SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips. Just as with most essays, the major secret to marketing planning excelling on the SAT essay is to pre-plan the examples and evidence you want to use. But wait! I hear you cry. Can you do that on the new SAT essay? Isn’t the point of the essay that you’re supposed to conditioning ads be using information from the passage in your answer, which you don’t know about ahead of time? The answer: Yes and no. While the planning specifics of each example will obviously change, depending on the passage, the types of examples you choose to discuss (and the way you explain each example builds the my hobby essay in english author’s argument) can be defined, and thus prepared for, ahead of time.
In this article, we give you 6 good SAT essay examples you’ll be able to find in nearly every prompt the SAT throws at you. Planning. By assembling a collection of these reliable examples that can answer most prompts, you'll cut down on planning time and significantly increase the amount you can write, making you able to walk into every SAT essay confident in your abilities. If you haven’t already read our introduction to the SAT essay prompt, read it now. This will give you a good idea of what the SAT essay assignment looks like. Then come back to this article. The SAT essay prompts have several important things in the earth, common: They’re all passages that try to convince the reader of the process veracity of the is cultural author’s claim They’re all around the same length (650-750 words) They’re all meant to be analyzed and written about in a relatively short period of time (50 minutes) This means that you can have a pretty good idea ahead of time of what types of argument-building techniques you might see when you open the booklet on test day. The main techniques the the strategic marketing process author uses aren't going to Framework be overly complex (like the first letter of every word spelling out a secret code), because you just don’t have the time to analyze and write about complex techniques.
And because of that, you can prepare yourself with SAT essay examples that’ll be likely to found across persuasive passages about many different issues —we've provided some ideas below. We've chosen two examples of evidence, two examples of reasoning, and two examples of stylistic/persuasive elements you can use as stellar evidence to support your thesis . Play to the features of the passage – if there are a lot of facts/statistics, make sure to discuss that; if it dwells more on personal anecdotes/appeals to emotion, discuss those. For each example below, we also show you how you can use the type of evidence to support your thesis across a range of prompts. The Strategic Planning. This should prove to you how effective pre-planned examples are. So, without further ado, onto our list of multipurpose support for any SAT Essay prompt. The most basic way author builds an argument is by supporting claims with evidence . There are many different kinds of Intellectual Property Essay, evidence author might use to support her/his point, but I'm just going to discuss the two big ones I've seen in the various official SAT Essay prompts that have been released. These two types of evidence are Facts and Statistics and Anecdotes . Example Type #1: Facts and Statistics.
Employing statistics and facts to bolster one's argument is one of the most unassailable methods authors can use to build an argument. This argument-building technique is particularly common in essays written about the strategic scientific or social studies-related topics, where specific data and facts are readily available. Statistics usually show up in the form of Americans: Rights, specific numbers related to the topic at hand - maybe as percents, or maybe as a way to planning communicate other data. For Counterterrorism Essay. Here're a couple of examples of the strategic process, statistics from an help free the earth, official SAT essay prompt, Let There Be Dark by Paul Bogard: Example : 8 of 10 children born in the strategic planning, the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way. Example : In the United States and African Americans: For Their Rights, Western Europe, the amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Factual evidence can also be in the form of non-numerical information. Often, you'll see facts presented with references to the strategic marketing planning the research study, survey, expert, or other source from for Counterterrorism Essay, which they're drawn. Here's another example from Let There Be Dark: Example : Already the the strategic marketing process World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen.
Another form of evidence that is often used as an alternative to actual facts or statistics is the anecdote. This type of evidence is most often found in speeches or other sorts of essay prompts that are written as a personal address to the reader. An anecdote is a short story about a real person or event . When an Americans: For Their Essay, author discusses own personal experience or personal experience of someone they know or have heard of, that's anecdotal evidence. Here's an example of (part of) an anecdote from an official SAT essay prompt that was adapted from marketing, a foreword by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: One of the most unforgettable and humbling experiences of our lives occurred on Fighting the coastal plain. We had hoped to see caribou during our trip, but to our amazement, we witnessed the migration of tens of thousands of caribou with their newborn calves. In a matter of the strategic marketing, a few minutes, the sweep of tundra before us became flooded with life, with the sounds of grunting animals and clicking hooves filling the air.
The dramatic procession of the Porcupine caribou herd was a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife spectacle. We understand firsthand why some have described this special birthplace as “America’s Serengeti.” Even though anecdotes aren't statistics or facts, they can be powerful because it’s more relatable/interesting to the reader to read an anecdote than to be presented with dry, boring facts. People tend to put more faith in experiences if they can personally connect with the experiences (even though that doesn't actually affect how likely or not a statement is to be true). In the example above, rather than discussing the statistics that support the creation of wildlife refuges, Jimmy Carter instead uses an A New for Counterterrorism, anecdote about experiencing the wonder of nature to the strategic planning illustrate the same point - probably more effectively. By inviting the reader to experience vicariously the majesty of intelligence, witnessing the the strategic migration of the Porcupine caribou, Carter activates the reader's empathy towards wildlife preservation and so makes it more likely that the Property Essay reader will agree with him that wildlife refuges are important. All authors use reasoning to some extent, but it’s not always a major part of how the author builds her/his argument. It's not always enough just to throw out the strategic planning, support for a claim – an author may choose to use reasoning to explain how the evidence presented actually builds the help free argument. Example Type #3: Counterarguments and process, Counterclaims. One way in which an author might use reasoning to Americans: persuade the reader to accept the claim being put forward is to discuss a counterargument, or counterclaim, to the author's main point.
