’s the fiction, Matter with College?” Perlstein observes modern college life though the rose colored glasses of a 38-year-old, but he either lacks the self-awareness to Essay Cuban Realism realize he’s doing it, or he doesn’t care because he is being paid to war 1 do it. There is a third, more benign possibility: It’s fun to reminisce. What grandparent doesn’t regale grandchildren with tales of Essay about Cuban Missile “the good old days,” when gas was thirty cents a gallon? The good old days aren’t the good old days except to redemption people who were there. The grandkids are usually bored stiff. I can’t get nostalgic for the version of college Perlstein describes, or for about Missile Crisis-Individual,, the visions of college perpetuated by TV and movies. Perlstein interviews some angsty college students and shawshank, some content ones. Both sets of about Cuban Crisis-Individual, kids disturb him. He recognizes in the former group frustration at sparknotes shawshank, the lack of creative and cultural stimuli and in the latter group an unhealthy enthusiasm for Essay about Missile, organization and career mongering. What do both have in common?

They’re running circles around campus. In my first year of college, I met those kids Perlstein describes. I met the essay about mother, types like his creative and frustrated Hamilton Morris, and the Caroline Ouwerkerk types who soak up all the organizational goodness available. The content ones spend weekends drinking at frat parties, and the frustrated ones spend time wondering if they would be more or less miserable drinking at a frat party rather than sitting in their four by six dorm room. I’d have to count myself as a disheartened Hamilton Morris. My first few weekends at Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, college were an agonizing Ferris wheel of impotency and frustration. Then one Friday night I made a resolution. Is Monogamy Essay? I resolved that I wouldn’t spend one more weekend on campus. I didn’t.

While exploring Chicago, I met a third group of students that Perlstein overlooks. Essay About Missile Realism? Maybe he ignores them because they didn’t exist in his college years; they’re invisible to 38-year-old eyes. They’re college kids who spend their Friday nights haunting Indie film theatres, or finding out how does government regulate natural which venues let a kid in to Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism a show with a friend’s sister’s out-of-state ID. These are kids who milk college for every opportunity there, and when college comes up short, they look somewhere else. They’re college kids who don’t haunt the shawshank redemption, campus. It could be true in olden times students had their cultural, educational, physical, and spiritual needs met on campus. It might have been a warm bath of vital stimulations for all I know.

His article makes it sound like a one-stop-shop of bliss. If the Japanese literature majors of today expect creativity and culture, they might have to take a bus to about Cuban Missile get it. Redemption? Perlstein says the gap between “college” and about Missile, “the real world” is closing. If this means the about, homeless guy who always rides the Purple Line at midnight is going to try to sell me his poetry, that’s fine by Essay about Crisis-Individual, Realism me. I thought student rights activists of the 60s and 70s wanted to free students from the time, protective bubble of their adolescence, not build a more glamorous one.

Why does college matter? I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m getting an education. I certainly didn’t get one in about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, high school. I didn’t know where else to turn. I’m training for my career, plodding down the yellow brick road to a degree that I faithfully believe will garner me some sort of effects credit in a “real world” I glimpse sometimes through the briefcases and wristwatches of the businessmen, or the beaten black pants of the Essay Missile, working poor I see when I’m downtown, away from campus. If Perlstein had asked me about my college experience, I would have told him that I am getting a fine education.

If America’s public school system has deteriorated as much as the press and Is Monogamy, politicians lead me to about Cuban believe, then a college education is more vital than ever. My university offers accredited teachers in how does government regulate natural, a variety of subjects and Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, plenty of fiction tools to help me start a career. It might be the generation gap speaking, but when Crispin Glover is in Chicago premiering his new movie, or Norman Mailer is downtown doing a book signing, I don’t expect the university to hold my hand. I can afford the train ticket. Perlstein seems to lament the push, starting with outrage over activism at Berkeley, to Cuban make universities “institutions of learning” at the expense of finer stuff..

Maybe it happened. Travel Fiction? But that doesn’t mean youth culture is dead. Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism? It means it shifted. Kids will have to look a little harder to Is Monogamy the Best Option? find it it won’t be a package deal. A college, as is Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism, any institution, is made of people. Should we be asking: “What’s the matter with college kids?” Perlstein’s essay lamented the loss of universities as a cultural and political force. If college students wanted the blissful bathtub that Perlstein describes, they’d join hands (and arms) to get it. Most undergrads are “Organization Kids” who can’t be happier. To the others, I offer two alternatives: If you can’t beat em, join em, or else get off campus. It’s true that if my 17-year-old self had to apply to the University of the Best Chicago next year, there is no way that the board of admissions would know about my Heidegger fascination.

Maybe they don’t care; maybe it doesn’t matter to them anymore what I’ll be doing on my Friday nights. Essay About Missile? I think I like it better that way. I’m responding to a position I can’t understand. It’s like asking someone with a flat screen TV to talk about time travel fiction cathode ray tubes. Not having attended University of Chicago with Perlstein, I can’t tell him if undergrads would have the Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, guts to try to arrange a concert with Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane. I can tell him that when Shankar came to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra last April, my peers and I coughed up $20 for nosebleed seats. About? Student tickets weren’t available. After only one semester at Washington University, it seems to about Cuban Missile Realism me that most college students–most of my peers–are much more apathetic than I had always imagined they would be. I grew up hearing that “children are the future,” and it made sense to me that the four years of college were when the children created and became the future. While this may have been true in another generation, it certainly doesn’t seem to be the case now.

There once was a time when the phrases “college student” and time travel fiction, “student activist” were closely linked. When you think about college students, you might remember the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. These college students sat down at lunch counters and about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, refused to leave until they were treated equally. They marched to economic effects war 1 Washington and Montgomery with Dr. King to gain rights for their parents, their children, and themselves.

When you think about college students, you might remember the Berkeley students who started the Free Speech movement. These college students wouldn’t allow their voices to be silenced. Many of them have their own children now, and many of their children are the about Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, college students of my generation. Effects Of World War 1? Now, their children are the about Realism, future. When history thinks about college students, will it remember college students from my generation? Probably not, because college students from my generation are too apathetic to finch exercise their right to vote, let alone their rights to speak freely or protest the government. Last semester, I was involved in about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, a massive voter registration effort on atticus campus.

We bombarded students with voter registration forms as they walked to about and from classes. We brought forms to classes and registered our friends. We even went door-to-door in dorms handing out forms and slipping them under closed doors. Every day I was shocked as dozens of my fellow students told me they were too busy to write down their name and address. They told me they were too busy to atticus finch characterization sign a piece of paper. They told me they were too busy to Essay about Cuban Missile Realism care about the future of their world.

When the world needed changing, you used to be able to how does government natural monopolies? look to college students to catalyze that change. But when the world needs change again, where will you find the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committees of today? Where will you find the new proponents of the Free Speech movements? Where will you find the next protestors against Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, an unjust war? I don’t think you will find them in the college students of monopolies? my generation anymore. We just don’t care. Beneath the Still Water Our Undercurrent Flows. A nippy answer to a particular question is always appealing. Cuban Missile? To the challenge what’s the matter with college, even Yoda could quickly convince you in a blink with one of his babblings: the nature of its current existence cloaks its presence . But excuse me master I’m from Missouri- I heard somewhere, there is always an easy answer to a tough question which often turns to be wrong. Would be this the case? Coins have two sides, but in describing just one, Mr.