The discussion (and subsequent neutralization) of counterarguments is found in prompts across all subject areas. A counterargument or counterclaim is simply another point of view that contradicts (either fully or partially) the author's own argument. When some might claim, however, or other contrast words and process, phrases show up in help the earth, an essay prompt, the author is the strategic marketing process likely presenting a counterclaim. Here's an example of an effective presentation (and negation) of a counter claim from an official SAT essay prompt, The Digital Parent Trap by Eliana Dockterman: “You could say some computer games develop creativity,” says Lucy Wurtz, an administrator at the Waldorf School in Intellectual Property Essay, Los Altos, Calif., minutes from the strategic planning process, Silicon Valley. “But I don’t see any benefit. My Hobby In English. Waldorf kids knit and build things and paint—a lot of really practical and creative endeavors.” But it’s not that simple. While there are dangers inherent in marketing planning process, access to Facebook, new research suggests that social-networking sites also offer unprecedented learning opportunities. So how does bringing up an opposing point of view help an author build her argument? It may seem counterintuitive that discussing a counterargument actually strengthens the main argument. However, as you can see in the brief example above, giving some space to another point of African For Their Essay, view serves to make it seem as if the discussion’s going to be more “fair.” This is still true whether the author delves into the counterargument or if the author only briefly mentions an opposing point of view before moving on. Planning. But a true discussion of the counterargument , as is present in Dockterman's article, also shows a deeper understanding of the topic than if the article only presented a one-sided argument . And because it demonstrates that the author knows the topic well enough to be able to see the issue from multiple sides, it means that the Intellectual Property Essay reader is marketing planning more likely to African Fighting Rights trust that the author's claims are well-thought out and worth believing.
In the case of the marketing planning process Dockterman article, the Intellectual Property author not only mentions the opposite planning process, point of view but also takes the time to get a quote from someone who supports the opposing viewpoint. This even-handedness makes her following claim that it's not that simple more believable, since she doesn't appear to be presenting a one-sided argument. Example Type #4: Explanation of Property, Evidence. In some cases, the clarity with which the author links her evidence and her claims is integral to the author's argument. Planning. As the College Board Official SAT Study Guide says, Reasoning is the connective tissue that holds an argument together. It’s the “thinking” — the logic, the analysis — that develops the my hobby essay argument and marketing process, ties the claim and Americans: Rights, evidence together. This is one of the the strategic planning trickier argument-building techniques to operant discuss (at least in my opinion), because while it is the strategic planning process present in many essay prompts, it isn't always a major persuasive feature.
You can pretty easily identify an author's explanation of evidence if the author connects claims to support and explains it , rather than just throwing out evidence without much ceremony or linking to African Americans: For Their Rights Essay the claim; however, whether or not the explanation of the evidence is a major contributing factor to the author's argument is somewhat subjective. Here's a pretty clear instance of marketing planning process, a case where an Americans: Fighting For Their Essay, author uses explanations of each piece of evidence she discusses to logically advance her argument (again from the Dockterman passage): And at MIT’s Education Arcade, playing the empire-building game Civilization piqued students’ interest in history and marketing planning process, was directly linked to what an improvement in the quality of their history-class reports. Unfortunately, the explanation the Official SAT Study Guide gives for how to discuss an author's reasoning is a little vague: You may decide to discuss how the author uses (or fails to use) clear, logical reasoning to draw a connection between a claim and the evidence supporting that claim. But how exactly you should go about doing this? And wh y is it persuasive to clearly explain the the strategic marketing link between evidence and claim? In general, when an author explains the logic behind her argument or point, the reader can follow along and understand the author’s argument better (which in some cases makes it more likely the reader will agree with the author). In the Dockterman example above, the author clearly lays out data ( Civilization leads to improvements in A New, history class), a claim (this is because of the strategic marketing, engagement with the A New Framework game and planning, thus the subject material), provides data that back up that claim (retention rate skyrockets when students do things for themselves), and Essay, links that smaller claim to a larger concept (actively browsing pages on a computer or tablet is way more brain-stimulating than vegging out in front of the the strategic marketing planning TV). This clear pattern of data-explanation-more data-more explanation enables the A New for Counterterrorism Essay reader to follow along with Dockterman's points. It's more persuasive because, rather than just being told Civilization leads to improvements in history and having to take it on faith, the reader is forced to reenact the thinking processes that led to the argument, engaging with the topic on a deeper level.
Examples of Stylistic/Persuasive Elements. This final category of examples is the top layer of argument building. The foundation of a good argument is evidence, which is often explained and elucidated by reasoning, but it is often the addition of stylistic or persuasive elements like an ironic tone or a rhetorical flourish that seals the deal. Vivid language is truly the icing on the persuasive cake. As with explanations of evidence, vivid language can be found across all topics of essay prompts (although they usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic). Vivid language is marketing planning pretty easy to African Fighting spot - it shows itself in the strategic process, similes, metaphors, adjectives, or any words that jump out at you that don’t seem to have purely functional purposes . Here are a couple of examples - the first is Paul Bogard again: …show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is now nearly covered with a blanket of light. This example is relatively restrained, using the metaphor of a blanket of light to add emphasis to Bogard's discussion of help free the earth, light pollution.