Perlstein seems to get the Is Monogamy the Best, upper hand in Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, the prognosis of present college affairs. Essay About? A broader look on Essay Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism the casus belli is therefore desired. Recent undergraduate lifestyles seem to confirm the public belief that students are only being trained in sparknotes, slackology and beerology in college halls around the nation. But we all should put our sleeve’s aces on the table and describe both sides of the about Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, coin. Economic? Even if our actions seem to have decayed in recent decades, they didn’t from an effective point of view, just from a spotlighted one. Sorry, but it’s not our fault that the CNN #038; friends are not interested in us anymore because we have developed a refined savoir fair in what college agitations matters; it’s not our fault that we have become a bunch of sissies because our building takeovers are now ridiculously peaceful instead of Essay about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism riotously disruptive. Therefore, as if a past collective experience in failures would have been instilled upon us, our MOs have evolved, becoming less trade-marketable but still exacting a toll, and this time an effective one. Are you skeptical about that last point?

Oh well, just go and ask Galla udet’s deposed university president about what is economic of world war 1, it like to complain to deaf students who kick him out. And don’t forget the cherry on top, George Allen, the Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, hapless ex-senator from Virginia brought down by a wannabe freshman. Now, the sort of atticus characterization campus scandals that lead this country forty years ago have been integrated into the college system. About Crisis-Individual, Realism? That’s what makes them lose the media’s mojo and give the finch, false sensation of disappearance. An example are the Democratic Education at Cal classes at Berkeley, where the vile sexual orgies Ronnie complained against Essay Cuban Missile Pat Brown in the sixties now give you university credits instead. That’s how the undergraduates of our generation should be remembered: the finch, baby boomers’ cool Prometheuses. But wait, not all is about Missile Crisis-Individual,, going to be roses and wine in regulate natural, fancy grammar inspired by listening to Paris Hilton’s post-jail renaissance, of course. Our Nemeses have strong points against Missile Realism us which have to be carefully addressed.

As already mentioned, there is the popular belief flying over the cuckoo’s nest that we care more about American Idols and how does government, beer pongs, than sex, counter-culture and global problems. But look around first, our alibis are sowed everywhere like mines in a field. Paramount to the college equation has been the disappearance of the dreaded draft. Is it our fault that this nation’s fairness has increased and gone are the chances of getting arbitrarily killed in war? The absence of that hornets’ hive is Missile, something our past generations didn’t have the chance to sleep with, and even if there is a nasty war going on, that absence is the factor in sparknotes redemption, keeping everybody cool government and students alike. Yes, we are an over-privileged generation, but because everybody seems to want it that way. About Cuban Realism? With financial help striking us 24/7 and persuasive gadgetry constantly popping out, it’s difficult not to become spoiled. Even my French ex-roommate Marie, who is half estranged from her divorced father, lets him pay her cell phone bills! Yes, we should start saying just don’t do it, please . We are accused too of lacking that cultural extravaganza that flourished in sparknotes redemption, the halls of past generations. All in all, if Britney Spears and Bono don’t give free concerts in our restrooms it’s because we don’t dare to call them, not because the present singing styles have become so much spectacle and video-oriented that a performance in the dorms would be a little like an Einstein lecture in Cuban, Martha Stewart’s cooking sessions. Can we refute statements like colleges are no longer central?

Well, how would you define ‘centrality’? Would you say Silicon Valley is no longer central because microchips are also developed elsewhere? The key to centrality here is: Who is your daddy? That is, who is instrumental for accomplishing X? To that point, did Mr. Perlstein and his acolytes notice what new tool entrepreneurial college grads have deployed into the political arena? Right, calling it just political would be inaccurate. One would need to finch say, googolplex-faceted. I’m talking about You Tube. Ludicrous as it may sound, with the about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, Facebooks and cell phones wired to, students around the nation are now being empowered with a brand new way to create, say, pressure groups in matter of days or inflict righteous changes in politic campaigns. Beg to differ about sparknotes that?

Ask the aforementioned George Allen, the former republican senator who lost his re-election bid against a camcorder, after his private linguistic h eritage took off in public and got massively distributed over the Internet. Essay About Cuban Missile Realism? And do you recall Jean Rohe, the student who at The New School’s 2006 graduation ceremony admonished senator McCain for not representing the values of time travel fiction that university? Her remarks were posted online mere hours later! What undergraduate wildest dreams in the seventies would have imagined having such tools with potential to equalize TV and Missile, newspapers but from an independent perspective? We will see how these incidents are just the travel fiction, beginning in a long streak of Missile Realism future leading revelations. Politicians and legislators alike have started feeling our wired Damocles’ swords. Now, they are trying to get in our tune and about, be as cool as we are.

Do you need proof? You Tube just happened to interview the democratic presidential candidates mere months ago! Without a central college role, could all of the above been accomplished? Hardly. Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? Then why is that feeling that our generation is precisely accomplishing nothing and just downloading songs? Partly, because our actions have slightly shifted from travel fiction global to Essay about Realism local, and surprisingly, because we are actually busier than our parents were at their college age. According to how does natural a survey conducted by Arthur Levine, students are spending less time on campuses because 40 per cent of them attend part time jobs while taking classes. This means we have less time to mess around, but in spite of this, daring creative initiatives keep flourishing, like Sam Bell and the Genocide Intervention Network from Essay Missile Crisis-Individual, Swarthmore College trying to buy unmanned aerial vehicles to stop the about, genocide in about Cuban, Darfur.

Maybe our issues to fight for have lost that veil of idealism which attracted the attention of a nation long ago, but they have gained realism and time fiction, issue-oriented focus. If students working at a shelter for the homeless or tutoring troubled newcomers won’t make national headlines, it will surely bloom into more pragmatic results than just pursuing Let Freedom Ring ideals. Last but not least, campuses around the nation are finally fulfilling the diversity society seems to be asking for. That’s another silent lead. Our classes are filled with different races, ethnicities and backgrounds than anytime before. As a matter of fact, You Tube was created by a Taiwanese, a German and an American.

These are the leading qualities the ongoing generations are being provided by the genuine role of college as we used to understand it. Over-optimistic and self-complacent though they may sound, these are the signs of our time. The first time I ever heard about the SATs was when Zach Morris had to Crisis-Individual, Realism take them on ‘Saved By the Bell.’ The event came out of economic nowhere. Cuban Realism? There were no episodes of of world frantic cramming or practice tests; there was only Zach’s annoyance that he was stuck in school on a Saturday morning to take it. It’s a good thing I didn’t build my perception of the test from Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism that first impression, because as I would come to time travel fiction discover over the next few years, the SATs are a small slice of my generation’s neuroticism over college and Essay about Missile, ultimately, over our future. I work at the Plainsboro Public Library in Middlesex County, NJ.

It’s small by current standards, but it has what I believe to be a healthy patronage. Is Monogamy The Best Essay? In the five years that I have checked books out to my townspeople, the most popular selections (after movies of course) fall under a category I’ve privately called “future insurance.” Often, a child’s first exposure to that genre would be the Baby Einstein collection. Their departure from the stroller meant graduating up to What Your Preschooler Needs to Know. As they learned to read, they learned to recognize the children’s textbooks on Essay about Cuban Missile their special shelves. They also learned to grow accustomed to a twelve-month long school year, because it was during the summer months that they had to put up with their toughest teachers, their parents. But what always makes me sad is when those kids, alone and with their own library cards, walk up to essay about me and struggle to balance heavy SAT, AP, and high school textbooks to check out when they themselves have barely begun middle school. It’s a trend that caught me by surprise in junior high. My peers had already become immersed in about Crisis-Individual,, worry over college. They worked mercilessly for finch, perfect report cards.

They forced themselves to take timed SAT practice tests every weekend. They diligently built their resumes with mountains of community service hours, extra curricular activities, and leadership positions. And out of fear of Crisis-Individual, Realism being left behind, I joined them. By the time college applications were turned in, the damage had been done and, I fear, beyond repair. My generation has been groomed from infancy (and today’s children are far worse off) to prepare for college. To my friends and me, college was an how does government regulate natural, opportunity to increase our earning potential (I swear, we used those words). Preparation for it consisted of Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism investing in ourselves.

That is, investing in our capabilities and essay, sticking through with what paid off the most dividends. We did, of course, also dream of independence and free reign over our lives. Essay Cuban Missile? Sadly, none of us really stopped to think how wispy our lives have become. I’m referring to the digital age. Economic Effects Of World War 1? Cell phones, Internet, online banking, online shopping. Essay About Crisis-Individual, Realism? Today we can visit college campuses without leaving our rooms. They are a blessing. But then, they’re not quite so. In my first year of college I spoke with my mother and father at least two or three times everyday. In fact, on effects of world all-night study sessions, I used them as an extensive wake-up call that always succeeded when my alarms have failed. Facebook allows my high school friends and Essay about, I to stay in how does natural monopolies?, touch as if we had never separated.

I shop for my books, my music, and Essay Realism, my college paraphernalia from websites on my bookmark list one on Essay top of the other. It is Essay about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, wonderful and it is terrifying, because I ultimately have the entire world within a hand’s reach, yet with each week and month that passes, my world does not really grow. Sure, I read blogs from economic effects of world South Africa and listen to music from Essay about Missile Realism Japan, but I remain day after day in the same place. I do very little. And with one year of college on redemption which to look back, I’ve realized that I’m not alone in about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, this thinking.

My generation knows more than any that has come before it, but where we triumph in shawshank, knowledge, we fail in action. Essay Cuban Missile? In the time supposedly set aside for risks, adventure, and change, college does nothing to change what has become our nature. It would be very childish of me to blame this shortage of sparknotes redemption action on Essay about cell phones and the Internet, so I won’t. The bigger culprit is far more frightening than popular technology. The bigger culprit, I’m afraid, is our own apathy. For too long, my peers and I have focused our lives on getting into the college of about mother choice. Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,? Whatever private, secret dreams we had, ones for prosperity and success overshadowed them. And it is precisely this obsession with what jobs we’re going to have and how much money we’re going to make that has paralyzed our inner beatnik, the part of us most likely to jump on the stage and do something. We are held back from speaking out how does regulate monopolies? because, to put it frankly, we’re scared of having to explain our actions in our job interviews.

In the same way the words “liberal” and “feminism” have been tarnished and stripped of their power and goodness, so too have “protest”, “civil disobedience” and yes, “action” lost their significance and potential. We care more about the job, the Essay about Realism, high starting salary, and the luxury car more than we care about wars in the Middle East. It’s sad, but with the world we grew accustomed to and the goals that were firmly ingrained in our minds, are you really that surprised? A few years ago someone I deeply admired and looked up to told me she was arrested in a protest back in the ’60s. She was taken back by own surprise and astonishment. I now understand what she didn’t. My friends and I are not heartless kids: We donate on Facebook. We join Amnesty International and Darfur Awareness clubs.

We think and redemption, we feel and Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, we pity. But then we apologize. And we move on. We have midterms to the Best Option? study for. “For one human being to love another; that is perhaps the most difficult of our tasks; the Missile, ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.” -Rainer Maria Rilke. As a college student in today’s society, am I allowed to be a little skeptical about my generation? Am I allowed to wonder if we are all going to war 1 be okay when all the grownups of today are replaced by us? I have to wonder, will we finally be forced to be responsible and act like we care about what is Essay Cuban Realism, going on around the world and in this country? I can only imagine the scoffs and the eyes that are rolling as some people read this. How could I be so judgmental about my own generation?

We’re so different! We’re so great! We’re going to be just fine…right? I wish I had a little more faith in the people that I go to school with and those around the how does government regulate natural monopolies?, country that share my woes of trying to about complete an undergraduate degree. But part of me cannot bring myself to have this faith. Sure, we work hard: we get up, go to our classes, are involved in extra curricular activities, and work a part time or full time job to put ourselves through school. But who has the Is Monogamy the Best Option?, time for Essay Realism, news, for politics, for caring about a war and the constant infringement of the American people’s privacy that this government is signing bills to continue? Who honestly has the time, or better yet, who actually cares? For the small number of the Best Option? us that do, what is about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, going on essay right now in this society and in this world is scary, and action is needed. Some sort of Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, noise should be coming from college campuses where the ever so sweetly labeled “leaders of tomorrow” reside. But put your ear to the entrance of a college campus and the only thing you’ll hear are parties or nothing at atticus, all (evidence that students are studying).

I guess some of us just feel untouchable. That nothing will affect us, because lets be honest here…nothing has. Century to century, era to era, generation to generation, societal issues remain constant. Nothing new is happening but how we address it and embrace it has changed. The students that roamed the college campuses in the 60s and Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual,, 70s had a purpose. Things were different: there was a war waging that many thought should not be fought (wait, is effects, that happening now too, in Iraq?), equal rights for blacks, and Essay about Cuban Realism, women were already in the constitution but were not being practiced (isn’t the Supreme Court thinking about banning a woman’s right to choose?) things were just different. Or were they? The difference between then and now is not the institution itself, but rather the students attending and their life experiences. College is expensive now and essay, it seems that the government is Essay about Crisis-Individual, Realism, paying for government regulate monopolies?, less and less of it, therefore paying for school has become increasingly more difficult. Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,? The students of today are told that without an education they will go nowhere in life and how does government, that, in essence, without college almost all of their sentences will be followed with, “would you like fries with that?” We are frightened with ideas that we could be homeless, jobless and, without the ability to do anything without a college degree. Missile Realism? For the students of the 60s and 70s, things were different.

A good job didn’t require college; it enhanced the ability of the Best Option? Essay gaining a better paying job and Essay about Cuban Missile, allowed the the Best Essay, freedom of about Cuban Crisis-Individual, not going into the family business. Things were just different. Most of the students that went to economic effects of world war 1 college in those days were the wealthy, the inspired, or the extremely intelligent. Most of the time the college campuses of Essay Realism yesteryears were filled with students that wanted to be there, and that wanted to change the world they lived in. These days, college students want a way to economic effects of world war 1 make money, a way to have some stability in life, or are being forced by parents that want this kind of stability for their children. Essay About Cuban Crisis-Individual,? There are some that are inspired, there are even some that are extremely intelligent and there will always be those that are wealthy. Option? Essay? But let’s just say that these days a lot of kids go to college because it is what is Cuban Realism, expected, not because it is something that is mother, wanted.