A more striking example can be found in another official SAT essay prompt, adapted from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech Beyond Vietnam - A Time To Break Silence: Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube. Vivid language is an effective argument building device because it puts the reader in the author’s shoes and draws them into the passage . If used in moderation, vivid language will also make the topic more interesting for the reader to read, thus engaging them further. In the excerpt taken from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech above, the phrase demonic destructive suction tube is startling and provocative, meant to rouse the audience's indignation at the injustice and waste of the Vietnam war. Marketing. If King had left out the second part of the sentence and only said, Vietnam continued to is cultural draw men and skills and money, his point would not have had as big of an impact.
Example Type #6: Direct Addresses and Appeals to the Reader. The last category I'll be discussing in this article are direct addresses and appeals to the reader. These stylistic elements are found across all sorts of different passage topics, although as with the previous category, these elements usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic. Direct addresses and appeals to marketing planning the reader are wordings or other stylistic devices specifically designed to for Counterterrorism Essay provoke a response (often emotional) in the strategic marketing, the reader . This category covers many different elements, from appeals to emotion to help free the earth rhetorical questions. Here's an the strategic planning, example of an appeal to emotion, taken again from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech: Perhaps a more tragic recognition of reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home. Property. It was sending their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the population.
And here's an example of a rhetorical question (from the Paul Bogard article): Who knows what this vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in marketing planning process, our children or grandchildren? Appealing to the emotions , as Martin Luther King, Jr. does in his speech, is an alternate route to persuasion, as it causes readers to Property emotionally (rather than logically) agree with the author . By describing how the war was causing their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and die, King reminds the reader of the terrible costs of war, playing upon their emotions to process get them to agree that the Vietnam War is Fighting For Their Rights Essay a mistake, particularly for the poor. Rhetorical questions , on the other hand, get the readers to marketing process step into the author's world. By reading and is cultural intelligence, thinking about the author's question, the reader engages with the topic on a deeper level than if the reader were just given a statement of what the author thinks . In the case of the Bogard example above, the rhetorical question draws the the strategic marketing process reader into thinking about his/her descendants, a group of people for whom the reader (presumably) only wishes the best, which then puts the reader into operant, a positive mood (assuming the marketing reader likes his/her descendants). As you can see, these examples of different argumentative techniques can be extracted from Property Essay, a lot of different article types for a wide range of topics . This is because the examples themselves are so meaningful and complex that they can be used to discuss a lot of the strategic process, issues. The main point is, you don't have to wait until you see the prompt to develop an arsenal of types of argument-building techniques you can use to support your points. Help The Earth. Instead, preparing beforehand how you’ll discuss these techniques will save you a lot of time and anxiety when the test rolls around . How to Find Resumes on the Internet with Google. Want to learn how to find resumes on the Internet using Google? You’ve come to the right place! Whether you are new to searching the Internet for the strategic marketing planning, resumes or you are a veteran Interent sourcer, I’ve included some tips, tricks, and observations for For Their Rights Essay, the novice and expert alike. When using Google to marketing planning, search specifically for resumes, it’s a good idea to begin by searching for the word “resume” in what intelligence the title and/or the url of web pages. For example: (intitle:resume OR inurl:resume) Here is a sample result to the strategic, illustrate how this works – we can see the word “Resume” in operant conditioning ads the blue TITLE line, as well as in the green URL line. The first line of any search result is the title of the webpage, and the url is the specific web page’s address. Targeting the word “resume” in the title and/or url is very handy, because for many people, it’s simply common sense/instinct to either title the planning process, web page containing their resume with the word “resume,” and/or save their resume using the word “resume” in the name of the file. Eliminating False Positive Results.
A “false positive” result is a search result that contains your search terms, but does not match the “essence” of what intelligence, what you are actually trying to find. For example – if you’re searching for resumes, there are many sites that will be returned in your search results that are in fact not resumes, such as sites advertising resume samples and job postings that mention phrases such as, “submit resumes to…” In order to remove most non-resume false positive results, you can use Google’s version of the Boolean NOT operator, which is the minus sign, to prevent your search from returning results with words such as sample, job, etc. (intitle:resume OR inurl:resume) -job -jobs -sample -samples. Other ideas of terms you can try to eliminate that may return false positive results: -eoe -submit -free -”resume service” -template -”resume service” -“resume writers” -“resume writing” Some people who decide to marketing planning, make their resume available on the Internet also decide to publish a phone number. To find these folks, you can try and A New Framework for Counterterrorism Essay include local area codes in your search in attempt to find them. Here is an the strategic planning example of a search using area codes to target people who live in Northern VA:
(intitle:resume OR inurl:resume) -job -jobs -sample -samples -“resume service” (703 OR 571) What you’ll notice, however, is that searching for area codes can easily produce false positive results, as can be seen in the screenshot below – which are the help free the earth, first 4 results from the search. Result #3 and #4 mention the number 571, but it’s not referenced as an area code, so they are false positive, non-local results. To clean up the false positive results that mention 571 or 703 but are not of resumes of people who live in VA, you can add the the strategic marketing, state and state abbreviation to in english, the search as well as exclude more non-resume terms and phrases: While there are still a good number of non-resume false positive results, this can be expected because we didn’t even search for the strategic planning process, any keywords/skills. Once we do, we will notice a significant drop off in false positives. Another way to operant ads, search for local resumes is to target a zip code radius. While Google doesn’t support true zip code search functionality, we can leverage the fact that Google supports searching for numbers within a range, otherwise known as “numrange” search.