What some of the students of today lack is passion, and about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, without this want to change the regulate natural, world, there aren’t many “movements” on about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism college campuses. In the past at Berkley, Stanford and at various other colleges there were students being beaten for their words, for their actions, for their standing up against the government. Today, we don’t really have that. Not many march and natural, gather for what they believe is Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, right and true. We never watched our parents fight or march or gather against a war or a proposed bill that they didn’t believe in. Our parents woke up, went to work and made money so that us kids could go to travel fiction school and have it easier. Our parents were fighters, but a different kind. So yes, college campuses may be different. College as was known to the people of the past is drifting away and breaking apart. But some of us on these campuses are trying to make a difference.

Clubs and about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, organizations on campuses are trying to inform the student body of what is going on finch characterization around the world and in our environment. We are trying to Crisis-Individual, open the eyes of the students on regulate natural campus but it is Essay about Crisis-Individual,, hard to inform a student body that doesn’t want to be informed. I have heard several of my peers state that they don’t worry about the future. The fear of no social security does not plague them. The fear of women not having the right to choose or countless amounts of time travel fiction soldiers going overseas to fight a war that seems never ending does not make them lose sleep. Missile Realism? These are the students that don’t want to know and don’t care to know about the genocide in Darfur and the bombings that occurred in Lebanon. Effects Of World War 1? What a surprise it will be for my generation when the problems of this world cannot be solved with as much ease as they believe. A friend of mine once said, “Why should I worry? The grownups are handling it.” I failed to mention to about Missile Crisis-Individual, her that one day, we would be the grownups and that we would have all of these responsibilities to deal with. As was brought out in the article “What’s the Matter with College?” by Rick Perlstein, the college campuses of the 60s and 70s and the students that populated them are long gone.

Now this society is stuck with us, my generation, that we can only hope will grow up sooner or later. Those of us that do worry about our society and time travel, about this world, might be those that help save it. Maybe we’ll be the journalists that inform the people (that by about Cuban Missile Realism that time will want to be in the know), or the environmentalists and scientists that will be working to better our world physically, or maybe my generation will produce the honest politicians that will work their hardest to better this world and this country. I guess the economic war 1, cliched phrase of “only time will tell” holds true here. Ben Franklin once described New Jersey, sandwiched between Philadelphia and about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, New York, as a barrel tapped at Is Monogamy Option? Essay, both ends. Essay About Realism? One might say the same about today’s college experience. On one side, high school kids, thanks to Advanced Placement courses, ambitious extracurriculars and economic of world, the Internet, have gained early access to many experiences once reserved for college students. On the other, employers and grad schools have encouraged students to pursue internships and gain “real world” experience far earlier than they used to. Indeed, the about Cuban Missile Realism, two ends of the barrel are now converging. Is Monogamy The Best? As Kay S. Hymowitz recently noted in The Wall Street Journal, resume-sensitive teenagers are trading the traditional summer pursuits of moving lawns and scooping ice cream for internships or study abroad. They’re planning for life after graduation before they’ve even started freshman orientation.

Rick Perlstein seems to think this double-tapping of college began sometime since 1992, when his “noisy and dissident” years at Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, the University of how does regulate monopolies? Chicago ended. In his account, the death of Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism college “as America used to understand it” coincided roughly with the essay about, birth, c. 2001, of David Brooks’ “organization kid.” In one sense, Perlstein’s right. The traits of the organization kid – working hard and Cuban Missile Realism, playing by the rules – have certainly spiked in economic of world, the past decade, and students today are more likely than their parents to Essay Cuban Missile treat college as another step along a career path, rather than a transformative or self-contained experience. But these changes have earlier origins than Perlstein suggests. The penetration of the real world into college life started in the ’60s and ’70s, the very period that Perlstein paints as the heyday of “real” college. We can start to government regulate natural monopolies? understand this by taking a look at college campuses – not just the people who study there, but the Essay about, buildings and quads themselves. Essay Mother? A campus is a college’s self-portrait, hashed out in Essay Missile Realism, stone, mortar and ivy. Is Monogamy? Princeton, from which I graduated in June, reflects this even more than most colleges. Its alma mater pays tribute neither to a time (like Yale’s “Bright College Years”) nor to a place (like Rutgers’ “On the Banks of the Old Raritan”) but to Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism a single building: Nassau Hall, or “Old Nassau.” The university takes its campus aesthetic so seriously that it recently demolished a set of serviceable but absurdly ugly modernist dorms, because they didn’t match the spires and gargoyles that a Princeton dorm “ought” to have. When Princeton built FitzRandolph Gateway in 1905, it made an how does natural monopolies?, implicit statement about the nature of education. The gate stands at the campus’s main entrance on Nassau Street, and from the beginning it was kept locked except for a few annual ceremonies.

It sent a clear message to passers-by: the university was physically and conceptually distinct from the outside world. That wouldn’t have surprised anyone at the time. The idea that college should be an intellectual “city state,” which Perlstein describes as typical of the 1960s, had been a tenet of higher education since the Essay Cuban, Middle Ages. The familiar campus quad – enclosed and inward-looking – dates from the fourteenth century. Effects Of World? Initially, this was partly a matter of security, a way of separating students from frequently antagonistic townspeople. If Ronald Reagan was bothered by Berkeley in 1966, he would have been horrified by Oxford in 1355, when an infamous town-gown riot left over 60 students and Missile Realism, 30 townspeople dead.

But the walls surrounding medieval colleges were about more than keeping students out of brawls. They reflected an essay, almost monastic vision of universities as places set apart. American colleges adopted this vision. It was shared even by Essay Cuban those professors who believed most strongly that college should prepare students for the “real world.” One of the effects of world, most public-minded academics was Woodrow Wilson, a professor and president of Princeton before he entered politics. Essay? In an 1896 speech, “Princeton in the Nation’s Service,” he insisted that the university would become great only by forming its students as good citizens. Yet it was during Wilson’s tenure as president that Princeton placed FitzRandolph Gateway at the main entrance to the campus. “Princeton in the nation’s service” meant preparing undergraduates for life beyond campus – a life students would only encounter after graduation. That changed in 1970. That year’s graduating class asked Princeton to bolt open FitzRandolph Gateway as a sign of unity between town and university. It was a promising and welcoming gesture in a university sometimes marred by atticus the wrong kind of exclusivity, but it also marked the beginning of the end of the campus as America used to understand it. For the first time, the university made its campus visibly and symbolically porous.

The idea that the outside world could enter into undergraduate life, or that undergraduates could enter the outside world, was not only tolerated but encouraged. In the decades since 1970, Wilson’s maxim of “Princeton in the nation’s service” – now expanded to “Princeton in the nation’s service and in Essay Missile, the service of all nations” – has undergone a radical change of meaning. The Twenty-Sixth Amendment, ratified in finch characterization, 1971, gave most college students the Missile, right to shawshank redemption vote – and about Cuban Missile, confirmed the growing push for undergraduates to become social and political actors. Today, civic-minded Princetonians are expected to enter public service not just as alumni but as students. “Service and civic engagement are integral parts of a liberal arts education,” Kiki Jamieson, director of Princeton’s Pace Center for characterization, civic engagement, told The Daily Princetonian. Administrators, professors and students have supported this idea through student-driven service projects, community-based courses and fellowships to fund public service internships. To many, progress means popping the “orange bubble” that isolates Princeton from the rest of the world. Civic engagement isn’t the only way in which students are pursuing their education beyond campus. Over the past decade, the about Crisis-Individual,, number of Princetonians studying abroad for a year or a semester has more than tripled, thanks in part to a world in which “globalization” has become a household word.

An increasing number of students and Is Monogamy the Best, administrators believe that a single college campus cannot educate a well-rounded student. This evidence seems to suggest that the Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual,, traditional idea of a campus is dead. Option?? But there’s a growing reaction in favor of a distinct, enclosed college experience. The place of civic engagement in a Princeton education has even become an issue in campus elections. When Leslie-Bernard Joseph ran for student government president in about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, 2004, he built his campaign around public service. “Joseph provides a vision of how does regulate monopolies? a Princeton where students are not just people, but citizens of their campus and the broader community, a place where students were engaged beyond campus from day one,” The Daily Princetonian wrote before the election. Essay About Crisis-Individual, Realism? That vision proved extraordinarily controversial.

Joseph won the election – by 11 votes. As the mother, election revealed, many Princetonians remain committed to about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism the traditional idea of college. It’s telling that after the university bolted open FitzRandolph Gateway, the shawshank, campus reacted with a new superstition: that students who exit campus through FitzRandolph won’t graduate with the rest of their class. Students at Princeton – and, in my experience, at other schools – still want a distinct college experience. They still want a gate. Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? But they’re still debating where that gate ought to be.

On Rick Pearlstein’s What’s the Matter with College. Rick Perlstein’s essay, What’s the Matter with College, states “College as America used to understand it is economic effects war 1, coming to and end.” More appropriately, he should have observed, College as many Americans have understood it is coming to an end. The world was a much different place for Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, college age “boomers” in about, the sixties than it is for about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, today’s college age students. Issues that dominated that era have all but become parodies of themselves in today’s world: Viet-Nam, woman’s liberation, civil rights, the atticus characterization, cold-war. Without college campuses acting as a megaphone to about Missile Realism political issues of the day, it is doubtful much of what was wrong with the world at that time would have become mainstream news for the nation. Essay About? Stand up and take notice, speak out, challenge the system, and about Cuban Missile, all the cries of essay mother social revolution that were born of that era have all but faded except in the memories of those who were there. Rightly so, however the lessons learned should not to be forgotten. Once upon a time, the about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, nation was at the edge of how does monopolies? its seat waiting to see if the changes called for by college campuses would be as monumental as the noise generated about them. New ideas interested everyone, those who agreed and Essay about Cuban Realism, disagreed alike.

Despite the fact it was believed to be corrupting our national mindset, our eyes were glued to the television; after all people were rioting, dying, and changing the world out essay about mother there. Sure changes were made as a result of the excitement rising from about Cuban Crisis-Individual, campuses at the time, but they came slowly over time travel the years that followed, and on most fronts there is still progress to be made. When is the last time a president looked out his window and Essay Crisis-Individual, Realism, said, wow, there sure a lot of people protesting, I’ll have to call off the war (or whichever issues are protested). Finch? It just does not work that way. Essay About Crisis-Individual, Realism? Only after so much tears and gas did people begin to realize that changes may better be made quietly from within. Perhaps the lessons learned from the Is Monogamy the Best Option? Essay, way things were done have prompted the modern collegiate to about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism conduct themselves differently. Perlstein notes, “The kids do have their own war now, but not much of an anti-war movement, much less building takeovers.” I think after watching an entire generation make so much noise for the Best Option?, so little political progress, college campuses began to loose their audience. I often observe “boomers” and about Missile Crisis-Individual,, their roles in today’s society and wonder if their younger selves would be proud of the people they became, have they stuck to time travel their convictions, and are the ideals they held as youth still relevant in today’s world? Why “boomers” aren’t conducting similar 60’s style protests about the men and Missile Realism, women dying in essay mother, Iraq.

Perhaps they’ve matured. Today, just as it was in the past, the college campus is Essay, dominated by a generation of youth, who however idealistic and well meaning in their intentions are simply (to the rest of the the Best Option? Essay, “real world” work-force) a bunch of kids with a lot of learning and growing up to do. Perhaps college campuses are not the Essay about Cuban Realism, center of attention these days; older generations looking back don’t what to be reminded of a time when they were as naive. They were in college when what college kids did was new and interesting, when their parents remembered college as only for the financially privileged. Once college was novel, raw, and it was something to look at, so a nation took notice.

Evolution may answer the question about why there is not much of an effects of world war 1, anti-war movement today. College has evolved significantly since the days of Governor Ronald Regan, and about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, President Kennedy. Once upon a time there was no other way for people to get a message across other than to stand up at the front of a large public building with a whole crowd of finch supporters cheering at the message being delivered. It was the about Crisis-Individual, Realism, only way people in one state could be sure others across the country could hear them. College campuses became that public place, and students eager to time protest the establishment (and those seduced by the band-wagon) were there to Essay Crisis-Individual, cheer. It was also inevitable that the entire nation would get the message because one did not have the choice of changing the channel to TV Land. All eyes were on the excitement, because Cronkite was just about the atticus finch characterization, only thing on TV at six O’clock. Perhaps today’s college population is a little older and wiser than that of their parents, they are not as eager to make a public spectacle of themselves, (unless you’re willing to drop in on their Facebooks), not as afraid to live in a world that has changed and is changing at the speed of technology; but that doesn’t mean there is nothing to look at either.

With roughly 20 million people attending college in America, I’d have to conclude that someone is paying attention to what’s going on. The internet puts campus life in the face of anyone capable of Essay about Missile Realism typing in sparknotes shawshank redemption, a browser address, and today’s political issues are in the laps of the American people almost as soon as they arise. Perhaps there is no longer a need to centrally turn our eyes on an institution that is as integrated, has made, and continues to Essay about Cuban make a viable impact on society. College for all of us “disappears” the day we graduate. Our sights, for the most part, fall on what must be done when the fun is over: survive, get a job, make our marks on the world, and hope we don’t fall into the dangerous habit of living in the past. Because every freshman class that comes up is effects of world war 1, going to change things just a little, until one day you go back to visit the old alma mater and find that white-boards are the Essay Missile Realism, new chalk, and travel fiction, no one is doing things the way you thought was right over twenty or thirty years ago. College today has an equally important role in society, even if campuses are not generating the front-page headlines of yesteryears. Above and beyond each attendee’s personal quest to graduate and land a good job, colleges are where cultural diversity, advances in medicine, technology, and about Crisis-Individual,, the arts are born. Essay? Without colleges ours would be a nation incapable of sustaining itself in the global theater. In today’s world, humans being what we are, survival of the fittest demands mental fitness of its members.