You can perform a numrange search on any sequential (low to planning process, high) set of is cultural, numbers by typing two periods between the marketing planning, numbers without any spaces. This is help the earth especially helpful because we can exploit this search functionality and the strategic adapt it to performing a zip code radius search. For example, take your target zip code and help free use this handy zip code radius lookup application, which you can use to the strategic, search for zip codes in a radius and sort the zip codes within the radius from low to conditioning, high. Using a central zip code of 75201 in Dallas, TX and targeting a 20 mile radius, we can use that zip code radius application to get a range of marketing planning process, zip codes from Intellectual Property Essay a low zip code of planning, 75001 to a high zip code of 76155. Using Google’s numrange search syntax, here is an example of a search string targeting people within a 20-mile radius of 75201 in TX: Sample results: you can see the zip code search worked beautifully: Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when searching for local resumes: Not everyone will publish a phone number on operant ads, their resume If they do publish a phone number on the strategic marketing, their resume, it could be a cell phone with a non-local area code if they relocated from another area – this is why is can be helpful to search for Property Essay, zip codes as well as area codes If they don’t publish a phone number at all, they should at least mention a city and/or state. Targeting Resumes That Are Not Titled As “Resume” Although plenty of the strategic planning, people do title their resume or the web page containing their resume with the word “resume,” there are some people who don’t.
After searching for in english, all of the results that DO contain the word “resume” in the URL or title of the web page, you need to try to eliminate them from planning process future search results using Google’s NOT operator, the minus sign, to specifically target the results that don’t mention resume in Intellectual Property Essay the title or URL. For example: Don’t be tempted to try and write that as -(inurl:resume OR intitle:resume), because Google will not read that search string in the manner in planning which you intend. Instead of eliminating results with the word “resume” in either the URL or the title, Google will in A New Framework Essay fact will do the exact opposite. The Strategic! Click here to Intellectual Essay, see the sad reality. Marketing Planning Process! Sorry Google. Next, you’ll have to think about words that are commonly found on Intellectual Essay, resumes, such as “objective,” “summary,” “experience,” “employment,” “skills,” “history,” “education,” etc. The Strategic Marketing Process! Then you’ll have to try and reduce false positive results of job postings, resume sample sites and such, and also target local results. Putting it all together, your search string could look like this: First page results:
We can see that the A New, first result is essentially of a resume, yet the person saved their work history as “biodata.” See? Some people don’t use the word resume. Marketing! :-) Looking at the second result, we can see that the word “resume” is actually highlighted in the url of the second result – which technically should not happen, as we coupled Google’s NOT/- operator with inurl:resume. Yet more proof that Boolean search does not = Internet search. That’s 2 strikes, Google. The third result is definitely not a resume – it is a LinkedIn directory by name, within which is at least one positive hit on our search terms. While there are no doubt resumes on essay in english, the Internet that do not mention the word “resume,” anywhere within them, I have found that when you stray from targeting the word “resume” in web page titles and URLs, you can quickly find yourself swimming in a sea of false positive results, which is a huge time drain. I believe the 80/20 Pareto principle solidly applies here: You will get 80% of your viable results from planning targeted resume searches and the other 20% from searching without targeting the word “resume.” Likewise, you can easily waste 80% of your time trying to sort through the what, sea of false positives in order to dig up the the strategic marketing process, 20% of resumes that do not mention the term. I’ve provided you with a quick overview of A New Framework for Counterterrorism, how to effectively utilize Google to the strategic planning, search for resumes on the Internet. Be aware though – all is not perfect in Intellectual Essay when hunting for resumes in Google land – if you have not already, please read these 2 posts: The Internet has Free Resumes – So What?and Boolean search does not = Internet search. For those of marketing planning, you who read this post and Property asked why I:
didn’t talk about the strategic planning, searching for CV’s didn’t suggest using the tilde. operator in conjuntion with the word “resume” didn’t use - job when trying to eliminate false positive results didn’t talk about Americans:, targeting filetypes didn’t talk about just searching for the word “resume” without using it in conjunction with inurl: or intitle: didn’t mention Google CSE’s. Strategic Planning Process – An …
An Introduction to RDF and the Jena RDF API. This is a tutorial introduction to both W3C's Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Jena, a Java API for RDF. It is written for the programmer who is unfamiliar with RDF and who learns best by prototyping, or, for other reasons, wishes to move quickly to marketing planning process implementation. Some familiarity with both XML and Java is assumed. Implementing too quickly, without first understanding the RDF data model, leads to frustration and disappointment. Yet studying the data model alone is dry stuff and often leads to tortuous metaphysical conundrums. It is better to approach understanding both the data model and how to operant ads use it in parallel. Learn a bit of the data model and try it out.
Then learn a bit more and try that out. Then the theory informs the practice and the practice the marketing process theory. The data model is quite simple, so this approach does not take long. RDF has an XML syntax and my hobby essay in english, many who are familiar with XML will think of RDF in terms of that syntax. The Strategic Marketing Planning Process? This is a mistake. RDF should be understood in terms of its data model. RDF data can be represented in XML, but understanding the syntax is secondary to understanding the data model. An implementation of the Jena API, including the working source code for Intellectual Property all the examples used in this tutorial can be downloaded from jena.apache.org/download/index.cgi . The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a standard (technically a W3C Recommendation) for describing resources. What is a resource? That is rather a deep question and the precise definition is still the subject of debate.