Colleges provide that edge for each person and in turn the nation as a whole. I see college as a necessary component of evolution, one that must evolve in itself if we are ever going to become something other than what we have been in the past. As a journalism student, we learn always to ask ourselves “who cares?” when writing a story. Having read three times Rick Perlstein’s “What’s the Matter with College?” I find myself asking that very question. About Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? In more than twice the space I have here, he bemoans how college – or his idea of college – has devolved since his days as a rebellious hipster. He does so by interviewing one former and four current college students, all from the same campus, whom appear largely unrepresentative of the more than 11 million young people enrolled at a U.S. college, according to 2005 census data. And he doesn’t connect their personal anecdotes to national statistics or a broader theme. Perlstein is too young to give my generation the, “when I was your age” speech. So what exactly is he trying to convey?

Something important, yes, but focusing so narrowly on his perspective of today’s college scene versus his recollection of his own succeeds only in soothing his penchant for nostalgia, while failing to reflect upon larger cultural trends. It is disingenuous to argue, “College as America used to understand it is coming to an end,” because college is just one part of a complex system, and about mother, changes to it indicate changes elsewhere. About Missile Crisis-Individual,? Indeed, America as we used to understand it is coming to an end. My generation – more precisely, my component of my generation – is very much the Me Generation. Time Travel Fiction? We are the willing victims of Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism America’s extravagant success. Our parents have given us everything their parents could never afford to give them: upper-middle class suburban stability. And thanks to the digital age in about mother, which we find ourselves, the once inconceivable instantaneousness and connectivity of everything is now all too easy to achieve – and quickly tire of. Higher education is the product of what goes into it. The 1960s saw a president, his brother and Essay about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, a civil rights leader shot dead; the threat, real and how does government regulate monopolies?, perceived, of nuclear annihilation; and Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, an army draft that compelled people to care about a faraway war with fuzzy motives. America was in crisis and so were its colleges.

Today, only some of America, the Have Nots, are in trouble. The Haves are doing just fine, and no one with the power to change that seems to care. The former has to confront guns and drugs and under-funded schools in their neighborhoods. The latter has the psychological and financial freedom to rail against Darfur and climate change and fair trade – matters morally and philosophically pressing, but nonetheless too distant to really rattle our bubble. Since it’s mostly the Haves who can afford college, it’s no wonder why the students Perlstein interviewed feel college is “a small town they’re eager to escape.” College today, particularly private institutions like the government regulate natural, University of Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism Chicago, are just transplanted suburbs. It’s the about, same kinds of kids and the same sorts of perspectives. And with more than 2 billion Chinese and Indians, many of them eager and English-speaking, waiting for us in the real world, that’s a very scary thought.

But our pampered egos aren’t entirely to blame. The market forces Perlstein refers to have taken over everywhere – just look how easy it is for Essay Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, Rupert Murdoch to hunt down wounded news organizations, or for airline companies to dump their pension responsibilities onto American taxpayers. I would love to chill with “special celebrity guest speakers,” as Perlstein fondly quotes Doug Mitchell as doing during his college years. Problem is, these days they all have agents and publicists and speaker’s fees. Last spring, I tried to woo a prominent journalist to speak at my campus. He put me in touch with the person “who handles my speech stuff.” Upon contacting him, he informed me his client would be happy to speak – for $16,000.

Everything has been monetized. War 1? And if something can’t make money, so the thinking goes, it’s not worth pursuing. Hence my generation’s drive to do a million things before and during college – a masochistic effort to produce that perfect resume that will bring that big salary (i.e., happiness). But for all those overly ambitious, over-organized, overscheduled overachievers (and I’m no less guilty of being one), there are just as many of the opposite, and just as many more trying hard but never quite getting ahead. Perlstein’s generation no doubt was the same, as has been every other before his and those to follow mine.

People, regardless of technology, economics and hype, don’t fall easily into the generalizations of their generation. “Students no longer lead the Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, culture,” Perlstein writes. Finch? Really? Last I checked, we not only lead the culture, we are the culture. It’s why the presidential candidates just had a YouTube debate; it’s why nearly every TV show, movie, material good and commercial for Essay Missile, those goods is conceived and Is Monogamy Option? Essay, marketed with us in mind; and it’s why the most prestigious newspaper in Essay about Cuban Crisis-Individual,, America made space for a PhD to probe what’s happening to college, then asked college students to respond.

Society is equally obsessed with and terrified of us. Good luck trying to figure out what makes us tick (whoever “us” actually is). College doesn’t exist in a vacuum; Perlstein seems to think it does. We can’t ask what’s the matter with college (if anything) without first figuring out what’s the matter with America. The country spent 12 years basking in the afterglow of the Cold War before being startled by the knowledge that other enemies still lurked out there. Now we’ve spent the last six years making matters worse. We live in an era of contradiction. Redemption? The world, as political philosopher Benjamin Barber argues, is simultaneously rallying around global markets and disintegrating from reactionary tribalism. Essay About Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism? Over there, stateless men, sustained by sparknotes shawshank nothing more than guns and Essay about Missile Crisis-Individual,, perverted religious fervor, are slapping around a sophisticated, $600 billion war machine.

Here at home, our national leaders tell us the most patriotic thing we can do is to of world do nothing but spend money we don’t have. Exactly when did America go from the can do country to Essay Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism the cannot country? At what point did America go from time travel fiction putting a man on Essay about the moon to being unable to keep the lights on in Baghdad, get water to the Superdome or build cleaner cars? Certainly we are no more corrupt (remember Nixon and Iran Contra?) but perhaps less competent, compassionate and, due to pronounced globalization, relevant. Perlstein argues college is supposed to run counter to everything else going on outside the campus. Redemption? Perhaps, in a way, it still is – just not how he would like it. With so much confusion and chaos; with the lines between the Essay Cuban Missile, good guys and the bad guys blurred, moving and sometimes not seen at all; and with questions that ask if any of it will even be around a century from now, college has evolved into a safe – if not sterile – reaction to uncertainty. It has become a place to economic of world foster linear, no-nonsense thinking as a means of self-preservation, in Essay about Cuban, hopes that one day we – my enigmatic generation – might be able to restore some sense of rationality to a very irrational world. For just a bit over fifty times what my father paid for tuition a few decades ago, I can attend the about, small liberal arts college of my choice. This is not my father’s college. Whether students are fiscally chained to Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism the arm of a parent or that of their loan officer, they are implicitly taught that college can provide you with the key to unlocking your shackles of dependency (the key being a high paying white collar job with 401k and full benefits, whatever that means).

Just a stepping stone, to time travel get the Essay, sheepskin; college is, what college gives. Often, my generation is baited with the newest cell phone, ipod, or gadget by atticus parents who know their own parents would scarcely have afforded them these indulgences. If it is about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, through guilt or bribery, I can’t be sure; what I do know is that each of these gifts integrates children into the world their parents have grown accustomed. Why should their children go through the finch, same rollercoaster experiences that they themselves took part in just to reach the Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, same conclusion? This, I truly believe, is the essay about mother, reason why college is just not the same. College students are advised by their elders to, “have fun, but not too much fun”. These same students have been molded by manic parents who stress over Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, their own child’s SATs or high school grades like results of a blood test. Shawshank? Still more, many are shuttled around like weary tourists in minivans on Missile Realism to their next extracurricular or sport practice. We have been molded into shawshank redemption, our parents’ image or into who they want us to be, and those who fail to about acknowledge this duress have likely found college to be an Is Monogamy Option? Essay, expendable luxury, either due to price or motivation. Most of the hippies and activists of 1960s lore have long ago hung up their picket signs and extremist ideals for the gray suit of capitalistic pragmatism. They expect their offspring to precociously do the same.

College is not the place of sit-ins and protests, it is the home of future doctors, lawyers, artists, and patrons of the arts, studiously working and obeying. Rebellion in our culture has transformed from all-out life changing experiences during one’s college years into a haphazard array of begging and arguing with one’s parents over petty teenage disputes. Essay About Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,? The world-changing aspirations of those baby-booming collegiates has shriveled into a “me first” rock climb up America’s crumbling middle class. Now some students will say that they volunteer at their local soup kitchen or have cleaned up their county stream, but try asking them if they would have sacrificed their education to pursue these lofty goals….a moment’s hesitation, and time, then a, “probably not”. The real question is whether our modern college phenomenon is a desirable outcome.

Many proclaim that we do not fully experience college and Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, Realism, can not expect to comprehend the awesome power that can blossom from travel fiction seemingly quiet academia. My answer to skeptics of our new campus conformity with mainstream America is that we rely on our parents for so much, (guidance, fiscal help, even room and board after we have finished crossing our stepping stone) that we need not experience such extremes to understand and appreciate them. At Brandeis University, a whole class was dedicated to the 1960’s and from what I’ve heard (It didn’t interest me enough to enroll) it was excellent. The American way is to take something and make it better. Essay About Cuban Missile Realism? We’ve done it to the automobile and the personal computer; now, we’ve done it to our institutions of higher learning. Mother? Today, college matters for a different, but equally important, reason than the college of my parents: learning from the past to further our futures, instead of reliving a past of unbridled idealism. On the day when I first visited my college as an admitted student, I stood with hundreds of my future classmates as our new dean rose to make a speech.

We were fresh off the assembly line of Essay about Cuban Missile Realism high school; we had taken our SATs and our ACTs and economic effects of world, our advanced placement tests; we had achieved that elusive grail, admission to Essay about a hyper-competitive university. I’m sure many of about us were beginning to feel supremely self-satisfied when the dean began to tell us a bit about who, as he said, our new classmates were. The specifics of the speech change from year to year, and I have forgotten the precise details of the one addressed to me. Still, its gist remains unmistakably the same. In our class, the dean was saying, was a biology student who had managed to discover two new genes at the age of 16, all the while toiling in a makeshift lab at the risk of punishment from her country’s repressive political regime. We had a playwright whose work had already been performed by a troupe of professional actors. We had a human rights activist who had smuggled vaccinations across borders on his summer vacations.

We would soon meet a budding author who had published his shorter fiction in The New Yorker, and whose first novel had just been optioned for a movie. In the past, college was a time of individual growth achieved through the momentum of the Essay Realism, collective. Rick Perlstein says as much when describing Doug Mitchell, his acquaintance whose college years during the early ’60s had been filled with banned books, new music and the Best Option?, incendiary politics. Despite the personal initiative he took to engage with the world around him, Mitchell’s intellectual exploration was anything but isolated. About Cuban Missile? Students “would argue night and atticus finch, day in the lounge!” he told Perlstein. The interaction of minds outside an unstructured setting was more vital than what went on in the classroom. To simply be a student was to join a movement; whether you liked it or not, whether you wore a crew cut or let your hair hang long, you stood for something. When members of about Cuban Missile my parents’ generation express their discontent with the current breed of college student, they speak with longing for this lost group mentality.

College students today are self-absorbed and grade-obsessed, they tell us, too busy at their desks to look up and engage with the greater world. Many of us oppose the war, but won’t so much as lift a finger off the computer keyboard to protest. As Perlstein diagnoses it, we no longer challenge the nation with calls to conscience. He characterizes the atticus, problem as a dramatic break with the attitudes of Essay Missile past college students, a break that he finds essentially inexplicable. What may be closer to the truth, however, is not that today’s students are ignoring the characterization, precedent set by Crisis-Individual, students from the golden age of American education, but that we are in fact following it, and essay about mother, its message of empowered youth, too literally. We’re adapting earlier models of personal achievement in order to fit in with a world defined by the adult lives and accomplishments of past students who have grown up, and the results may cripple our ability to collectively influence society over a long period of time. If the speech my dean made to our incoming freshman class serves as any indicator, bright and Essay about, able college students are not turning away from collective action because we are apathetic or uncreative– explanations that some of Perlstein’s interviewees suggest. Instead, we are turning away from collective action in favor of high individual achievement. The scientist, the playwright, the activist, the novelist: each has achieved extraordinary things before ever setting foot on a college campus, and in government monopolies?, doing so, each has marked himself as exceptional. The pressure to achieve the unthinkable at Cuban Missile, a dramatically young age is a much-discussed aspect of America’s youth culture, and is often bewildering to older generations whose parents put far less pressure on about them than their children now put on themselves. In fact, the trend dates back to the profound changes in college admissions procedures in the ’60s, when colleges began to rely less on tradition and more on Essay about Crisis-Individual, Realism students’ accomplishments as criteria for admission.

In our own age, when educational meritocracy is reaching such peaks that high school students become desperate to separate themselves from the pack of their fellow applicants, exceptionality is all the rage. Eventual success through discovery and time, pursuit of passions–the kind of essential college experience that Perlstein looks back on with such fondness–just isn’t cutting it these days. It’s that initial burst of spectacular achievement at a young age that seems to separate those worthy of Essay admission to a prestigious college from everyone else. By the time these students enter college, the model of competition through individual accomplishment has been set. What you do on campus eclipses what, and how, you think. This mentality is not so opposed to that of the ’60s students, who also believed passionately in the power of young people to natural act upon their world, albeit in a more political sense. But while those students thought they were following the model of the Romantics, who were happy to succumb to the blaze of youthful accomplishment, the achievers of Essay Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism our generation are more savvy. We look to those former college students, who have now inherited the sparknotes shawshank redemption, establishment they so opposed, for models of professional success. The fantasy for today’s enterprising college students is not to give everything we have at once, but to Missile Realism start achieving young and sustain fabulous success indefinitely. The problem with this focus on sparknotes redemption early and extraordinary achievement is that it does not set a precedent for future success so much as split the best minds of about current college students into two groups, with the members of the sparknotes shawshank redemption, one continuously scrambling to surpass their early accomplishments while those in the other anxiously search for Missile, their own influential niche. The insatiable drive to prove oneself not merely excellent but surpassingly exceptional at sparknotes redemption, something–anything –may be the Cuban Crisis-Individual,, trap of our generation.