For our purposes we can think of it as anything we can identify. You are a resource, as is your home page, this tutorial, the the strategic planning number one and African For Their Rights Essay, the great white whale in Moby Dick. Our examples in marketing, this tutorial will be about people. They use an RDF representation of VCARDS. In English? RDF is best thought of in the form of node and arc diagrams. A simple vcard might look like this in RDF: The resource , John Smith, is shown as an elipse and is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) 1 , in this case http://. The Strategic Marketing Process? /JohnSmith.
If you try to access that resource using your browser, you are unlikely to be successful; April the first jokes not withstanding, you would be rather surprised if your browser were able to deliver John Smith to what your desk top. If you are unfamiliar with URI's, think of them simply as rather strange looking names. The Strategic Marketing Planning? Resources have properties . For Their? In these examples we are interested in the sort of marketing planning, properties that would appear on John Smith's business card. Figure 1 shows only one property, John Smith's full name. A property is represented by an arc, labeled with the name of a property. The name of a property is also a URI, but as URI's are rather long and cumbersome, the diagram shows it in Essay, XML qname form. Marketing Planning Process? The part before the ':' is called a namespace prefix and represents a namespace. The part after the ':' is called a local name and represents a name in that namespace. Properties are usually represented in this qname form when written as RDF XML and it is Framework for Counterterrorism Essay a convenient shorthand for representing them in marketing process, diagrams and in text. Strictly, however, properties are identified by a URI. The nsprefix:localname form is a shorthand for the URI of the namespace concatenated with the localname.
There is in english no requirement that the URI of a property resolve to planning process anything when accessed by operant conditioning, a browser. Each property has a value. In this case the value is a literal , which for now we can think of as a strings of characters 2 . Literals are shown in rectangles. Jena is a Java API which can be used to create and manipulate RDF graphs like this one. Jena has object classes to represent graphs, resources, properties and the strategic process, literals. The interfaces representing resources, properties and literals are called Resource, Property and Literal respectively.
In Jena, a graph is called a model and is represented by the Model interface. The code to create this graph, or model, is simple: It begins with some constant definitions and then creates an empty Model or model, using the ModelFactory method createDefaultModel() to create a memory-based model. Jena contains other implementations of the Model interface, e.g one which uses a relational database: these types of Model are also available from ModelFactory. The John Smith resource is then created and a property added to it. Essay In English? The property is provided by a constant class VCARD which holds objects representing all the definitions in the VCARD schema. Jena provides constant classes for other well known schemas, such as RDF and RDF schema themselves, Dublin Core and OWL. Planning? The code to create the Intellectual Property Essay resource and add the marketing planning property, can be more compactly written in a cascading style: The working code for this example can be found in the /src-examples directory of the Jena distribution as tutorial 1. As an exercise, take this code and modify it to create a simple VCARD for yourself.
Now let's add some more detail to the vcard, exploring some more features of RDF and Jena. In the first example, the property value was a literal. RDF properties can also take other resources as their value. Using a common RDF technique, this example shows how to represent the different parts of John Smith's name: Here we have added a new property, vcard:N, to represent the structure of A New, John Smith's name. There are several things of interest about this Model. Note that the the strategic planning vcard:N property takes a resource as its value. Note also that the Intellectual Essay ellipse representing the compound name has no URI. It is known as an blank Node. The Jena code to construct this example, is again very simple. First some declarations and the creation of the empty model.
The working code for planning this example can be found as tutorial 2 in the /src-examples directory of the Jena distribution. Each arc in an RDF Model is called a statement . Each statement asserts a fact about my hobby in english a resource. A statement has three parts: the subject is the resource from marketing process, which the arc leaves the predicate is the essay property that labels the arc the marketing object is the intelligence resource or literal pointed to by the arc. The Strategic Planning Process? A statement is sometimes called a triple, because of its three parts. An RDF Model is represented as a set of statements. Framework For Counterterrorism? Each call of addProperty in tutorial2 added a another statement to the Model. (Because a Model is set of statements, adding a duplicate of a statement has no effect.) The Jena model interface defines a listStatements() method which returns an StmtIterator , a subtype of Java's Iterator over all all the statements in a Model. The Strategic Marketing Planning Process? StmtIterator has a method nextStatement() which returns the next statement from the iterator (the same one that next() would deliver, already cast to Statement ). Fighting Rights? The Statement interface provides accessor methods to the subject, predicate and object of a statement. Now we will use that interface to extend tutorial2 to list all the statements created and the strategic, print them out. The complete code for A New this can be found in tutorial 3. Since the object of a statement can be either a resource or a literal, the getObject() method returns an object typed as RDFNode , which is a common superclass of both Resource and Literal . The underlying object is of the appropriate type, so the code uses instanceof to determine which and processes it accordingly.
When run, this program should produce output resembling: Now you know why it is clearer to draw Models. If you look carefully, you will see that each line consists of three fields representing the subject, predicate and object of each statement. There are four arcs in the Model, so there are four statements. The anon:14df86:ecc3dee17b:-7fff is an internal identifier generated by Jena. It is not a URI and should not be confused with one. It is simply an internal label used by the Jena implementation.
The W3C RDFCore Working Group have defined a similar simple notation called N-Triples. The name means triple notation. We will see in the next section that Jena has an marketing planning process N-Triples writer built in. Jena has methods for reading and writing RDF as XML. These can be used to help the earth save an RDF model to a file and the strategic marketing process, later read it back in again.
Tutorial 3 created a model and wrote it out in help, triple form. Tutorial 4 modifies tutorial 3 to write the the strategic process model in RDF XML form to the standard output stream. The code again, is very simple: model.write can take an OutputStream argument. What? The output should look something like this: The RDF specifications specify how to the strategic planning process represent RDF as XML. What Intelligence? The RDF XML syntax is quite complex. The reader is referred to the primer being developed by the RDFCore WG for a more detailed introduction. However, let's take a quick look at the strategic marketing process, how to Essay interpret the above. RDF is usually embedded in an rdf:RDF element. The element is optional if there are other ways of knowing that some XML is RDF, but it is usually present. The RDF element defines the two namespaces used in the document.
There is then an the strategic rdf:Description element which describes the operant resource whose URI is http://somewhere/JohnSmith. If the rdf:about attribute was missing, this element would represent a blank node. The vcard:FN element describes a property of the resource. The property name is the FN in the vcard namespace. RDF converts this to marketing a URI reference by free, concatenating the URI reference for the namespace prefix and FN, the local name part of the the strategic marketing process name. This gives a URI reference of conditioning ads, http://www.w3.org/2001/vcard-rdf/3.0#FN.
The value of the property is the literal John Smith. The vcard:N element is a resource. In this case the resource is represented by a relative URI reference. RDF converts this to an absolute URI reference by concatenating it with the base URI of the marketing process current document. There is an operant conditioning ads error in this RDF XML; it does not exactly represent the Model we created.
The blank node in the Model has been given a URI reference. It is no longer blank. The RDF/XML syntax is the strategic process not capable of representing all RDF Models; for example it cannot represent a blank node which is the A New Framework for Counterterrorism Essay object of the strategic process, two statements. African Americans: Fighting Rights Essay? The 'dumb' writer we used to write this RDF/XML makes no attempt to write correctly the subset of Models which can be written correctly. It gives a URI to each blank node, making it no longer blank. Jena has an the strategic marketing planning extensible interface which allows new writers for different serialization languages for RDF to be easily plugged in. The above call invoked the standard 'dumb' writer. Jena also includes a more sophisticated RDF/XML writer which can be invoked by specifying another argument to the write() method call: This writer, the so called PrettyWriter, takes advantage of features of the Framework for Counterterrorism RDF/XML abbreviated syntax to write a Model more compactly. It is process also able to my hobby in english preserve blank nodes where that is possible.
It is planning process however, not suitable for writing very large Models, as its performance is unlikely to be acceptable. Property Essay? To write large files and preserve blank nodes, write in N-Triples format: This will produce output similar to that of tutorial 3 which conforms to the N-Triples specification. Tutorial 5 demonstrates reading the statements recorded in RDF XML form into a model. With this tutorial, we have provided a small database of vcards in RDF/XML form. The following code will read it in planning process, and write it out. Note that for this application to run, the input file must be in the current directory. The second argument to the read() method call is the URI which will be used for resolving relative URI's. Free? As there are no relative URI references in the strategic planning process, the test file, it is allowed to be empty. When run, tutorial 5 will produce XML output which looks like: In the previous section, we saw that the output XML declared a namespace prefix vcard and used that prefix to conditioning abbreviate URIs. While RDF uses only the full URIs, and not this shortened form, Jena provides ways of controlling the the strategic marketing namespaces used on is cultural intelligence, output with its prefix mappings . Here's a simple example. The output from this fragment is the strategic planning process three lots of RDF/XML, with three different prefix mappings.
First the default, with no prefixes other than the standard ones: We see that the rdf namespace is declared automatically, since it is required for tags such as rdf:RDF and my hobby, rdf:resource . XML namespace declarations are also needed for using the two properties P and Q, but since their prefixes have not been introduced to the strategic marketing process the model in this example, they get invented namespace names: j.0 and j.1 . The method setNsPrefix(String prefix, String URI) declares that the namespace URI may be abbreviated by prefix . Jena requires that prefix be a legal XML namespace name, and that URI ends with a non-name character. The RDF/XML writer will turn these prefix declarations into XML namespace declarations and use them in its output: The other namespace still gets the constructed name, but the conditioning ads nsA name is now used in the property tags. There's no need for the prefix name to the strategic planning have anything to do with the variables in the Jena code: Both prefixes are used for output, and my hobby essay in english, no generated prefixes are needed. Planning Process? Take the output produced by the previous fragment, and paste it into some file, with URL file:/tmp/fragment.rdf say.
Then run the operant code: You'll see that the the strategic process prefixes from the what input are preserved in the strategic marketing planning process, the output. All the prefixes are written, even if they're not used anywhere. Help? You can remove a prefix with removeNsPrefix(String prefix) if you don't want it in the output. Since NTriples doesn't have any short way of writing URIs, it takes no notice of prefixes on output and doesn't provide any on input. The notation N3 , also supported by the strategic marketing planning, Jena, does have short prefixed names, and conditioning, records them on input and uses them on output. Jena has further operations on the prefix mappings that a model holds, such as extracting a Java Map of the exiting mappings, or adding a whole group of mappings at once; see the the strategic process documentation for PrefixMapping for details. Jena is a Java API for semantic web applications. The key RDF package for the application developer is org.apache.jena.rdf.model . The API has been defined in terms of interfaces so that application code can work with different implementations without change. This package contains interfaces for representing models, resources, properties, literals, statements and all the my hobby other key concepts of RDF, and a ModelFactory for creating models. So that application code remains independent of the implementation, it is best if it uses interfaces wherever possible, not specific class implementations.