Take, for example, one dissatisfied University of Chicago student from Perlstein’s article, who, during high school, was “a filmmaker, painter, photographer, [and] an experienced professional standup comedian.” His experience at college has been one of disappointment with other students, who, he said, ” ‘had to spend their entire high school experience studying for Is Monogamy the Best Option?, the SATs or something and didn’t really get a chance to live life or experience things.’ ” When students begin to critique and reject their peers for not accomplishing enough before they have had any opportunity to even try, we create a college culture of internal and fruitless competition to prove that we have already surpassed each other. The more vital question that too often goes ignored is what we hope to achieve and about Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, why, not what we have already done. If college is to continue to matter, we should reject the idea that being a student is an economic effects war 1, opportunity that comes only Essay Missile Realism, once in a lifetime, or, worse, that influencing and engaging with the Is Monogamy Essay, world can only happen through a particular kind of activism, during a particular four-year stretch of Essay Cuban Crisis-Individual, time, which peaked some decades ago. We should reject the current idea that being a student means achieving the goals of a lifetime all at once. And we should be skeptical of comparisons to regulate past generations of students, who, we are told, were more passionate than we are and had more impact earlier in life than we do now. College matters because it teaches us students how we will want to matter in the world, even if our moment doesn’t come right away. After all, we have the rest of our lives. Fruity Pebbles and Diet Coke (Why College Matters) Rick Perlstein’s article “What’s the Matter with College” pissed me off. It really pissed me off. It pissed me off because I found it particularly condescending.

It pissed me off because I disagreed with its thesis and everything it was trying to prove. Essay About Realism? But mostly it pissed me off because I wasn’t in time, it. God, that’s so typical of kids today, isn’t it? It’s not about me, I can’t relate to it, I don’t care. But as I sat in Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, my bedroom in Middletown, Maryland around midnight with my laptop burning a hole through my sweatpants, my head propped up by sparknotes a fuzzy acrylic maroon pillow no respectable adult would have in her house, and my stuffed dog Sergeant Pepper’s head shoved carelessly under my right thigh, I read that article as a college student, and I wasn’t in it, and it really pissed me off. I am a college student. I have the mini fridge and the bookstore t-shirts to prove it.

Unlike a student example in Perlstein’s article, however, I didn’t go to one of Crisis-Individual, those artsy my-parents-can-afford-this-place high schools where I was allowed to perform Shakespeare or Mozart concertos all day. I would have loved to be in a place like that. No; I went to Middletown High School in Middletown, Maryland where, instead, I had to take four years of math, and four years of history, and four years of I don’t give a damn about anything this class has to teach me and I should be writing 500 great American novels instead of how does government regulate learning about theorems, but I don’t want to grow up to be an uneducated vagrant who sells hemp jewelry and photos of flowers she developed at about Realism, Wal-Mart when she realizes she didn’t make it in Hollywood and publishers aren’t exactly breaking down her door. And that’s how it happened. That’s how it happened for me, and that’s how it happens for other kids like me, past and present, of Middletown High, and that’s how it will continue to atticus finch characterization happen in Essay about Cuban Missile Realism, Middletown until somebody tells the school system they’ve been doing it wrong, and it will then take at least 25 years to actually change (In which case they will not refund four years of college tuition and the $100 I spent on a graphing calculator which, since high school graduation, I’ve only used to balance my checkbook and calculate roughly how much alcohol I can consume in a power hour before dying).

Unlike a student example, I’m not into community service. Essay About Mother? So sue me. It’s not my thing. I’m not a double major. Cuban Crisis-Individual,? I could have been, but I’m not. And sometimes on Saturdays I watch “Love Actually” three times with my roommate while nursing a hangover and knowing the library is open late Sunday nights.

I am a creative person. I’m sorry if I’m not creative enough to how does government regulate natural monopolies? be featured in Perlstein’s article, but I did spend high school worrying about my SAT scores. Because I didn’t want to end up at a school that wasn’t good enough for me, that didn’t give me what I need to be the about Cuban Realism, creative person I know I am, and atticus characterization, I know I can be. I am experiencing things. Hundreds of things I never could have experienced in Middletown, Maryland, because that’s where my parents chose to live, and that’s where my parents chose for about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual,, me to go to school, and if you have a problem with my parents’ parenting skills, take that up with them. “I asked whether incentivizing science according to its marketability might distort the university’s mission to nurture ideas on the basis of intellectual merit, regardless of commercial potential.” I do not understand this question.

In fact, I stopped reading it half-way through. I am an finch, intelligent person, and Essay Missile Crisis-Individual,, I know that. I don’t need anybody to effects tell me, and I don’t let upholding that status dictate how I speak and Cuban Missile Realism, act and socialize 100 percent of the time. I don’t know what America should do about Iraq. And I’m not going to pretend I do. Because nobody in politics cares what a 19-year-old drama major from Washington College has to say about Iraq. And nobody has to. And, guess what? I love college. I don’t love everything about it (certain members of the administration, forgive me, can kiss my ass), but I love college, and I love what I’m learning about myself, other people, and how to start working and living in the world.

I’m away from home. I don’t even care where I am; I’m away from home. I can finally see that, in a few years, it will be okay that I’m living on my own; I’m not going to end up homeless because I didn’t understand that rent and shawshank, utilities might be a bit more important than a day in the Banana Republic; I won’t die of malnutrition after eating nothing but Fruity Pebbles and Missile Realism, Diet Coke for a year and a half; I’m not going to let used car salesmen and corporate assholes take advantage of me (unless they offer me a free day in the Banana Republic). I’m finally taking classes for what I’ve wanted to learn since I saw my first movie and read my first book. Essay About? And, sure, I’m still taking courses in subjects I might not have signed up for if I’d had the option of taking another acting class instead, but I’m still choosing them, which at least allows me to believe I’m still in control. I’m staying up past midnight in my dorm’s lounge, blasting show tunes with six of my closest friends and my boyfriend, and talking about drama, or economics, or religion, or Iraq if I want to, even if I have no damn authority to be talking about any of it in the first place; just because I’m in Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, college, and it’s okay for me to do that. It’s okay for sparknotes shawshank, me to talk complete nonsense, and Essay Missile, it’s okay for me to talk about anything so ridiculous or far-fetched that several of my friends want to slap me and each other by economic the end of the night.

And maybe one day I’ll be in a position where I can use what I learned in Essay about Cuban Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, my classes and in mother, my dorm lounge to totally reform the economy and bring the national debt down to a dollar or so, which I like to keep around because, hey, nobody’s perfect. It’s okay because it’s 1 a.m., I’m surrounded by people on my intellectual and about Realism, creative level, and government monopolies?, I know that tomorrow I’ll have to go to work, call my mother, buy toothpaste, grab an elliptical at the gym before the sorority girls all beat me to them, and Missile Crisis-Individual, Realism, try to sit through a distribution lecture class without drooling on my cell phone because I’ve been taking pictures of the room with it for the last half hour and I fell asleep with my face pressed against atticus finch characterization it on Essay about Cuban my desk. And who the hell is some person I’ve never heard of, or even some person I have, to say any of that doesn’t matter? In July, The Magazine published What's the Matter With College, an essay by the historian Rick Perlstein, online and invited college students across the United States to respond. Some 600 undergraduates did -- many agreeing with Perlstein's assertion that college as America used to understand it is coming to an end, many dismissing his argument as so much nostalgic pap, still others taking the occasion to sparknotes critique higher education from an insider's perch. To continue the conversation, we're featuring the winning student essay and four runners-up, and posting another 450 of the entries in a searchable format. (The other entries were withdrawn by their authors or did not follow the contest's rules.)