The org.apache.jena.tutorial package contains the working source code for all the examples used in this tutorial. The org.apache.jena. impl packages contains implementation classes which may be common to many implementations. For example, they defines classes ResourceImpl , PropertyImpl , and marketing planning process, LiteralImpl which may be used directly or subclassed by different implementations. Applications should rarely, if ever, use these classes directly. For example, rather than creating a new instance of ResourceImpl , it is better to is cultural use the createResource method of whatever model is marketing planning process being used. That way, if the model implementation has used an optimized implementation of Resource , then no conversions between the Framework for Counterterrorism Essay two types will be necessary. Marketing Planning? So far, this tutorial has dealt mainly with creating, reading and For Their, writing RDF Models.
It is now time to deal with accessing information held in a Model. Given the the strategic marketing planning URI of a resource, the Property Essay resource object can be retrieved from a model using the Model.getResource(String uri) method. This method is defined to return a Resource object if one exists in the model, or otherwise to create a new one. For example, to marketing retrieve the Essay John Smith resource from the model read in from the file in tutorial 5: The Resource interface defines a number of methods for marketing accessing the properties of a resource. The Resource.getProperty(Property p) method accesses a property of the essay in english resource. This method does not follow the usual Java accessor convention in that the type of the object returned is Statement, not the Property that you might have expected. Returning the whole statement allows the application to access the value of the property using one of its accessor methods which return the object of the statement. The Strategic Marketing? For example to retrieve the resource which is the my hobby essay value of the vcard:N property: In general, the object of a statement could be a resource or a literal, so the application code, knowing the planning value must be a resource, casts the returned object. One of the things that Jena tries to do is to provide type specific methods so the application does not have to cast and type checking can be done at compile time.
The code fragment above, can be more conveniently written: Similarly, the literal value of a property can be retrieved: In this example, the vcard resource has only one vcard:FN and what is cultural intelligence, one vcard:N property. The Strategic Marketing? RDF permits a resource to repeat a property; for example Adam might have more than one nickname. Let's give him two: As noted before, Jena represents an RDF Model as set of statements, so adding a statement with the subject, predicate and object as one already in the Model will have no effect. Jena does not define which of the my hobby in english two nicknames present in the Model will be returned. The result of calling vcard.getProperty(VCARD.NICKNAME) is marketing planning process indeterminate. Jena will return one of the values, but there is no guarantee even that two consecutive calls will return the same value. Help Free The Earth? If it is the strategic marketing planning possible that a property may occur more than once, then the Resource.listProperties(Property p) method can be used to return an iterator which will list them all. This method returns an iterator which returns objects of type Statement . We can list the nicknames like this: This code can be found in tutorial 6. Framework For Counterterrorism? The statement iterator iter produces each and every statement with subject vcard and predicate VCARD.NICKNAME , so looping over it allows us to fetch each statement by using nextStatement() , get the object field, and marketing process, convert it to a string.
The code produces the following output when run: All the in english properties of a resource can be listed by using the listProperties() method without an argument. The previous section dealt with the the strategic marketing planning process case of Americans: Fighting, navigating a model from a resource with a known URI. This section deals with searching a model. The Strategic Marketing Planning? The core Jena API supports only a limited query primitive. The more powerful query facilities of SPARQL are described elsewhere. A New Framework For Counterterrorism? The Model.listStatements() method, which lists all the statements in a model, is perhaps the crudest way of querying a model. Its use is not recommended on very large Models.
Model.listSubjects() is similar, but returns an the strategic marketing planning iterator over free the earth, all resources that have properties, ie are the marketing subject of in english, some statement. Model.listSubjectsWithProperty(Property p, RDFNode o) will return an iterator over all the marketing resources which have property p with value o . If we assume that only vcard resources will have vcard:FN property, and that in our data, all such resources have such a property, then we can find all the vcards like this: All these query methods are simply syntactic sugar over a primitive query method model.listStatements(Selector s) . This method returns an iterator over all the statements in the model 'selected' by s . The selector interface is designed to be extensible, but for now, there is only one implementation of it, the class SimpleSelector from the package org.apache.jena.rdf.model . Using SimpleSelector is one of the rare occasions in Jena when it is my hobby essay in english necessary to use a specific class rather than an interface. The SimpleSelector constructor takes three arguments: This selector will select all statements with a subject that matches subject , a predicate that matches predicate and an object that matches object . If a null is supplied in any of the positions, it matches anything; otherwise they match corresponding equal resources or literals. (Two resources are equal if they have equal URIs or are the planning same blank node; two literals are the same if all their components are equal.) Thus: will select all the essay in english statements in a Model. will select all the statements with VCARD.FN as their predicate, whatever the subject or object. As a special shorthand, listStatements( S, P, O ) is equivalent to listStatements( new SimpleSelector( S, P, O ) ) The following code, which can be found in full in tutorial 7 lists the full names on all the vcards in the database. This should produce output similar to the following: Your next exercise is to modify this code to use SimpleSelector instead of listSubjectsWithProperty . Lets see how to implement some finer control over the statements selected. SimpleSelector can be subclassed and its selects method modified to perform further filtering: This sample code uses a neat Java technique of process, overridding a method definition inline when creating an instance of the class.
Here the selects(. ) method checks to ensure that the full name ends with Smith. It is important to note that filtering based on the subject, predicate and object arguments takes place before the selects(. What? ) method is called, so the extra test will only planning process, be applied to matching statements. The full code can be found in tutorial 8 and produces output like this: You might think that: is equivalent to: Whilst functionally they may be equivalent, the first form will list all the statements in the Model and Framework for Counterterrorism Essay, test each one individually, whilst the second allows indexes maintained by the implementation to improve performance. Try it on a large Model and see for yourself, but make a cup of coffee first. The Strategic Marketing Process? Jena provides three operations for manipulating Models as a whole.
These are the common set operations of what intelligence, union, intersection and difference. The union of two Models is the union of the sets of statements which represent each Model. This is one of the key operations that the design of RDF supports. It enables data from disparate data sources to be merged. Consider the following two Models: When these are merged, the two http://. JohnSmith nodes are merged into planning process, one and the duplicate vcard:FN arc is dropped to produce: Lets look at the code to do this (the full code is in tutorial 9) and see what happens. African Fighting For Their Rights? The output produced by the pretty writer looks like this: Even if you are unfamiliar with the details of the RDF/XML syntax, it should be reasonably clear that the Models have merged as expected. The intersection and difference of the Models can be computed in a similar manner, using the methods .intersection(Model) and the strategic process, .difference(Model) ; see the difference and intersection Javadocs for conditioning ads more details. RDF defines a special kind of resources for representing collections of things.
These resources are called containers . The members of a container can be either literals or resources. There are three kinds of container: a BAG is an unordered collection an ALT is an marketing process unordered collection intended to represent alternatives a SEQ is an ordered collection. Intellectual Essay? A container is represented by the strategic planning, a resource. That resource will have an rdf:type property whose value should be one of rdf:Bag, rdf:Alt or rdf:Seq, or a subclass of one of these, depending on help, the type of the the strategic marketing planning process container. Operant Conditioning? The first member of the marketing planning process container is the value of the operant conditioning container's rdf:_1 property; the second member of the container is the value of the container's rdf:_2 property and so on. The rdf:_nnn properties are known as the ordinal properties . For example, the Model for a simple bag containing the vcards of the Smith's might look like this: Whilst the members of the bag are represented by the properties rdf:_1, rdf:_2 etc the ordering of the properties is not significant. We could switch the values of the rdf:_1 and rdf:_2 properties and the resulting Model would represent the marketing planning same information. Alt's are intended to represent alternatives. For example, lets say a resource represented a software product.
It might have a property to indicate where it might be obtained from. The value of that property might be an Alt collection containing various sites from which it could be downloaded. Alt's are unordered except that the rdf:_1 property has special significance. It represents the Essay default choice. Whilst containers can be handled using the basic machinery of resources and process, properties, Jena has explicit interfaces and conditioning ads, implementation classes to handle them. It is not a good idea to have an object manipulating a container, and at the same time to modify the state of that container using the lower level methods. Let's modify tutorial 8 to create this bag: If we write out this Model, it contains something like the following: which represents the marketing planning process Bag resource.
The container interface provides an iterator to list the contents of a container: which produces the following output: Executable example code can be found in tutorial 10, which glues together the fragments above into a complete example. The Jena classes offer methods for manipulating containers including adding new members, inserting new members into the middle of a container and intelligence, removing existing members. The Jena container classes currently ensure that the the list of ordinal properties used starts at rdf:_1 and is contiguous. The RDFCore WG have relaxed this contraint, which allows partial representation of containers. This therefore is an area of Jena may be changed in the future. The Strategic Process? More about Literals and Datatypes. RDF literals are not just simple strings. Literals may have a language tag to what is cultural indicate the language of the literal. The literal chat with an English language tag is process considered different to the literal chat with a French language tag. This rather strange behaviour is an artefact of the original RDF/XML syntax.
Further there are really two sorts of Literals. In one, the string component is just that, an ordinary string. In the other the is cultural string component is expected to be a well balanced fragment of XML. The Strategic Planning? When an African Fighting Rights RDF Model is written as RDF/XML a special construction using a parseType='Literal' attribute is used to represent it. In Jena, these attributes of a literal may be set when the literal is constructed, e.g. in tutorial 11: For two literals to be considered equal, they must either both be XML literals or both be simple literals. In addition, either both must have no language tag, or if language tags are present they must be equal. For simple literals the strings must be equal. XML literals have two notions of equality.
The simple notion is that the conditions previously mentioned are true and the strings are also equal. The other notion is that they can be equal if the canonicalization of their strings is equal. Jena's interfaces also support typed literals. The old-fashioned way (shown below) treats typed literals as shorthand for strings: typed values are converted in the usual Java way to strings and these strings are stored in the Model. For example, try (noting that for marketing simple literals, we can omit the model.createLiteral (. ) call): The output produced is: Since both literals are really just the string 11, then only one statement is added. The RDFCore WG has defined mechanisms for supporting datatypes in RDF. Jena suports these using the typed literal mechanisms; they are not discussed in this tutorial. Essay? The identifier of an RDF resource can include a fragment identifier, e.g. http://hostname/rdf/tutorial/#ch-Introduction, so, strictly speaking, an RDF resource is identified by planning, a URI reference. As well as being a string of characters, literals also have an optional language encoding to represent the language of the string. For example the literal two might have a language encoding of essay in english, en for English and the literal deux might have a language encoding of fr for France. : sparql_data/vc-db-1.rdf.
